I honestly like reading hopefan's posts even if I don't have any rebuttal. However his annual "pledge drive" reminds me of those Facebook posts that say, "I bet I can't get 50 likes" and similar posts, and not in a good way. Keep plugging along, hopefan.

I have sensed, with nothing to support the feeling, that participation on almost all of the D3 boards has been declining in recent years. It feels that way on the ODAC boards (football and basketball) which I attribute to the declining fortunes of Hampden-Sydney in both sports as they had several active posters who now post much less frequently.

The UAA board also used to have more posters in the years when Aaron Thompson, Sean Wallis, Troy Ruths, and Tyler Nading were at Wash U and there were some posters interested in Brandeis and one or two other schools in the UAA in those same years.

As for this board there was a lot more activity when I was refereeing disputes between hopefan and the late Denny Mckinney (RIP) back before his dad (former Fontbonne coach Lee McKinney) passed away.

To hopefan's question about being more controversial, you need someone willing to argue with you for that to work. A few of those types still exist, but for the most part things have calmed down all over these boards in the past five to six years.

The UAA board has been dead for a long time, but it was quite active in the years prior to the Final Four and national championship seasons.  The Carnegie Mellon fans were especially vocal, but NYU, Case Western and Rochester all had fans.  And, of course the only and only Brandeis super fan...

The conversation has generally not transferred to other outlets such as Twitter or Reddit so what happened?

Interesting quote from Greenville coach George Barber after the 200 point game vs Fontbonne...
"I told the team they went to the moon today. It's not often people get to go to the moon, but that also not everyone would like it, or respect it," said Greenville coach George Barber"

You are right coach...intentional fouling to get more possessions in the last minutes?  Did I see that right? If so, a sad commentary...

For anybody who didn't read the d3hoops.com front page about Fontbonne @ Greenville, the Panthers beat the visiting Griffins, 200-146. It broke three D3 records that I can find:

* combined points by both teams, 346, smashing the old record of 315 by Simpson (167) and Grinnell (148) on Nov. 19, 1994;
* combined rebounds by both teams, 136 (70 for GU and 66 for FU), breaking the old record of 124 set three times -- Chapman (65) vs. Redlands (59) on Dec. 5,
2003; RIT (72) vs. Thiel (52) on Nov. 18, 1988; and Illinois Wesleyan (62) vs. North Central (62) on Feb. 8, 1977; and
* combined assists by both teams, 82, breaking the old record of 79 set by Simpson (53) vs. Grinnell (26) on Nov. 25, 1995.

The play-by-play in the box score cuts out with 23 seconds left (must've run out of room; having scored a Greenville game in which I ran out of running-tally space in the book for GU, I know the feeling), with Fontbonne calling a timeout down 196-145. Why was the FU coach calling a timeout in that situation? Prior to that, it was just normal System game flow in the last two minutes, with the Panthers only committing two fouls.

ok, Greg, you are right up to a point..deliberate fouls took place only in the last 23 seconds... there was a wild scramble play at 23 seconds where Fontbonne ended up with possession on a whistle (jump ball, violation... I'm not sure... ) and Fontbonne calls a timeout... my assumption is to try to prevent the 200 mark from being reached....after the timeout, Greenville clearly deliberately fouls on the in bounds pass... fontbonne shoots fts(while the Fonbonne coach and one of his assistants clearly give a staredown at the Greenville bench)... Greenville comes down, misses a 3 but rebounds and puts it in at 10 seconds for 198...Coach Barber calls an immediate timeout, Fontbonne kids don't even go over to the coach, Greenville huddles, coaching staff exhorting them on... Greenville again fouls on the inbounds pass, Fontbonne shoots, Greenville comes down and scores on a drive to the hoop and rebound for 200....Coach Barber raises his arms in exultation, beating Fontbonne by 54 rather than 52....

so given it's a conference game, was this a wise thing to do?... ask the other 9 conference coaches.... Any other team up by 30, 40 backs off... it's called sportsmanship....and no, I don't want to hear it's derogatory to Fontbonne if Greenville backs down... To me, this was just as bad as when Grinnell got the kid an individual scoring record by feeding him the ball every time.. at least that wasn't a conference game, where relationships have been built over the years..

