To me, it's a both... and situation.  Barber was a little more vociferous than I included in the piece about not having team consequences and keeping it to individual penalties.  I don't have a problem with team penalties (since coaches should be managing individuals to prevent transgressing the limits).  I do wonder if they could do a better job setting the numbers and I hope they'll continue to tweak it and adapt it moving forward.

It should be known, soccer has always had individual consequences - across the NCAA yellow card accumulation equals missed games.  There's no reason why basketball couldn't do the same thing for technicals (like the NBA does).

The team thing, if they get the right numbers, I'm ok with for sure.  I'd love to see other conferences experiment with this.

Eric Williams, Marvin Bateman.... not numbered on roster, not playing...   Someone explain.... I can only think negative until someone tells me positive....
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

I was told, on the record, as part of my interview with Coach Barber about the sportsmanship rules, they had a few players "we had to ask to sit out a year and we hope they'll be back next season."  He didn't go into a ton of detail and no names were discussed; my impression was they had some issues with guys being on board with team culture.  On a roster with 40+ guys, you have to expect this will be pretty common.  Greenville has also had a lot of JUCO players in the past - just because someone is listed with eligibility remaining doesn't mean they will use it (due to graduation or other factors).

GU1999

55-53 GU at the half.  No Williams or Bateman.  Although I did d see Bateman at the game.

Shot lights out first 10 minutes... but GU, how do you feel about what Ryan said regarding Coach Barber's "they had a few players "we had to ask to sit out a year and we hope they'll be back next season.""   I'm pretty disgusted unless further info comes out.. and I'm not an alum..

Are Bateman and Williams gone for the season?

From the Preseason poll writeup..

"the lone starter is a good piece to build around as senior guard Eric Williams averaged 23.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season while being named Third Team All-Conference. He will be partnered with one of the top three-point threats in the SLIAC, junior Marvin Bateman who averaged 15.3 points per game while connecting on 96 three-point field goals. "

Did Coach know when this went to press?

It could be grades or attitude or anything.  Just to be clear.  There are a lot of reasons why a player wouldn't be playing, especially at a school like Greenville.  It was in the context of the technical foul conversation, so that does matter, but there weren't a ton of details.

I can't get the live stats to work well enough to see it, but I did see at least one Greenville technical foul go by on the play by play while I was checking.  Down to thirteen.

Centre 132   GU 113   GU did a heck of a job considering the inexperienced lineup they put on the court....Main issue I saw was so many dipsy-doo drives to the hoop... no chance of making them...why not penetrate and dish... Perimeter shooting was pretty decent....

Maybe tomorrow. Need some time to process my thoughts.

Tre Rogers was definitely going to pose match-up problems for the Gorlocks, but otherwise, dang...

Illinois College 77 - Webster 55. The headline of the article on the Webster website says "Poor Second Half Dooms Men's Basketball...". That pretty much sums it up. In the first half it was nearly the same story. The Gorloks fell behind 24-8, but after a timeout they switched to zone, got some steals, rebounded better (that isn't supposed to happen when you play zone) and took a 31-30 lead. IC hit a 3 to make it 33-31 at the half. In the second half IC made adjustements to how it attacked the zone that worked well and that was it. Switching defenses several times was no help for Webster. For the game IC shot 50 percent from 3 (13-26) and nearly 50 percent overall. They out rebounded Webster 40-29. Webster had no answer on offense. No player stood out for Webster. Even having Nigel Wilcox would not have helped win this game. Only might have made it a little closer with a few more rebounds and defensive stops.

Greek Tragedy

Not a great start for the preseason favorite. Illinois College predicted just 7th in the MWC, a distant 16 points behind 6th place Lawrence. The bottom half of that conference isn't very good.
