Piedmont 71, Webster 64. Didn't get to watch it, but a disappointing result for Webster. They trailed by 10 at the half after shooting 30%. A 50% shooting percentage in the second half helped make it a wee bit closer, but threes weren't falling either half. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

GU1999

In light of the SLIAC Sportsmanship Policy and the severe penalties associated with violation of the 14 technical limit, I will attempt to keep a record of the seasons technical fouls (team and player).
Season totals to date:

Fontbonne 2 Ts:
CJ Purcell
Dominic Doolin

Greenville - 2 Ts:
S. Grady - a flopping T,
J. Cross - a hanging on the rim T)

MacMurry - 2 T's:
Ian Smith;
Tanner Payton

Principia - 2 Ts
Goodman - 2

Spaulding 1 T:
Brian Tribble

Blackburn 1T:
Karson Hayes

Currently, Fontbonne is the only team that is pacing to be out of the tournament as they are averaging .667 T's per game which is above the .56 T's per game threshold.  Additionally, Principia's best player is averaging .5 T's per game personally and is individually pacing for game suspension punishment(s) on personal aggregated Ts.

Webster gets a 78-60 win at Maryville. The announcers said Maryville graduated most of their starters from last season and were playing a number of freshmen. As I mentioned earlier Maryville also has a new head coach -- though he was an assistant for eight years under the just retired coach of long standing. I think Webster led the entire game or there may have been a couple of ties. But I don't think Maryville ever had a lead. The Gorloks started out on a 9-0 run, but Maryville made it close for much of the first half which ended with Webster up 36-30. It was close throughout most of the second half and I think it was 55-53 before Webster finally pulled away in the last 8-9 minutes. Not a very polished or pretty game by either team. Curious to see the box score. Free throw shooting was poor for both teams.

Interesting side note -- both announcers were players at Maryville while Coach Bunch was an assistant there more than 18 years ago.

I'm sure that game was VERY meaningful for Coach Bunch... I'm really happy for him...

AND... 3-17 is a heck of a lot better than 2-18

Hang in there SLIAC players... We're still out there rooting for you every game!!!

With so many games this week, so many box scores, it made for a lengthy review to decide on my SLIAC Player and Newcomer of the week

One of the things I fell back on was consistency,,, a bad game thrown in with one or two good games eliminated a number of candidates...

Hopefan SLIAC Player of the Week goes to Eureka's Dakota Bennington... He had 51 points over two games shooting nearly 60% from the field.
A close runner up was Principia's Trevaughn Goodman... Goodman had over 20 points in each of 3 games, and was 1 rebound short of 3 triple doubles, BUT he had a significant number of turnovers in each of two games that Prin could have won.   Alex Dentlinger of Iowa Wesleyan had 2 very good games over the weekend, but did little in a game during the week.. Enrique Tankins  of Webster had two double-doubles, just missing a third

Newcomer of the week was a tossup... so I'm going with co-winners
MacMurray's frosh Elijah Powell, had double digit scoring in each of three games. Totals were 44 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals
Doing just as well, but only in two games, was Eureka's Ian Milsteadt...31 points, 12 rbds, 5 assists, 3 steals
There were several significant single games by newcomers, but second or third games by individuals were far weaker...

Double doubles for the week
Enrique Tankins   Webster   13 points, 16 rebds in loss to Mo Bap
Enrique Tankins   Webster   13 points, 14 rebds in win over Maryville Tn.
Trevaughn Goodman  Principia  21 points, 10 rbds in loss to Wheaton
Trevaughn Goodman  Principia   21 points, 11 rbds in loss to Franklin

Greek:

Visiting Carthage was a great experience.  I have been Carthage numerous times to visit friends during my college days to recently spending the better part of a weekend there this Summer for a baseball tournament, but, I have never been to a game in Tarble.  It is a magnificent d3 hoops facility.  The game day experience was really well done. The pregame video to was great.  Band did well.  The house announcer didn't lose their voice and in a System game, that can happen easily (I'll have to say the House Announcer loves to announce the name of Carthage Freshman Fil Bulatovic - LOTS of energy on that one).  Attendance lacked a bit behind what I expected, but overall those in attendance were into the game and appropriately supportive of their teams.  I liked the student section isolating GU's Vinsel and giving him a hard time in the second half.  He certainly earned their attention going 7 for 9 from 3.

