Fortunately for Greenville it won't reach the technical foul tiebreaker... :o  :o  :o

Greenville will have the stands packed if they get to host... Let's hope for the road win at Lyon...

Funny that you mention the Ts.  You know I keep a pretty close eye on those things.  Just stopped posting weekly updates years ago. 😀

Eureka and PeeWee were making it interesting early, but I do think GU is leading the race with 11, Eureka and Fontbonne with 10, Spalding with only 7.  Peewee stands at 4 and I think is in the lead individually although Dillard at Spalding has 3.

GU1999

Spalding comes from behind in the second half to beat MUW 57-47.

GU went up big at half, gave it all up immediately starting the 2nd, but stabilized and won 113-104.

GUs team first approach all season has been their super power. Crazy unselfish group.

#18603
The Conf Tourney is set:

#1 GU (16-2)
#2 Spalding (16-2)
#3 Webster (12-6)
#4 MUW (9-9)
#5 Eureka (8-10)
#6 Fontbonne (7-11)

Quarterfinal Games on Wednesday

Fontbonne at Webster* 7p

MUW at Eureka** 7p

*The 81st and final match up of these two great programs.  Split this year.  Should be a battle.  Must watch SLIAC game.

**My speculation is that this is a concession by MUW to play at Eureka due to travel concerns.

GU to host final two rounds.

hopefan

LONG trip MUW to Eureka Illinois....

GU 1999   the reason MUW is traveling even though they are the #4 seed and Eureka # 5 is that MUW is in a 2 year moratorium being the new guy in the conference.  A part of that Moratorium is MUW can not host a conference tourney game in their first two years..... they are good next season.   Hence... the 640 mile bus ride... wonder if they win, will they stay in Illinois for the Friday night matchup with Greenville

Great Explanation HOPEFAN.  I was envisioning Carnac when I read your post.

Unrelated to this basketball page, I am looking forward to being in your state all next week to watch a bunch of d3 baseball.

If you are near Auburndale and want to catch a game, I will pay your admission.

Last player of the week award was today.  Zero player of the week awards for the GU Panthers this year.

Last two seasons total number of conference wins/POW:

Spalding 28/7
Lyon 27/4
Fontbonne 20/6
Webster 23/2
GU 30/1

The conclusion I have drawn is two fold:
- there really were only a few weeks where one Panther put together a week to blow away the voters
- that the voters for this award have likely recognised the sum is greater than the parts approach at GU.

GU had 10 players average 7.2 or more with no one averaging more than 15. They really share the scoring load and that appears to be a big factor with POW voting.

Because there was not any POW recognition this year for the Panthers, I will throw one out there.

Vince Rodriguez had a great week Feb 3-8.  With wins over Webster and Westminster he averaged 22pts, 6.5 assists, 4 rebounds and 5 steals.  I'm hesitate to mention that he did it in 19 minutes per game, or else I have to find his per possession #s.  :)

That said, when it comes to all conference awards, I think that three Panthers should be on the top two teams:

Kiarie Patrick (first last year)
Ja'rod Webb (third last year)
Vince Rodriguez

Ja'rod and Vince should both get serious consideration for Player of the Year in the league.  They do it different ways, but both were fantastic this season.

Greek Tragedy

Greenville comes in as the #1 seed, primed to host and make the NCAAs. Hoping they can do it because it would be fun to see a System team in the NCAAs. Grinnell is the #2 seed in the MWC tournament. 2 System teams??? Crazy!

QUARTERFINAL MATCHUPS TONIGHT:

Fontbonne at Webster:

- Split regular season games.
- Fontbonne hammered Webster last weekend by 19 in the last game on Lee McKinney court.
- Webster will pull this one out tonight.

WEBSTER by 5.

MUW at Eureka:

- Split regular season games.
- MUW played great against Spalding last weekend.
- MUW plays slow and has quality size, but really struggles in up tempo games.
- EU likes to play faster and will be at home.  May help in dictating pace.

Give me Eureka and PeeWee in this one.

Eureka by 3

GU1999

Webster by 5 was correct, but I missed on the Eureka margin.

Final 4 is set.

#2 Spalding v #3 Webster on Friday at 5:30p

#1 Greenville v #5Eureka on Friday at 7p

All games in Greenville at HJ Long gymnasium.

Jacoby Johnson, Spalding University (Sr.)
Malik Madison, Lyon College (Sr.)
Karl Moore Jr., Webster University (Sr.)
Vincent Rodriguez, Greenville University (Sr.)

I would argue that Vince Rodriguez should be at least 2nd team, if not first.  Double digit points, 2nd in league in assists, first in assists to turnovers, Led nation in steals, and had 3.3 rebounds per game.  That said, Ja'Rod as 1st and Kiarie as 2nd is great and makes a lot of sense.  I am not totally sure that i understand Dariun Doss or Jamard Sykes II on the second.  Frankly, I probably just be happy we didn't have a repeat of the Eric Williams, Johari Dix sham.  Or the 1995/6 year when Doug Faulkner clearly should have been coach of the year.

GU1999

Webster out punches Spalding.
GU outruns Eureka.
Championship game tomorrow at Greenville.
Bunch v Barber

y_jack_lok

^^^ Since Coach Barber started using the System, Webster is 12-9 vs Greenville. The Gorloks are 4-6 in the ten games that have been played at Greenville.

GU1999

GU - 115
Webster - 104

Huge game from Kiarie Patrick.
31p/9r/5s

Webster shot it great.
Made 63% from 3.  Made only one less total than GU.

GU only lost boards by 1.

Gu +19 on turnovers.  Forcing 37 from Webster

GU extended lead to 18 with 7 to play and held off a late surge to win.

They both did it.

A quick review of the Grinnell box score doesn't really look that system-ish.  I know they've been modifying quite a bit since the coaching change.

Anyway, fun to have them both in.
