I think I smell something, and it's not an upset.

Excuse me. My bad. I had Taco Bell for dinner.

Would Eureka over Nebraska Wesleyan be the biggest upset in tourney history?  Probably. Can D 3 historians remember any other "ridiculous" upsets?  I can remember one to offer, but want to check the facts before I offer it up. How about it Greg, Greek,Pat, etal?

Here's the interesting thing though... because Eureka has experienced significant pressure from Greenville and learned how to beat it, just maybe they might be able to compete. They are playing their best right now....  Hank Thomas is so critical.

I'll buy into that. Obviously NWU isn't Greenville, but at least Eureka has an idea of what pressure defense is. You never know.

NWU plays a lot of half-court zone.  Not going to look much like Greenville.  They're a bit smarter with their shot selection, too.  Running could be a key, though.  Eureka's certainly good at high scoring games.

Aurora over Wash U last season?

Northwestern over St. Thomas in 2015?

Defiance over UWW that same year?

I think that if Eureka (13-14), which finished in a tie for third in a league that's never won a D3 tourney game, beats Nebraska Wesleyan (26-1), which returned practically everybody from last season's national championship team, we'll have a new winner in this category.

I'm certainly rooting for the Red Devils -- I'm as much of a sucker for David-beats-Goliath stories as anybody -- but the odds against it happening are astronomical.

Funny you should ask. Maybe here's 10 for you:

If NWU plays zone EC can force them out of it with their 3 point shooting -- if they are making them. ecreddevils makes a strong case for a good showing by EC. I'd love to see an upset.

ecreddevils

watched a bit more last night.  looks like they play a lot of 3-2ish zone and don't pressure a lot, but rather make it very difficult in the half court.  making 3s is clearly a key (bv 21-45, simpson  13-31, loras 14-30 in win).

offensively, very solid and disciplined, outstanding three point shooting team, 41.6%.  cook and hiller look especially dangerous, but everyone can shoot it from deep.  perimeter defense and limiting extra possessions are points of emphasis to me.

I had a feeling I would have to hear about that first round game from last season after seeing the Eureka-Nebraska Wesleyan match-up.  The last play of the game gets all the press, but the hardest part was that 2-8 performance from the free-throw line.

Unfortunately, WUPHF, if Aurora gives Augustana a game on Friday night, I can guarantee that the Augie broadcast team of Chris Ford and Dan Sand -- who are pretty exhaustive when it comes to doing their pregame homework -- will bring up last season's first-round game in St. Louis incessantly.

The good news is that if Eureka can somehow pull off the impossible out in Huskerland, last season's game will quickly fall down the memory hole for people who aren't affiliated with either Aurora or Wash U.

So, I guess I know which games to avoid on Friday.

By the way, it looks like Aurora lost Matt Dunn at some point early in the season.  Dunn and Marcus Myers were the story for Aurora, with all due respect to Ty Carlson.  Both Dunn and Myers made shot after shot after shot...

I was watching my alma mater on one screen last night and Eureka/NWU on another. Kudos to EC for playing hard and putting up a bunch of points in the second half. But NWU made it look so easy in the first half on both ends of the floor. If any team beats NWU they will surely earn it.

hopefan

Guess NWU used it all to beat Eureka.... had nothing left for St Thomas.

In all seriousness, congrats to EC for playing tough in the 2nd half... it had to make the experience be a positive one.

And yes, I feel bad for NWU.. the tourney is at its absolute best when ALL of the top seeds stay in....  but then, the tourney is made for the Cinderellas out there.

Disturbing news spotted in the Missouri Valley Conference Tourney Preview writeup in STL Post Dispatch

"First year coach Walter McCarty recently dismissed grad transfer Shea Feehan from the team.  He was averaging 9.8 points and had 54 3 pointers."

Wonder what went wrong.....  Evansville is 4-12, 10-20 10th seed entering the tourney....
