Thanks guys...

And, did you all see the Kevin Horrigan column about the Webster billboard touting its chess recruits?  Here it is: http://www.stltoday.com/news/opinion/columns/the-platform/foul-chess-team-boast-leaves-gorlok-jocks-shocked-mocked/article_7aa8c154-11fe-593f-8cf1-b84d5bccac67.html

I like the billboard which even made the Wall Street Journal: http://blogs.wsj.com/dailyfix/2013/10/30/at-webster-university-chess-is-king/

I also like that the athletes stood up for their teams.

For some reason, Horrigan does not like the Gorlok.  I never liked Horrigan, so...

WUH  I'd have been a little upset over the billboard as an athlete as well, but I see the marketing play

Denny, yes I was on the bench for that tourney game, my freshman year, great game, I had forgot all about losing the pg that year.  I think we were more concerned with facing Maryville with Jones/Shannon in the semi-final game.
Glad the team got to get a taste of life on the farm, funny I only ever convinced one of my teammates to come home with me to work on our family farm, and he had already grown up on a farm as well, so not really a new experience.

Drury beats Webster 87-63... Box score is pretty ugly... Webster beat badly on boards, 27 turnovers, no Aaron Griffin?  Ahmad Smith leading scorer 17 points, next is Kevin Miller, back after a four year hiatus with 13.

Not a surprising result given that Drury won the D2 national championship last season. For some perspective on two SLIAC teams compare it to Blackburn's 31 point loss to D2 Maryville.

Of interest to me is what WU players, other than returners, did. CJ Moore 10 min, 5 points, 2 rebs; Odjo 22 min, 5 points, 3 rebs; Marshall Moore 11 min, 3 pts, 0 rebs; Etter 13 min, 2 pts, 1 reb; Stolle 9 min, 1 point, 1 reb. The first four are freshmen, Stolle is a junior.

My thoughts are this...I don't want to compare Webster and Blackburn.. if Webster is at that level, this year, then Coach Bunch's Conf Tourney streak is in BIG trouble.. and looking at the stats of the returning veterans, besides Ahmad Smith, VERY disappointing  well Hollis Edwards was not too bad.. Granted the competition was big time, but I hope the performance is not an indicator of things to come.. Huskey, Edwards, Zehner, Walton have to perform every night out... they are the leaders now...... and where was Aaron Griffin... hopefully minor injury and not the same problem as last year...

You told me to keep my eye on Kevin Miller and I was 1000% skeptical... but you were right... can't wait to see him on the court next weekend....

hopefan. Agreed that this isn't a realistic comparison of Webster and Blackburn. But I was implying that Webster lost by less to a MUCH better D2 program than Blackburn did. Drury beat Maryville twice last year -- 78-37 (OUCH!) and 86-64 (ouch). So to the extent that any comparison is valid it suggests to me that Webster is at a higher level than Blackburn. How much higher remains to be seen.

For comparison. Drury went to Duke last week. Lost 81-65.

Denny. I was aware of that. Here is my post from November 3rd.

Just noticed that Webster has an exhibition game this Friday (11/8) at Drury in Springfield, MO. Drury won the D2 national championship last season and yesterday played an exhibition game against Duke, losing 81-65. Will be interesting to see how Webster does.

Westminster loses to Missouri S&T  103-83... were within 10 a couple of times in 2nd half... Leading scorer for Westminster was Brandon Moore with 35... Moore a 6'1" junior transfer, had played sparingly at NAIA Baker University, played at Blair Oaks HS....  Verdis Lee had 11...  Joe James did not play... Injury Bug (or something else) is looming big in the pre season, already missing Gentry and Dorhauer from Fontbonne, James from Westmin, Griffin from Webster.. hope all these guys are ready to go soon... the box score showed Westmin shot well, and outrebounded Mo S&T, but just got killed by turnovers, Westmin with 27, MO S&T with only 12... that's 15 more opportunities for the  D2 team to score!!   Anxious to see the many new faces playing for Westmin next weekend!!

Mind boggling.. attendance listed as 1100... at Rolla?  for an exhibition game against a D3 team? I'm surprised to say the least...

As fun as it is to compare teams across divisions, the Drury-Duke game is a good reminder that the takeaways from preseason games are extremely limited.

No way Rolla had 1,100 fans in that gym.

Agreed that from the standpoint of how a team will fare against its in-season competition, these games don't always offer the best insights. They are probably valuable to coaches, though, for seeing how players, especially new players, perform in a game situation.

Well I see 8 wins. Don't know where that fits into your scale.

Heard from someone who was there, that GC had a pretty good effort at Wash U yesterday. This was coming from a Wash U insider. He thought GC would do OK this year in the conference.

Unfortunately for us Denny, as we are both Greenville and Coach Barber fans, is that "OK" is the norm for Greenville... which hasn't been good enough....
