Then there's this from the Webster student paper: http://websterjournal.com/2014/10/29/webster-universitys-commitment-to-athletics/

I live in Webster and I support the expansion of Webster University on to the Eden Seminary campus, but apparently most others are convinced that they are entitled to use the vast Eden greenspace as their own personal playground.

I agree. I work on the Eden campus and my wife graduated from Eden in 2005. All the concerns expressed about Webster "crossing Lockwood" are things that can be successfully dealt with if the few but vocal Webster haters didn't somehow seem to have such huge influence with the city council. I don't understand that. I didn't see anything in the article that suggests Eden property is a candidate for use as an athletic facility, though, except the brief "you've got Eden" comment from the AD. But I don't see Eden space as a viable location for athletic facilities. I posted the article primarily as a contrast to the articles about MacMurray.

Did anyone notice (besides me), that the very first game posted on the D3hoops schedule on the front page is Spalding at Oglethorpe...

Why? (you might ask)

BECAUSE... Spalding and Oglethorpe tip off at 12:01 Saturday morning (Friday night to most college students) on 11/15... kinda cool... and we'll be able to get up Saturday morning with a SLIAC result to ponder while the rest of the D3 world preps for their first game that afternoon or evening.....

I'm counting on travelling up to Elmhurst that Saturday to see Westmin and Greenville play Millikin and Elmhurst in what I'm hoping will be a couple of closely contested WINS for the SLIAC....

The plan from a few years ago, I believe, was to lease the Eden fields for intramurals and campus recreation with the thought of building a soccer field.  It seems to me that there is enough space.

Admittedly, I use Eden as a playground, and so I know how often the neighbors use the campus for recreation.  You must see that too.  I love the Eden campus.  But I do not feel entitled to it, even if I am UCC too.

That field might have worked at one time for soccer practice with some appropriate preparation, however I don't think it would be a good idea to have used it for games AND intramurals. But now, with the 15 year lease at the Fenton soccer park, all with turf fields, it would make no sense for the Gorlok soccer teams to practice on grass and play home games on turf even if they still have to play some away games on grass. Also, I'm sure the Webster haters would make a big stink about putting artificial turf in that field, if that had ever been proposed.

Yes, I get that we went off topic, although it started with posts of articles about academic majors being dropped at MacMurray, and morphed into the above. It wasn't too long ago that we were learning the history of protestant denominations on this board.

I'll steer it back on course.  It is no secret that many institutions of higher learning have been in economic crisis mode in the past 1-2 years.  Schools the size of the SLIAC institutions that are tuition driven feel those enrollment hits more acutely.  Benedictine Univ. in Springfield, IL just eliminated its entire undergrad program (600+ students).  The MacMurray situation is likely a desperation move aimed at survival, as I think enrollment there has actually dropped under 500.  It is a major deal for a college to totally shift its mission, which Mac is doing, to try and attract more students.

On a basketball note, the EC women are playing D-1 Bradley University on Friday night in the sparkly, relatively new Renaissance Center in Peoria, IL.  An exciting opportunity for the program, even though the EC women's roster is a tad short on numbers.  Preseason 5th place in the SLIAC vs. Preseason last place in the MVC.

The soccer park no longer has a grass field?  What?

Admittedly, I am responsible for at least 50 percent or more of the diversions from SLIAC basketball.  I am sorry for that.  I do think that everything effects Webster athletics has the potential to affect Webster basketball though.

Otherwise, for MacMurray, I do not see it as a complete shift of the mission because ultimately, they are only eliminating six majors that were part of a department.  Liberal studies and Educational studies were majors comprised of courses from a host of departments, including Education and History.

Denny McKinney

FU hosts Robert Morris - Springfield tonite. Maybe a Hopefan report on a team he thinks is going to compete this year for a spot?

Denny, not much notice, but I may try to go over....

That's right. If you go back a page or two and carefully read the article I posted it also says Webster paid for much of that change from grass to turf, plus a nice new scoreboard for the main field that has the most stands.

What the heck, I'll save you the trouble: "In the case of Soccer Park, Webster entered into a 15-year lease with Scott Gallagher Soccer Club the current owners of the Soccer Park. Webster has agreed to pay $600,000 over the 15-year lease in addition to between $500,000 and $1 million that the university paid for renovations of the Soccer Park — including new field turf — in 2012."

Oh, and so I won't get in trouble, I'm looking forward to the start of Gorlok basketball because they play d3HOOPS.  ;D

Made it over to Fontbonne... they played 3 twenty minute sessions with the clock running during Out of bounds and Free throws...??  Robert Morris Springfield was pretty weak... Fontbonne Forwards Jared Greenlee and Ben Kissing out with injuries... Most of the Fontbonne kids got relatively equal playing time... Fontbonne won each 20 minute session by close score, total score amounted to 61-52 Fontbonne....  Not many stood out.. three who did were Darius Rucker, Garret McDowell, and 6'8" frosh Colin Schirmer.  Granted against weak competition, but Shirmer used his size and either hand to score easy shots when he got the ball low, finished with 5 hoops... not strong though, he'll get pushed out further against better comp....  Gentry played under more control than we saw two years ago, and with McDowell, Rucker, Kissing, Greenlee, there are guys who can score if Gentry draws the defense away and gets them the ball...Gentry can penetrate the key better than any guard in the conference, and can get by much of the defense when the Griffs push the ball.. but there wasn't much 'finishing' off it tonight...

Also chatted with the missing Kody Ettinger... he'll miss all year with a serious back problem, but hopes to come back next year... let's hope that can happen - a heck of an athlete....

Denny McKinney

You can't make a difference being silent. Sept. 4th I became the third generation of McKinney men diagnosed with colon cancer. Today I finished my 25 th and final radiation treatment. Sunday I will complete 35 straight days of 24/7 chemo. I'll be having surgery Dec 5th.

I have to carry on carrying the torch for my Dad. His foundation Coach Cares is back preaching early detection and benefitting Children's Hospital's Cancer Center. I'm doing pretty good. We've got a lot of experience with this. By 2015 I will be cancer free.

Thank you to Hopefan and Yjak for the words of encouragement. I will be at Sullivan HS's first game Dec 3rd. Guys a colonoscopy is a must when reaching your mid 40's.

Good Luck to all the teams.

We're all pulling for you Denny... Want to see you at some SLIAC games too!!  ;) ;) ;)