Yes, there will be arguments against my attitude, I'm just putting myself in Fontbonne's shoes..... I just don't think it was right....

Yeah, I called up the video and watched the final thirty seconds. I understand what George Barber was trying to do, and I understand the excitement that the GU players and fans felt as the Panthers hit the two-century mark (even though they missed tying the D3 single-game scoring record by a point), but I don't like it, either. I'm old school when it comes to sportsmanship; when the game is in the bag and you've got the ball with the shot clock turned off, you dribble it out unless the other team actively defends you.

It still boggles my mind that we get this amount of views per day, with so little feedback.... Thank you Yjack and Wooopiff for picking up on comments when I'm unable to post quickly... and thank you ECred for inputting on Eureka, especially in a tough year, and thank you GU1999 for joining in recently with some great insight.... and of course it's always fun to see what Fantasy guru Greek Tragedy or Encyclopedia of Everything Greg Sager (I say that with total respect and admiration) have to add... but what of all the other readers... would be so much fun to get positive or negative reaction to my remarks...I GOTTA BE WRONG SOMETIMES.... to hear from the insiders as to why this guy didn't play or that team performed poorly... instead it's a one man show for the most part, interpretting box scores and the occasional game I see on the internet, and it can't last forever... Redhead, where have you disappeared to???

Just keep in mind that every view counts here, even those where the page is loaded by a bot or a Google search engine spider. Not every page view is a human.

I have no problem arguing with anyone. But when it comes to this board, I usually don't have any ammunition.

Well, while Greenville gets the national headlines... the bigger news is the two upsets yesterday

Eureka bounces back to beat Webster,,, the Gorlocks can't do it without their Rock... Enrique Tankins... who provides that consistency and leadership which seems to hold everything together.. never int he game, now we have to ask where Tankins was, will he miss more?  It would be a shame... the loss moves Webster into a tie for first with Greenville, and as we have mentioned before, they meet on the final Saturday of the season, 2 weeks out... Eureka puts things together nicely, Dakota Bennington has a hopefan 5 star game with 26 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists...

Then Westminster goes and lays an egg at Spalding...this puts Westmin and Spalding in a tie for 3rd and 4th and no longer in the race for 1/2, with Blackburn one game back...That race could go any direction, so many big games remain in the next two weeks.. Could Eureka sneak in? Absolutely, but they'll need to beat Greenville, along with remaining games with Fontbonne, IWU, Prin and Mac, and do some significant scoreboard watching...

Hooray for Mac, who Squeezes by Prin... nice team effort, 4 in double figures...Prins Trevaugh Goodman and Micah Paulson have big scoring games, but their 9 turnovers likely hurt the chances of victory... a nice matchup between two frosh big men who have a great future to look forward to in the SLIAC... Mac's Logan Doherty gets 19 and 8, Prin's Clark Davidson gets the little double double with 10 and 12
Question to ponder... with Micah Paulson graduating, will Prin be able to win more games with Brennan Paulson at Point, distributing the ball to Goodman and Davidson....and will Prin be able to adequately fill the other two starting spots....

Blackburn takes care of business beating IWU., they get 33 points from the bench.. a game back, but in the thick of things....

I shouldn't let my distaste for what Greenville did yesterday mask several SUPER games by individuals..
Johari Dix gets 28 points, 9 assists, 5 steals
Eric Williams gets 38 points, 15 rebounds
Marvin Bateman gets 37 points, 9 rebounds...     note that's over 100 points from just a combined 3 man effort

One final thought... for Greenville to do this is, well, unexplainable... I don't understand it from the coach's mind set...
BUT
For Fontbonne to allow this to happen.... is ridiculous.....

one other comment about the Greenville game...

the announced attendance in the box score was 700
the capacity for the gym on the Greenville D3hoops page is 2000

So Something (one of those numbers)is off... the side away from the camera is packed, and the camera side looks pretty full too... by game's end, there are numerous fans standing at the court's end....

Whatever the number, it looks like a full house...FANTASTIC
