Incidentally... with Hopefan's All conference spreadsheet, where players are rewarded 0 to 5 points for their performance level in each game, what was a runaway for the top spot is no longer a runaway... in fact, by the narrowest of margins, we have a new leader!!!  The top two spots are a good jump ahead of the 3rd spot, and spots 3-10 are incredibly close.. another gap down to spot 11

with a vote of 5 being as good as you can get, and not easily rewarded... here are the 5's thus far

Eric Williams Greenville   (1)    G-F
Clark Davidson Principia  (3)       F
Trevaughn Goodman Principia (1)    G-F
Marcus Montgomery Spalding (1)     G
Rod Etienne  Webster (1)    F
Nigel Wilcox  Webster (1)    F
Romo Tabb  Westminster  (1)     G-F
Stu Hollandsworth  Westminster  (1)     F

uh oh   looks like there's a bit of bias against pure guards here..  because of turnovers, or perhaps shooting %, within a single game.....

if any of our regular readers want to single out a player, a particular game, why no 5?, I'll be happy to discuss.....remember, a 5 is a pretty near perfect game...

Just a few exceptional showings which I suspect did not make the 5* list:

Montgomery, Spaulding
v. Prin 19 points in 19 minutes while going 6-6 from the floor, 3-3 from 3 and 4-4 from the line.  He did very little else, but it is a pretty cool game.     not enough other stuff...only 19 minutes  3.5
34 pt., 2 reb, 2 steal game on 18 shots is also a very efficient    yes, that was his 5

Josh Johnson, Webster
v. Mac - 22pts (on 9 shots), 5reb, 5 assists... super efficient. ... 4 for 9 from field.... lots of free throws... he got a 4
Fontbonne - 27pts (on 13 shots), 5rb, 4 assists (4 turnovers?)   7 for 13 from field, 4 turnovers... he got a 4... this was Etienne's 5 point game

Kobe Wands, Westmin
v. Fontbonne - 33 pts (14 shots), 2 reb, 4 assists super game, but turnovers offset assists, he got a 4.5

Bateman, GU
26 pts (9-12 from the floor & 8 - 10 from 3), 3 reb.  No FTs or any other stats.  Just extremely pure shooting from the future all-time conference 3pt makes record holder.  And it shouldn't be close.    yes, his 0 across the board elsewhere got him a 4

Dix, GU
Jarryd Fernandez, IWU - 35pts (17 for 21), 18 reb, 3 assists in 24 minutes.  He did turn it over 6 times, but that was A LOT less then his 3 buddies that turned it over 10+ each.  layup man at the end of the press.. the turnovers took him to 4.5

Also fun to note that the at least 3 of the 4 (and maybe 4 of 4)  Westmin and Webster 5* games likely came in the two wins against GU.  Lots of Rebs and layups against GU.   you are correct.. all but Etienne's came in wins over Greenville.... a win can also make a difference between a 4.5 and a 5

I have a hard time thinking that Williams at GU wouldn't have the most combined 4* and 5* games. EW's still sitting at 23.3 pts., 6.3 rebs., and 3.2 steals per game. Those numbers over 40 mins are astronomical given he only plays 19 minutes a game.    include 3 and 3.5 games and I'd say you are right... lots of missed shots, and turnovers both can hurt the numbers...

GU... I really appreciate your interest.....+1...

So Montgomery didn't get a 5* for the GU explosion game.  hmmm...  51 pts, 5 boards, 3 assists (albeit with 6 turnovers).  I presume that the <5* is a result of the turnovers.  36 minutes against the system for a ball handling player, especially in a game where you make 6 threes at 50+% shooting and score 51 is a serious feat.  Which brings me to the fact that it really is fun to try to value stats against a system team.  I agree that end of break layup and rebounds are worth less when normalized against standard game, but this logic would also extend to turnovers.  Six against a system team for a guy playing 36 minutes in a ball handling position is on the high end of reasonable, but it is not necessarily unacceptable.

I was trying to find Matt Nadelhoffer's stat line against Grinell in the 95/96 tournament to get your feeling as to whether or not it was a 5*.  I can only recall that he had 20 assists.  Maybe someone from the CCIW board will recall for us.

For my taste, Montgomery's performance against GU is clearly the game of the year in the conference and it not really close.

Yikes, I went back and looked... you are right, Montgomery did get a 5 for the game vs Greenville.. I looked at wrong date on spreadsheet when I was answering your question...   he got a 4.5 for the other game... because he was 10-18, 8 missed shots, and had negligible stats elsewhere that night...

Yes, Spalding at Webster is still on, although they updated the campus closings to all day.

so tonight

Fontbonne hosts Westminster.... opportunity for Fontbonne.. time to step up, or start looking forward to next year...let's crunch those standings!!!

Spalding at Webster... big for both.. Webster to hold on to 1st place... Spalding to keep 3rd/4th out of reach of BC/Font/EC, and to edge a little closer to the leaders... if Spalding wins this one (they won't), I will finally become a believer in that team...

Fontbonne embarrassed at home by Westminster... the talent Fontbonne has is too good to be down 43-23 at half to a team that probably is at a similar level of player talent (though with far more experience).... if I were a Fontbonne fan, I'd be demanding some answers.....  as a SLIAC fan, I'm not in that position..The Griffs should be in the mix, instead, they are out of it.....

No Movila
No Cochran
Where are the big men?
and no Jones who looked very good several games ago...

You are right though... maybe that's the problem... do we have a plague of injuries???

on the other hand Webster looks solid in dismantling Spalding... late start due to OT in women's game... Spalding may be pulling into Louisville pushing 3:30 AM... hope no early morning classes...

I do think Fontbonne should be better, but injuries certainly may be a factor.

I still think Westminster is underachieving relative to the talent though admittedly I have barely watched any SLIAC games this season, so...
