They should have quit then....  very disappointing.... especially if rooting for Fontbonne the underdog....

I was disappointed, but they did cover spread, so to speak, and played only three upperclassmen--one sophomore and two juniors--who averaged about 20 minutes.  I think I am slowly becoming a Fontbonne fan.

After last night's game, I'm tempted to move Fontbonne down to the level of Prin and BC in the hopefan standings, but they played Westmin close in the first half, so I'll refrain...
hopefan standings updated...

Standings based on 3 principles..
Teams that are contenders should not lose at Home  if they do, it is a -1
Teams that are contenders would hope to beat other contenders on the road... if they do, it is a +1
Teams that are contenders should never lose to Blackburn or Prin... if they do, it's a -1
When contenders win at home, lose on the road, or beat PRin and BC anywhere, it's = 0
Do what you are supposed to, you'll finish 10-6, with no guarantees... it's the teams that win that 1 extra game on the road, and defend home, that will finish ahead.....

Hopefan standings based on above
Webster +1   (won at Greenville)
Mac +1  (won at Eureka)
Westmin  +1  (won at Fontbonne)
Spalding 0
Fontbonne -1 (lost at home vs Westminster)
Greenville  -1 (lost at home vs Webster)
Eureka  -1  (lost at home vs Mac)

Just catching up on my SLIAC reading after 19 house guests in 14 days, not all at the same time, thank God, and all of them family, and note that Hopefan has me living in Florida (12/22 post). Just to set the record straight, I live in Georgia, a little south and east of Savannah.

It's still nice and warm, most of the time, but the house guests have kept me off the golf courses for the past two weeks. Back at it again on Monday. Years ago I was a pretty good golfer but didn't have the time or money to play a lot; now I have plenty of each and I'm terrible.

I'll be in STL for my annual hoops visit (SLIAC, UMSL, and Wash U) January 31-February 3 and plan on catching the Webster-Greenville games on February 2. Maybe I'll see some of you then. I'll be the one who is over-dressed for the occasion.

Hopefully there will be a better crew running the scorers' table than what was used for the Wash-U game Wednesday.

The game had to be stopped at least five times because the scorebook didn't match what was on the scoreboard.  One person was more intent on focusing on his popcorn than following the bouncing ball of the game.

The Wash-U roster that the group was working with was at least two years old, featuring the long-departed (but now never forgotten) Brett Sapp and Gipson Lyles.

On the floor, a Mac player was in the act of shooting the first free throw of two, when the substitution horn went off.  Graciously, the officials allowed the player to repeat that first free throw.

And, when Nick Burt of Wash-U fouled out, there was no horn or efforts made to motion Burt off the floor.  Burt waited for a couple of minutes, then went to line up on the near side of the lane to contest the upcoming Mac free-throw.  Finally, when it was apparent that Burt was inadvertently going to be allowed to play with 5 fouls, the Wash-U contingent at the table told the Mac coaching staff that Burt was still out there with five fouls.  The uproar from that bench was loud enough to wake the dead, and Burt finally was told that his afternoon was over.

Hopefully, a crew more familiar with the administration of an NCAA game will be manning the table tomorrow.

I hope the SLIAC commissioner has read this. I'm sure he wants to do everything possible for conference schools to perform these in-game management tasks effectively.

As for the Wash U roster issue, whose responsibility is it to see that the home school has the visiting team's current roster?

Mac has been known to have some problems... let's hope Wednesday's were a result of regular assistants not being back on campus yet, and the staff grabbing anyone available.  However Jaybird, I could equally critique the poor quality of Wash U's well advertised audio net cast.. not only was it delayed by a half hour, but the constant on off pauses made it impossible to listen to....I gave up after 5 minutes.....

Another SLIAC school that does a poor job at the scorer's table is Webster.. surprising as most all else at Webster is first class.. but the shot clock errors stopping games is a consistent problem there.....

I find the quality of Wash U's internet broadcasts from their own campus to generally be about as good as any I watch online, so I wonder if Wednesday's problems might be the result of trying to broadcast from Jacksonville. Not being very technologically knowledgeable, I'm just speculating about that.

jaybird44

We were in a technological dead zone.  Our signal to Stretch Internet was spotty at best, when we set up shop about 45 minutes before the broadcast.  SID Chris Mitchell tried to send a simple file to his assistant in St. Louis, and what usually takes a few seconds took several minutes to complete the transaction.  Doing Live Stats online was out of the question, upon seeing what we were up against, but the signal seemed to hold just strong enough with Stretch to give the broadcast the old college try.  So, we did...and we had plenty of folks text and e-mail Chris about our technical difficulties--which we mentioned at the top of the broadcast.

