Could be very interesting tonight and tomorrow.... 3 leaders playing 3 non contenders, disappointing 4th and 5th place teams face each other... great opportunities for upsets...

Given that there is a clear top three now, a *middle* four (all at 3-5), and one at the bottom, does that change the hopefan calculations for who are contenders and non-contenders?

I am not sure what the standings reveal at this point with only a few weeks left.

Mostly because the clear three have only taken one bad loss between the three teams.  Probably better to look at the remaining games to be played by Webster, Principia and Fontbonne.

-Principia is done with Fontbonne and has Webster at home.  Principia must travel to Eureka and Blackburn.

-Fontbonne has only lost to Principia and Webster and still needs to play Webster in Clayton.  Fontbonne must travel to Eureka and Blackburn.

-Webster has a one-game lead, but their loss is against Spalding (the one bad loss) and they must travel to both Principia and Fontbonne.  Webster has Blackburn and Eureka at home.

The way those teams are playing and the fact that there is only one non-contender loss... I do not see more than 1-2 more losses against non-contenders.

I am thinking the Webster at Fontbonne game has the potential to be crazier, more physical than usual.  Especially after the crazy post-season game last season.  I hope the officials are up for it.

Please correct any mistakes, this was done quite quickly.

And Spalding is going to beat Fontbonne by double digits, lol.

Webster also goes down.

Principia did not play otherwise they probably would have lost.

Greek Tragedy

What happened in Greenville? 86-84 over Webster. Definitely a bad loss for Webster. Did they decide to play a non-system game? Weird.

I watched the last eight minutes or so of that game. Greenville definitely used pressure defense, but not as intense as full-on "system" style, especially in the half-court. They seemed more patient on offense -- still moving quickly and trying to get quick scores if possible, but not as reliant on quick threes as they have been in past years. I think their three-point shooting is not as accurate as in the past. I also think they know that Webster teams over the years have always been able to exploit the weaknesses in the system and have therefore won more often than lost against that style of play. They lost at Webster by 25 on January 11th using what I recall was a more typical "system" style of play. Seems like they concluded that doing the same thing again might yield the same result, so changed things up a bit. It appears to have worked.

GU gets a BIG commitment.  Carter Clark, 7'1", is the son of former SLIAC all conference GU player Rob Clark.  He runs really well for a big and can also shoot it a little bit.  Coach Barber's boys seem to be executing a slightly more conservative version of the "GU system" these days.  Carter could thrive in that version.

A System defense, with three or four guys in the back court and that kid roaming the middle as the free safety could be pretty deadly.
