REMINDER....   Summer League Basketball at 6:30   TONIGHT at Webster.... thanks Polar Pop for letting us know and I verified with a call to Webster just to make sure....    unfortunately I may not be able to make it... we'll see...

Noticed big man Matt Murphy from Jerseyville/McKendree playing with Westminster last night.  Does anybody know if he has transferred there?  Or maybe he was just filling in because they were short on numbers?

Not coming to Westmin... he was a HS teammate of one of the Westmin players......

When is next session? I didn't make it last night... it was felt I should be hanging new curtains.... :-\ :-\

Hopefan - Your not missing anything. My understanding is FU isn't having any incoming players playing this summer. My experience is Summer League is some of the Worst Basketball I've ever endured. Richie D, Sumner Ahearn, Darius Rucker, Welch are the only players that saw time last year. And, Sumner and Welch went Bombs away last nite and beat somebody.  :) ??? ;D Coach Bunch is keeping his herd pretty close to the vest, also. You have to this time of the year. Summer League is great for gym rats with no other basketball going on. Also, Congrats to Coach Albrecht on his retirement from SLCC.

Yes, it's pretty bad this summer.  Alot of lazy 2-3 zone and doesn't appear anyone is bringing their horses.  Games start tomorrow night at 6:30

See 17.3 (pages 137-138) for "Playing Seasons" information for basketball.

Thanks TQ. That seems to make it fairly clear that any games, scrimmages, joint practices with competition, etc. from November 15th to the conclusion of the season get counted toward the allowable 25 "contests" in a season. Two others are allowed from either the first allowable day of practice, or Nov. 1st (depending on the nature of the opponent) and before the first permissible contest date. There is one section that concludes with some confusing wording, but it's too complicated to try to sort out.

Based on Denny's and Polar Pop's statements, I think I'll take a bye on the summer action

In reviewing the material sent by TQ, I agree with YJack's assessment... but wow, the wording is sure confusing.... makes me wonder what Spalding was up to two years ago when they told me 2 of the games (in season) were exhibitions...?   It could be they realized they had a problem and corrected it, as they did not play in the Marietta tournament that I mentioned in my email to coach Gray.. they finished with 25 games rather than the original 27, and two were against D1 teams, Chatanooga, and Coastal Carolina....

Hopefan, yJak - what's your over/under on WU non conf wins? Just based on who is returning. Vegas has the number at 4?

With or Without Griffin?

I'm thinking he is part of the returning. I have heard that from 2 very reliable sources.

No clue. I don't like to make predictions.

With Griffin, Gotta go with over against a mediocre nonconference schedule... but I also have to assume they add some depth... they can't go with just 6 or 7 guys....

Assuming Edwards, Husky, Smith, Zehner and Griffin, plus Walton I count 6 reliable players. There will need to be new guys who can contribute right away to add some depth.

Denny McKinney

That's an experienced starting five. Add one shooter and a big body that can give you 8 mins. Let's go.

Coach Bunch has to figure out how to productively keep Huskey and Griffin on the floor at the same time.... and yes, they do have to find an outside shooter... Smith and Zehner are both much better going to the basket...

Two questions: (1) How far from the basket do you have to be for a shot to be considered an "outside" shot?, and (2) What is the minimum "respectable" shooting percentage (a) from 3 point range, and (b) from inside 3 point range but still within the definition of an outside shot?

I guess that's really three questions.

My comments were thinking along the lines of guys who are primarily 'zonebreaker', shoot from a spot kind of guys... on a penetrate and dish, they are getting dished to....  the three point shooters or long 2 point shot shooters.....  I would not feel particularly comfortable with any of Webster's current players filling that role, because I think all of them are better getting the ball on the move and shooting 15 feet or going to the basket...    Skylar Tolson is an obvious example of what I think of as a perimeter shooter.. he rarely seemed to be cutting through the middle to get a shot... instead James or Lee or Prophet would be penetrating drawing the defense with an opportunity to get Tolson the ball on the perimeter...  SLIAC top 10 last year ranged from 46.3% to 36.6% and looking at the last several years, this was similar to prior years.  Ahmad Smith was number 10 at 36.6%, Danny Zehner finished at 35.5%.... I just wouldn't want to see either of these guys hanging on the perimeter....
Just noticed Luke Bishop, another obvious perimeter shooter... 39.1%...   Alan Aboona was in the 39% range too

What's good, what's bad... that's splitting hairs... I'm thinking more of the type of game that I feel suits particular individuals....   funny I would think 50% from the field is pretty good, but you'd only have to shoot 33>% from 3's to match the point output (not including free throw opportunities which obviously increase as you get closer to the hoop).
