Always fun to see the first SLIAC box score of the season....it came from Fontbonne, who was blasted by SIUE last night 104-57

Starters were four players returning from last year...Clark, Woodcock, Wadlington, and Kleekamp.. and one new face, Domonic Doolin, a 6'5" transfer from Lincoln Land CC...  Noah Coddington got solid minutes off the bench...

Guys showing well were Doolin, 8 points and 5 boards, and guard Caden Clark, 13 points

2 frosh came off the bench starting their college careers on a positive note.. Elijah Rice from E St. Louis HS had 10 points, 3 assts, and 2 steals....  Cody McKinney (grandson of Hall of Fame Coach Lee Mckinney and nephew of avid Dhoops poster Denny McKinney, both passed away far too early), had 6 points and 3 rebounds...
Hoping Cody is talked about often on these pages for his performances... but it HIS life, and I'll  try not to refer to Denny and Lee again ... but I was very excited to see Cody get off to a good start... Lee and I got along fine,, Denny and I ran very hot, and very cold... but our discussions were likely the hay-day of the SLIAC room and hopefully drew in many readers who continue to follow the SLIAC on these pages.....

EC has an alumni game Friday...word is there may be some talented recent basketball alumni on the court.  Will be interesting.  Sunday journey to Naperville to scrimmage a highly touted North Central team that is ranked 3rd nationally and picked to win the CCIW.

If you get to Naperville, or hear word of results afterwards, please let us know...  EC is my dark horse pick to vie for SLIAC No 1 if guards and a bench player come through... I think Bennington, Dehm, and Juergens are really good.... I think they can match well with Webster, and EC proved last year they can play with Greenville.... Definitely a 3 horse race in my mind......

Good luck Ecred with North Central.  They appear to be stacked, loaded and ready to destroy.

My guys at GU will play them for real on Friday Nov. 15th.  They then play CCIW foe Carthage the next day.  The following weekend Gu has the possibility of playing Carroll on the 23rd depending on whether GU and Carroll both either win or lose their respective first round games.  Per the CCIW coaches poll NC is #1, Carthage #4, and Carroll T-7.  This is a great test to start the season.  I had heard previously that teams were reluctant to schedule non-con games with System teams, so I am glad to know that there are takers in the CCIW and although these games could reasonably end up in losses, it is better for the teams development.

For my own personal fun...

GU teams since implementing the system v. CCIW:

v. Elmhurst 1 - 1
v. Millikin 1-1
v. IL Wesleyan 0-1
v. North Park 1-0
v. Auggie 0-1 (2018 tournament) ** GU was leading 67-54 at half...  and managed to lose by 12.  Deep Sigh...

The three non-tournament losses above happened to be the first three games of the first season after switching to the System.  That was a rough adjustment period.  That team lost 11 of their first 13, but managed to figure it out and 11 of their nest 13 to end 13-13 and tying for the conf regular season championship.  Since those first three losses GU has won the regular season CCIW games convincingly culminating with a very lopsided game last year at Helwig against NP (153-113) in a game where GU took off the press with 5 to play (which is a System rarity).

Anyway it will be fun.  Good luck to both Eureka and GU.

Great news about the game being streamed.  Thank you for checking it out.

I am glad that GU is playing a quality SAA team in Centre to start the season, BUT for the sake of good team name alliteration I kind of with the fourth team in this tournament also started with a C.   Maybe Carroll, Carthage, Clark, Crown, Chatham, Capital or preferably Colorado College or Concordia- Chicago (.... 2 C's!!!).

A team list of Case, Centre, Central, Colorado College just sound better.   Its Not as good as Schrute's "Bears, Beets, Battle Star Galactica" ...

Signing off from Friday Fun time...

Or Case, Centre, Chicago, and Chatham, which all start with C but with four different sounds...

I think I have seen 100 or so different Division III live streams and Case Western Reserve has one of the best...

The GU @ NPU game wasn't played at Helwig Rec Center. It was played at NPU Gymnasium.

SYSTEM WORKING ALERT!!! (cough cough) SYSTEM WORKING ALERT!!!

The SLIAC Sportsmanship Policy has its first casualty.  Iowa Wesleyan has been banned from the conference tournament for accumulated yellow cards.
The 8 - 0 - 1 Tigers were set to be the top seed, but with three yellows over their last two games they hit a season total of 36 yellows which is an average of 2.25 per game.  Despite the 36 yellow's they did not have any reds on the season.  This Sportsmanship rule in all of its arbitrarienss, states that if you have 35 yellows or 8 reds your team is disallowed from participation in the tournament.  These boys knew the rule and they chose to violate it and thankfully the league's reputation is protected and these young men learned a valuable life lesson.  (cough cough)

Webster has to be thrilled with this outcome as they are the team that would have been out of the tournament but for this violation.  Nothing like backing in.

Yellow Card Stats for the Season:

IW - 36
Westmin - 31
FU - 28
GU - 28
SU - 27
Prin - 18
Mac - 16
Webster - 14
Eureka - 12
Blackburn - 10

Also of note, this rule doesn't adjust for number of games played.  Seems to add to the arbitrariness of the silly thing.

Actually Westminster, with an identical conference record of 5-4 to Webster, gets in the tournament due to a head-to-head win over Webster.

Your post sounds a bit cynical, as though you think there is something wrong with this outcome. Am I misinterpreting?

No firsthand report, but several sources tell me scrimmage was competitive.  After a 10-0 NCU run to start, things equaled out, am told 12 point 1st half margin, 4 point 2nd half margin for NCU.

EC has to be considered a clear conference contender.  After seeing platoon on Friday I'll speculate on a starting lineup:

Jalen Hosea 5' 9" Soph
Dakota Bennington 6' 3" Senior
Austin Juergens 6' 4" Senior
Jordan Dehm 6' 5" Senior
Jaedon Banks 6' 9" Junior

Off the bench contributors:  Ian Milsteadt 6' 2" Junior, Chris Daniels 6' 2" Junior, Kyle Henderson 6' 2" Senior.  J'Len Crawford, Kyler Stork, Austyn Ellison also factoring in.

I have not been bashful when expressing my feelings about the arbitrary "sportsmanship policy"  rule.  At the time of the discussion earlier this year, the board seemed very much in favor of the new direction.  This was despite there being no blue print from other conferences and little feel for where the lines should be drawn.  So, here we are.  One soccer/volleyball season into the new rule and we have our first disqualification.  It just so happens to be that the eliminated team is a first place team which just barley got over the arbitrary number of yellow cards.  Having not watched much SLIAC soccer I am curious was there a big issue with player discipline in SLIAC soccer play this year?  Was IWU egregiously bad; so bad that you want to penalize your best team from post season participation?   In soccer can't you can get yellows for a slight jersey pull during play, lining up too close to a free kick, or even missing the ball and getting only a man on a tackle among many other routine things that happen in the course of play?

A quick look at the CCIW to provide some context shows a conference which had 5 30+ YC teams.    Again, I don't know if that is terribly bad or not.  I do know that the SLIAC brain trust thinks that 35 is the magic number.

My query is that for those who support the rule, which may have included Iowa Wesleyan's leadership (Hope may have the vote totals), is, "After the soccer/volleyball season, did the league get it right this summer?"
