Storandt was my favorite player on those teams along with Fornie... loved the way Fogerty played, but the "incident" with Coach always soured me somewhat....and a year or two later, also thought highly of Chris Forrest... those were great days on these pages.. 7 or 8 regular posters, all knowledgeable, all from different schools,  and really into it....wish we could get it going like that again... we have the readers, but.....

Who is the best point guard in the conference?   Here are some stats, conference games only:

PPG             APG           TOPG            A to TO Ratio

Kent   EC                          6.1               4.1             2.7                   1.7

Dorhauer  FU                    5.8                3.1             1.5                   2.1

Ehresman  GC                   8.8                3.6             1.8                   2.1

Fowler  IWC                      11.1              4.0             3.6                   1.1

Koeltner   Mac                   5.9                3.5              1.0                  3.5

Patterson   Prin                 11.0              3.6              3.2                   1.1

Gabriel     Spalding             14.0             3.1               1.8                  1.8

Etter         WU                     4.9               3.8               0.8                 5.0

Moore        WC                    11.8             0.8               2.6                  0.3

I may try to give some comparative stats for 2-3 position players and 4-5 position players in the future..

I'd like to see the Coaches make an All Conference team by position with a split like that, rather than simply voting for the highest scorers, which has been pretty much the trend in the past.. a point guard should be on the first team all conference, high scorer or not....

A plug for Greg Kent here.  Kent has been an incredible asset for EC even though ppg and assist to turnover might not show that.  He actually leads the team in Rebounding at 6.2 (8th in the league) and O Rebounding at 2.3.  There also is no metric for defensive disruptions that aren't steals, aka defensive hustle, and Kent brings that to a team sorely needing it.

hopefan

Thanks EC... good observation on the rebounding... not many guards lead their team in rebounding, though that may speak more to a Eureka weakness than a Greg Kent strength... perhaps I should say not many point guards WILLING to lead their team in rebounding..

Kent really 'confused' me after seeing him at Greenville ... 1 shot attempt, after being player of the week the previous week with double figure scoring... He just didn't take charge in that game as thought he might...

Well I'll have several more times to see Eureka play this year... I love their 'dark horse' status.. will be anxious to see if they can pull out a couple more wins against top 6 to make the tourney....  Huge week this week with Mac at home and at Fontbonne...  A win over Mac would be tremendous, but the one they must have is the win at Fontbonne...  and to remind you, Mac is not invincible.. the last 10 minutes of the game at Greenville clearly showed that....  I'm working on Wednesday so can't get up to Eureka.. please if possible give the readers (and me) any details on the EC-Mac game....

Just for fun, pgs vs. EC against their averages:

                          pts           assists              to

Fowler IWC      9 (-2.1)         3 (-1)              2 (-1.6)

Dorhauer  FU     7  (+1.2)       4 (+.9)          1 (-.5)

Gabriel SU         25 (+11)       3 (even)        1 (-.8)

Etter WU           0 (-4.9)         4 (+.2)           1 (+.2)

Ehresman GC   12 (+3.4)       1 (-2.6)         0  (-1.8)

Moore WC        8 (-3.8)          1 (-.2)           4 (+1.4)

Patterson PC     7 (-4)            3 (-.6)           1 (-2.2)

Only Gabriel significantly outperformed his average.  Dorhauer was just slightly better and Ehresman basically right at average.  Will see what Koeltner does tomorrow and will visit this again after the conference season.

It is a big game--will try to do a postgame write-up, if possible.

Hopefan sometime I'll tell you what really transpired in that huddle with Fogerty. There is a serious misconception.

hopefan

So let's look at tomorrow's 4 games... note both Prin and Iowa Wesleyan have non conference games tonight... hope both get a win...

Tomorrow night:

Webster at BC... critical question to be answered is will Ahmad Smith be dressed, or how long will he sit out... if he's out, Webster will have to find some scoring punch to help out Aaron Griffin and the 'hot and cold' Hunter Ward... Jonathone Odjo and Joseph Henry supplied it vs Fontbonne... Moore and Etter need to help a little too...Webster should win this, BC just doesn't seem ready yet....

Greenville at Spalding...   Huge game ...Spalding sits atop the hopefan standings, but Greenville could flip spots with them with a +1 win AT Spalding.   Greenville beat Spalding easily at Greenville.. Greenville beat them badly on the boards, and Spalding had a horrible shooting game... never saw Coach Gray look so disgusted... but since then, Renaldo Moore and James Turner playing much better, giving Spalding 2 additional weapons beyond Brandon Goeing and Brandon Gabriel... Greenville should be flying high after their unbelievable comeback vs Mac... Wonder if Stevonte Young will be available..... Harris, Scott, Smith, Daniel all tough matchups for Spalding... I think key for Greenville is to hold Goeing and Gabriel down... accomplish that, and it should be a huge road win...Another interesting point is that with a GC win, GC would hold a tiebreaker advantage over Spalding with a head to head sweep....

Westmin at Fontbonne..  a must win for Fontbonne... lose at home again to a bottom 4 (lost already to IWC), and it just about puts them out of the race for a top 4.. for Westmin, the only positive from this season will be to play better in the second half of the conference, and to be a spoiler.. it could start tomorrow night... wondering if Greenlee will be playing....

Mac at Eureka... EC has such limited size and strength... no match up for Whitlock or Johnson, and not the quick athleticism that Greenville used in their comeback.... as long as Mac plays their game, doesn't come in strutting, they should  win this one... but if Mac lulls, the one thing EC does best is play hard and aggressive.. they'll take it if Mac tries to give it to them....

They managed to beat FU without him (except for the first 5 minutes) so given that BC and WC are not having strong seasons, hopefully the Gorloks can still get two Ws tonight and Saturday and perhaps he will be ready for the rest of the season.

I'm thinking Aaron Griffin should have a field day vs these two teams... neither has a good matchup to defend  him in the post..

I'm still planning on going up to BC tonight to see BC - Webster... haven't been to Carlinville and that very special BC gym in several years... really looking forward to it.. hope they're still getting that wild student support...

Would say I'm shocked how close the WU vs BC game was tonight but without Ahmad Smith and the way Webster plays down to their competition day in and day out, this was about what I would expect.
Another big offensive game by Griffin but 22 points in the point given up and 11 second chance points. Has to be a better interior defender the rest of the way. He is so long and athletic that he should be able to affect a lot of shots. Also, again out rebounded by a much smaller team.

A win is a win though hopefully they can build. This team needs some confidence.

Side note... Webster bench players, nice work.
