It looks like they are playing a bit slower even compared to themselves.  I know that Greenville has taken it to warp speed the past few years, so everything appears slower in comparison.  Last year Greenville took 112.6 shots p/g and 57.6 3's p/g.  So far, Grinnell took 75 shots in their most recent game and 87 in their first.  100 shots (and 50 3's) is a standard "System" goal so that causes me to wonder if they are slowing it down or if they have some other issues going on.  Last year Grinnell averaged 89.7 shots p/g and 57 3's p/g.

I also have noticed that Grinnell has turned it over a lot for a system team in the first two games (28 v. Coe and 23 v. Wartburg).  In fact they lost the turnover battle by 7 in the Coe game.  I suspect that because turnovers forced/margin are also system goals, a System team that loses the TO battle in a game by 7, could move a coach to potentially modify the approach.  It will be interesting to see what happens tonight.

+1 Thanks for that detailed answer.

I figured there was an interesting answer and you provided it.

What a gutsy effort by Eureka to pull out the win over Grinnell... Can't express in words how impressed I was.   And without Jordan Dehm....  And Dakota Bennington Fouled out with the score even and several minutes left....super job by Jurguens, Josea, Banks and Milsteadt...
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Well... Grinnell played plenty fast tonight.  Likely had something to do with EU's willingness to run with them.  Grinned took 100+shots and 60+ 3's meeting traditional system goals.  They failed to force a system appropriate amount of turnovers.  Credit to Eureka for forcing GU into many contested looks.    GU looked pretty uncomfortable shooting generally.  GU's shooting woes persisted tonight.  Good win for Eureka especially in light of the foul trouble for Bennington and Dehm's DNP.

i don't know what happened at wartburg, but grinnell looked very much like old grinnell last night.  it was system basketball.  one small difference was overloading and trying to get simms into one-on-one situations at times.  they also have a lot of length, multiple 6-7 and 6-8 (on paper anyway) and will try and defend the rim, not many conceded layups.  i'd put them on par with greenville teams of recent years and think they'll do damage in the midwest conf. this year.

ec...looked incredible.  no surprise ec willing to run with grinnell, in constant attack mode.  so many good performances--bennington got his 1000th point and some hard dunks.  really impressed with millsteadt again; he's a heady player and very savvy and dangerous in transition and if he gets you one-on-one.  jalen hosea is really developing, super quick with the ball, matches anybody step for step defensively.  banks played a great game, rebounding machine, blocks shots, will be major asset in sliac play. when dehm gets back this team is set to roll through the sliac.

Last night on Hoopsville, Carthage coach Bosko Djurickovic, when discussing his team's defense, noted that GU's shot 25 of 49 3's against them.  He juxtaposed that against his team allowing 4 of 28 from 3 against UW-Oshkosh.     He went on to say that he thinks GU's is a good team, that [George] has some good athletes, and that there gong to do well this year.  From a true dean of college coaching, this is very encouraging.

Greek Tragedy

Barring unforeseen circumstances, I should be able to make it to Waukesha tonight. It'll be fun seeing Greenville in person for the first time going up against preseason AA Jack Davidson and ranked Wabash. If I stay long enough, I'll catch Conor "I'm not Connor Raridon" Riordon and Simpson take on the hosts.

The Greenville system games are exhilarating to say the least.

Friday November 22, 2019:

Greenville (1-3) v. Wabash (1-1) (@ Carroll) Wabash -5
Wabash is the favorite in the first game of the Nichols Investments Pre-Thanksgiving Classic.   This neutral site game features a highly regarded Wabash team that lost by one to Centre (who beat GU by 19) and they have also beat Earlham convincingly.    If GU can win it will be because Wabash is used to scoring from the perimeter and are a bit turnover prone.  They have taken 40.5% of their field goal attempts season-to-date from 3.  GU is very happy to have teams shoot a lot of 3's against them.  They are also averaging 16.5 a game against two teams that have a much slower pace.    If Wabash turns it over at that per/possession pace against GU, they could end up in the high 30s / low 40's for the game and if that happens, GU would knock off a top 25 team.  I just don't see that happening.    The reason I have the line so close is that GU really is showing improvement as the season goes on.  Last weekends showing against some top tier CCIW teams were encouraging.  I do fully acknowledge that Wabash is a very similar caliber to NCC and Carthage.   I look for 6'8" Harrison Hallstrom to have a monster game.  I'm thinking 42p and 13r.   Davidson, will be have a good game overall too getting close to a triple double.  And as much as it pains me, I think that GU goes to 1 and 4, albeit with the average Massey Rating of the four losses being 43 (24, 26, 51, 61).

Fontbonne v. North Park (@ Moody Bible): North Park -14.5
Fontbonne is reeling losing three in a row to start the season.  Adding to that they got beaten badly by D2 UIS in an exhibition game earlier this week.  Although I really don't know what to make of that game with UIS, I will say that the losses to SLCOP and Simpson and the drubbing by BVU, are not encouraging for Fontbonne.  North Park is coming off its best game in a while in losing an exhibition game (for NP) to NCAA Division 1 Chicago State by just 13 in a game where they really didn't shoot it very well.  team slashing a 41/32/100     Strong favorite is NPU.

Westminister (0-3) v. Hanover (2-0) (@Webster): Hanover -24.5
Hanover, who has already beaten Spaulding by 10, will proceed unimpeded against Westminster and cruises to an easy double digit victory.  Hanover mauled Boyce earlier this week by 60+ and will come to St. Louis with a lot of confidence.  I am not sure that the same will be true for the Bluejays as they are giving up 93 points per game to date (excluding the exhibitions).  This will not do against Hanover who is giving up 55.5 a game.   I suspect that Hanover controls Westmin defensively and the game ends up in the low 80's to mid 50s.

Webster (1-3) v. Manchester (1-3) (@Webster): Webster -9.5
Webster should win at home convincingly.  Manchester coming off a bad loss to Adrian.  And by bad loss, i mean VERY bad.  A 37 point margin to a Massey sub 250 team.  Webster, after some early season issues, seemed to right the ship a bit last week knocking off Maryville (TN) by double digits (18).  I expect Webster to win and for the margin to be right on the edge of double digits.

Best Case Scenario 2 - 2 (GU and Webster winners)
Worst Case Scenario 0 - 4
Likley Scenario 1 - 3

Greek Tragedy

Greenville just got another T for flopping on the offensive end. #30 took a 3 and then apparently flopped to draw a foul?
