A slight schedule change at Fontbonne.... Illinois Tech dropped from original Schedule, replaced by Morthland

Morthland, not Northland

I looked Morthland up and flipped when I saw their coach was a famous name in these parts... Rich Herrin.... who coached Okawville HS to over 500 wins, then moved on to SIUC and had several Missouri Valley Championships in the 90's...

Lo and behold, Morthland had 19 wins last year under Herrin's leadership, against mostly USCAA teams.... Coach Herrin is likely one of the senior-most citizens coaching college basketball at age 82... it will be a privilege to have a chance to say hi to him at Fontbonne....

So, we want to ponder a preseason All Conference team of returning players... 5 guys only...let's do it with positions too, a point, a shooting guard, small fwd, power fwd, and a middle man..... let's burn up this room with discussion from all the rabid SLIAC fans..

To me:
Point   Chris Fowler, Iowa Wesleyan.... he wowed me with his quickness, creativity... has to take care of the ball better this year

Shooting guard    Brandon Goeing, Spalding....   Steaky shooter, engine that doesn't quit... needs to be more consistent scorer with Brandon Gabriel gone.. has been fun to watch how far Goeing has come in four years..

3 spot - small forward    Parker Davidson, Principia.... the double edged sword I like.. shoots well AND goes to the basket... Hoping Prin can get a point guard who gives the ball to Davidson at the right times...

Power Forward.... Deavis Johnson, MacMurray.... Good grief, his scoring average should double with Whitlock and Guthrie graduation... Mac has to quit taking bad shots from the perimeter and find Johnson

Middle... Justin Ball, Prin.... With Whitlock, Griffin, Harris graduating, it comes down to Ball or Greenlee, and Ball is just so much bigger in the middle... if Prin gets him the ball low, he'll be tough to stop...

I'm surprised you could pick 5 without mentioning Hunter Ward. Went from sure fire D2 to know mention in the SLIAC. Wow

This is a pre-season projection and is certainly based on last year's performances. It's well within the realm of possibility that Hunter Ward could be on hopefan's list by the end of the  season.

CoachM

Rich Herrin actually coached high school at Benton prior to his going to SIU.

Thanks CoachM.... that wasn't mentioned on the Morthland site, only the Okawville record was brought up.. I was curious, Did he coach between his SIUC years and Morthland?

CoachM

Rich Herrin coached at Marion High between SIU and Morthland. Rich was at Benton forever. He coached Doug Collins amongst others and the gym at Benton is the Rich Herrin Gym I believe. It appears there is a typo on the website as I don't believe he ever coached at Okawville.

Amusing... it is now corrected...started at Okawville, then went to Benton....

Kudos to Webster Head Coach Chris Bunch and Sports Information Director Niel DeVasto for putting a review of incoming recruits on the school's site... I won't copy the writeup, but here is where it is:

http://www.websterathletics.com/news/2015/8/26/MBB_0826153730.aspx

I fail to understand why all SLIAC schools don't publicize newcomers like this, if not in the summer, at least when classes start and there is certainty that the players have truly arrived on campus.  Only Greenville and MacMurray have done this in the past.  One or two coaches have been willing to share names with me in emails, but several others are usually pretty tight lipped. I just think a writeup like this is so positive... it gets the kids fired up, it gets the fans fired up... WHY don't all the schools report it?  Seems like a no-brainer to me.....
