For what it's worth, I had no idea that Principia would even be included in the national colleges category or that it would be ranked higher than all the schools but one that are considered national colleges in the ODAC, where my Alma Mater (Randolph-Macon) competes. The only ODAC school that beats Principia is Washington & Lee at a pretty lofty #14, I believe. Kudos to Prin for being a more solid academic institution that I had imagined. Westminster falls below (but not by much) several ODAC schools including R-MC, and above several others. Not trying to get into a conference vs conference thing here. It's just that this was my frame of reference as I looked at the rankings after reading ECRD's post. I could have used CCIW schools, or schools form a number of other conferences (the NESCAC, for example, pretty much owns the top 10) but I wasn't really paying attention to those names as I scrolled through the rankings.

But, we should probably talk about basketball, and I would if I could think of anything to say. Just waiting for the season to start to inspire commentary.

Wonder when the SLIAC preseason Coaches meeting is.. anxious to see how the coaches think the standings will unfold this year....   for what it's worth wish the SLIAC would do it up as big as the neighboring MWC does... go to their site and there is a 45 minute video with the conference SID running down the preseason prognostications, as well as a 5 minute blurb of each coach discussing their team... really gets a fan prepared for the season and surely gets the players pumped...  Would be fun on the SLIAC site to have an audio each Monday or Tuesday discussing top prior week performances and previewing the new week's upcoming games... a little more than just the player of the week writeup....We obviously won't get any coverage in the Post Dispatch...

I have to chime in here and say that I think Commissioner Wolpert is doing a great job. Yes, it would be nice to do a few flashier things, but being a good commissioner isn't all about outward appearances.

Denny McKinney

Yjak, I agree with you 100%. in fact I'll go a step further and say that the SLIAC website has made great strides in appearance, in game scores and stories. My comment referred to visibility, access and the willingness to come on this site and clarify points of discussion. The desires of Hopefan require funding. I know the conferences SID is working on a shoe string budget. And, that conference members will never agree to pony up the funds for anything more then the bare necessaries.

Just to be clear, my comment had no negative connotations towards Will Wolpert.. just a passing idea... I'm not very worldly on the how to's of getting a video or audio on the SLIAC site, but I cant think it would be much in the way of cost... It's probably a matter more of finding someone who has the time and expertise and interest to have it done right... there may be a retiree out there who could help, NEXT year, unfortunately not this year....

Will Wolpert has done a fine job.. unfortunately he is spread very thin..

It seems to me at one point in time quite a while back, whatever the sports radio station was at the time actually had a short SLIAC report once or twice a week... it was probably before I got tuned into the conference because it didn't make a huge impression, but I'm thinking it existed... any other St Louis person remember that?

Denny, I'm not sure it's appropriate for an acting commissioner to get involved in these somewhat open and public discussions. I know, and I'm sure hopefan knows, that if you e-mail the commissioner with a question or comment you will get a response. Or if you see him at a game he is more than willing to talk to you and answer your questions.

Denny McKinney

It's all good Yjak. I don't have a single problem with Commish Will. He has done a fine job. I guess I'm kind of partial to Rich, because of a personal relationship we had. I'll go back to the fact that I don't think the Commishes office needs to due anymore then they are. I would say more than not, of the coaches would balk at the idea of doing a preview video. IMO

Why?

Denny, I think hopefan's question isn't why the coches would balk at doing a video preview. Rather, his question is: Why do you think the coaches would balk at it?

Denny McKinney

Ok Yjak. This is just my opinion. 1.) It's hard enough to get their game stats in. 2.) unless your returning a ton, what can you say after 10 days of practice. 3.) This time of year most will "poor mouth" their chances. 4.) They'll just blow smoke. 5.6.7.8.

Some don't even put season previews on their school websites.
