y jack  agree, whomever is doing those writeups needs a thesaurus to mix it up a little.

hope not sure why the JC route either.  Had some success back in 99-02 bringing in Drew Marana, Lucas Smith, and later Zech Mclaren, but even then those guys were in state pickups from Danville and Spoon River.   Where the west coast connections come in I do not know, football team has had some success bringing guys from those areas as well.

As with everything, time will tell.

GC P01 those names bring back memories. Hopefan, are you anti JC period, or just for GC? Wasn't GC's leading scorer last year. JC's give you immediate experience at a higher level. These players all seem to come from winning programs. Webster had their Hawaiian players and the Texas connection. Fontbonne has it's Nevada group. I don't see where the distance would be that big of a deal. I would expect the youngmen had already considered that. Plus, they are a couple years older.

I'm just wondering why the issue with JC's.

Webster catches Great scheduling Break: St. Joe's Calumet (?????)
@ Home Rust (10-14)
@ Home Dominican (10-17)
@ Home Elmhurst (6-19)
@ Home Monmouth (7-16)

Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) went 4-20 last season.

Quote from: GC Panther 01 on June 24, 2013, 10:15:50 AMOn top of those things Coach Barber is very well connected in the hoops world and always managed  to put toghther a good trip during the season.  As a Jr we went to play in Chicago one day, practice at the Berto Center in Chicago the next morning

Dunno if there really is a Berto Center in Chicago -- if there is, I haven't heard of it -- but the Berto Center that the Bulls have used as their practice facility for the past two decades (and which the team is now selling, as it plans to move to a new practice facility next to the United Center), is in the tony suburb of Deerfield, fifteen miles north and a world removed from Chicago.

GC's leading scorer was Alex Mumphard... he's not a transfer.... GC brought in 6 transfers, but only one, Dan Anderson, contributed on the varsity for the whole season... 4 others were mysteriously demoted to the JV even though each had made some positive contributions in the box score... from that, I can only surmise that these individuals were not adhering to the type of discipline expected at Greenville... whether it was discipline on the court, or in the classroom, or elsewhere..... the 6th transfer played only minimum minutes the whole season....  And this team only beat Prin and BC in conference.....

Coach Barber tried it, and it didn't work... I'd hate to see this kind of unrest again this season....

For those more than 100 miles away, or not familiar with Chicago, Deerfield IS in Chicago.

(I sometimes get the same thing with Ypsi and Detroit. :P)

OK, then, let me put it into terms that SLIACers will grasp:

Deerfield : Chicago :: Ballwin : St. Louis

I don't think there is a Berto Center currently... but there WILL be. The Bulls new facility near the UC will retain the name (at least that's what I think I read).

I wonder if it was the Solheim Center...?  I've heard of NBA players working out there before.

Yeah, GCPanther01 might've been thinking of the Solheim Center, which is Moody Bible Institute's practice and performance gym and which, as you noted, has hosted NBA visiting-team workouts and pre-draft camps. The Solheim Center is located in the heart of Chicago, in the same Near North Side neighborhood as the rest of the MBI campus. But I doubt that the Solheim Center is considered a destination for even the most avid sports-fan visitor to the city, while the (now-defunct) gym up in Deerfield where Jordan and Pippen and Grant and Rodman used to practice definitely was a tourist attraction.

Interesting thing I just read about the Solheim Center: The Moody benefactor for whom it is named, Karsten Solheim, was the owner of the PING golf club company. He's the man who invented the perimeter-weighted putter, of which the blade connects to the shaft in the middle of the blade rather than on the blade's heel. A D3 school in Texas, LeTourneau University, has a gym called Solheim Arena, and I'll bet that Karsten Solheim was the named benefactor in that case as well.

Technicalities!  It was the training center in Deerfield that is named the Berto Center.  Forgive me I'm a central IL boy and to me everything in that corner of the state is referred to as "Chicago".   Was a great experience either way.  all 6 of the Bulls Obrien trophies are in a case on the side of the court, you would think that they would be spit shined daily and immaculate, but not the case.  They still have all the fingerprints on them from the players handling it after receiving it after the game which to me added something to it.

Denny McKinney

Fontbonne played in the Big 4 Classic in the Solhiem Center for like 15+ straight years. They have one whole section of trophy case dedicated to the "Origonal Dream Team." they used the facility before going to Olympics. Nice location since we stayed at The Inn of Chicago, just off the Miracle Mile. It was always the weekend of "The lighting of the lights parade". Great Memories!

Hopefan you are correct, it was Anderson who I was thinking of. We don't know who is returning (unless you have a Chism type email regarding these kids). It is obvious that Coach has a big contact out West. I feel like Coach Barber has earned the benifit of the doubt on getting this right. I'm sure last years concerns were covered with this years group.

Hope, I'm glad it was just GC's JC problem last year. And not the JC transfer in general. Great way to supplement a recruiting class with experienced players.

As a matter of fact, I do have an email that indicates Rollins, Anderson, Potts, and Metzler are returning, but Marquel Jones is not....  however, that email is 2 months old....  If it is correct, and these guys overcome whatever adversity existed in there first year at Grenville, it is a solid group....

Pretty exciting to see a pair of D3 alums leading the way on the big stage with the Boston Celtics.  Brad Stevens of DePauw and Jamie Young of Blackburn.

hopefan

Jamie Young must have been before I started following the SLIAC.... can you tell us anything about him?

Blackburn was before I knew of the SLIAC as well.  Played basketball and football there, graduated in 1998.  I know him from his coaching days at Greenville, he was a graduate assistant under Coach Barber for the 99 and 00 seasons.  Great guy with great passion for the game and for people.  Here is a SJR article that was written about him fairly recently.  http://www.sj-r.com/sports/x1037520539/Central-Illinois-Young-comfortable-in-Celtic-green?mobRedir=false#axzz2YINmwHUe

Sad day for SLIAC sports. Webster Univ's AD Tom Hart resigns to take the AD job at Berry U. in Georgia. WU Athletics is what it is through Tom Hart's visions and hard work. He will be tough to replace. Good Luck Tom.