As for the game, I feel like there is a chance that GU let this one get away.  There were points in the first half where it looked like GU was about to break their spirit.  After falling behind double digits right away (down 18-6), GU built a 16 point lead before the half (up 61-45).   But, to Carthage's credit, they fought back with a big run to end the half and bring the score into a more respectable difference at intermission (68-63).  The key to the game was that Carthage turned GU over in the second half.  GU needs a large turnover differential to win and Carthage cut the differential into the single digits and thereby were able to pull it out.  The Johnson kid from Niles Notre Dame HS was the most efficient back end finisher I have seen against the press in my 5 years of watching GU's system.  He was 18 for 19 from the floor.  If someone charted the game, I suspect they would tell us that he had at least 10 two hand dunks and maybe 13 total dunks.

I will have to say the officiating was very poor.  It was obvious that the pace was getting to the officials and it was effecting their ability to call a good game.  In no way am I saying that the calls were favoring either team, I am saying that the officiating was much below the standard one would expect at a college game.  GU did benefit from Carthage's very emotional responses to the officials.  Carthage was VERY lucky to only have one Class A Unsporting Technical foul called against them.  #3 and #24 were hounding the officials all game long and ultimately #3 was hit with a C;ass A Unsporting T.  GU guys did a good job steering away from conflict.  A marked difference from the last year.   Carthage also picked up had a flopping T, which is a Class B Technical as it is categorized in the rules as a "delay" penalty.  It was for a play where the dribbler "head bobbed" to trick the official into calling a foul on the defense.  The officials recognized this as an attempt to deceive and given that both teams were already warned about flopping, a Class B Tech was awarded.  The box score does not show the Class B Technical.  As a result of this type of T, GU was awarded one FT and the ball remained with Carthage a per the rule (see below). GU picked up their flopping related "delay" warning on a made three pointer where the GU shooter did not go to the ground.  It was a very odd call.

It will be interesting in the SLIAC to see how the league deals with rule infractions which result in T's which are not Class A Unsporting infractions.  For example, face guarding, reaching over the inbound line and hitting a ball after a previous team warning, delay (flopping), rim hang, misnumbered players in the book, etc.   Based on the drafting in the SLIAC Sportsmanship Guideline, it just says in a somewhat simple minded manner "institution technical fouls," will count toward the 14.  Under this unnuanced definition, I can only imagine that all T's including those which are not Class A Unsporting infractions will count in getting to magic number 14.  I would have also have to conclude that the flopping (or Delay) Class B Technical foul will not be assessed to a player as there is a warning, etc and thereby not counting directly toward a players individual limit.

Flopping related Delay rule:
"4. Faking being fouled (flopping) on block/charge plays or attempted tries
for goal or using any other tactics such as a "head bob" which might lead
an official to believe that a foul has been committed."

"...One team warning shall be given to each team for the Player Delays in
Rule 4-10.1.c. Each warning shall be reported to the official scorer and recorded
in the scorebook. Thereafter, a Class B technical foul shall be assessed for a second
delay that has previously received either a coach warning, under Rule 4-10.1.b.2
or .3, or a team warning, under Rule 4-10.1.c."

Some additional class B Technical Fouls:
"Purposely obstructing an opponent's vision by waving or placing hand(s)
near his eyes;
b. Climbing on or lifting a teammate to secure greater height;
c. Knowingly attempting a free throw to which he is not entitled;
d. Possessing or using tobacco;
e. Grasping either basket in an excessive, emphatic manner during the officials'
jurisdiction when the player is not, in the judgment of an official, trying to
prevent an obvious injury to self or others.
f. Intentionally slapping or striking the backboard;
g. Placing a hand(s) on the backboard or ring to gain an advantage;
h. Touching a ball outside the cylinder (goaltending) during a free throw;
i. Reaching through the throw-in boundary-line plane and touching or
dislodging the ball while it is in possession of the thrower or being passed to
a teammate outside the boundary line as in Rule 7-4.6.b;
j. Deceptively leaving the playing court for an unauthorized reason and
returning at a more advantageous position;
k. Purposely delaying his return to the playing court after being legally out of
bounds;
l. After a team warning has been issued, attempting to gain an advantage by
interfering with the ball after a goal or failing to immediately pass the ball to
the nearest official after the whistle had been blown;
m. A team member entering the playing court without reporting to the official
scorers or a substitute entering the playing court without being beckoned by
an official (unless during an intermission);
RULE 10 / FOULS AND PENALTIES 99
n. Participating after changing his uniform number without reporting the
change to the official scorer and a game official;
o. Opponents of the thrower-in shall not repeatedly have any part of their
person beyond the vertical inside plane of any boundary line before the ball
has crossed that boundary line. (See Rule 9-4.3), or
p. After a team warning per Rule 4-10.2, a player or substitute committing any
of the delays in Rule 4-10.1.c."

^^^ That's interesting stuff. Did not kmow of different classes of technicals and there certainly aee a lot of ways to draw a Class B. I would assume (at the risk of falling victim to the alternate definition) that all those things were considered in developing the sportsmanship guidelines.