We have never had those kinds of problems with our webcasts, video or audio-only.  Not even close.  If we had known "a priori" the difficulties we would encounter, we wouldn't have bothered going through with it.  But, since our fans wouldn't have access to the local radio broadcast, we thought we would take the show on the road.  We had no idea that we would be figuratively going back in time to the dial-up days of the Internet.

Regarding the roster situation, Chris Mitchell is one of the best SIDs in the business, at any level of the NCAA.  He says he sent a current roster, and I would bet my house on that...especially since we're in the middle of the season, and he has been in the regular regimen of sending rosters to schools.

Look, I'm not trying to pick on MacMurray...I understand that it's hard to find personnel to man all of the positions needed to conduct a basketball game.  We go through the same thing during the holiday semester break.  I don't know if there wasn't enough time to train the folks at the table before the Mac/Wash-U game, or if there was a relative indifference toward the administration of that game.  But, after a few days of sitting on this, I thought it was necessary to recount them so they don't happen in a game later in the season that has a lot more riding on it--like a spot in the conference tournament.

Pat Coleman

Plus rosters are not hard to find with a simple browse of a team's website. I would bet most SIDs don't request rosters from each other these days since they are front and center on everyone's websites.

I'm certainly not trying to be critical of anyone, either. And I appreciate the explanatory responses and comments. I'm 100% confident that the SLIAC commissioner wants all member institutions to adhere to the highest possible standards when it comes to matters such as this and that he will do anything he can too see that those institutions have the necessary preparation to perform up to those standards.

ok... weekend report...  I know everyone is waiting breathlessly...

Attendance report....word on the street, or perhaps behind closed doors....
Dietrich Sooter of Webster and Dan Anderson of Greenville not playing due to Medical problems ... hopefully both will be able to return to the court soon, but obviously neither have just a common cold... I'm rootin for you guys... Also noticed Chuck Misuraca got minutes for Eureka (he'd missed 5 games)..  Larry Patterson of Prin (4th leading scorer in the SLIAC) and Aaron Griffin of Webster (leading Rebounder in the SLIAC) apparently will not be returning...

Spalding at Westmin... ok I take back all the negative connotations about DeWhon McAfee... yesterday at Westmin he was fantastic.. he has great ball fakes, head fakes, sneaky quick, perfect shooting form.. he literally could get a shot any time he wants, and it would be a good shot.. thing is though, he has to be 'hitting'.. and yesterday he was...  the second man among boys was Jametrius Brasher.. while there appears to be a Spalding dog house, and 'Jam' is chained in it, Brasher dominated the inside game when he was on the court... trouble is, for whatever reason, Brasher didn't start, and had his minutes reduced getting yanked several times for seemingly minor infractions.. On the other hand, Spalding has incredible depth, and great quicks.. they dominated the boards against Westmin, and appeared far quicker than the Jays...and this was with one of Spalding's better players sitting on the bench in street clothes (St Julian).
Also noted Cody Cutsinger (minus that long hair doo of prior years) is back and contributed 3 threes when he wasn't getting the ball to McAfee.   McAfee finishes with 30, Brasher with 15 on 7 of 10 shooting.   Don't let me downplay Westmin's comeback effort... down big from the get go, as much as 19, and still down 12 with 4 and a half to go, Skylar Tolson and Joe James led a frantic comeback that cut the lead to 4 several times.. but it was too little too late.... and Taylor Allen, just tremendous effort on the boards...

elsewhere...  BC wins the battle of winless over Prin.. Prin dresses only 6... Kenny Sydness did all he could in the last six minutes bring Prin within one, but Prin couldn't catch BC.. Prin had every chance to win this one, but shot poorly throughout 30% from the field including 2 of 22 from 3's, and 14 of 28 from the line.

Webster loses up at Eureka despite 27 points off the bench from Ahmad Smith and 15 points from Danny Zehner.. Jarrod Huskey gets all the minutes in the middle and goes 5 for 5 from the field and 8 boards...  But Eureka big men Dustin Fritch and Mark Lessen score 22 and 16 respectively to lead Eureka to a critical win...

As expected, Mac dominates Greenville... Brady Slagel and Clayton Whitlock control the inside game and Luke Bishop regains his shooting touch going for 22...  Greenville still looking for the right combo of guys on the floor.....
