Pat, thanks for your SLIAC list and link. You did omit Webster from the list, however. I don't have time to look it up right now, but will do so later.

Pat & others - Do you think "margin of victory" enhances or diminishes a team's strength? My guess is that depends on who you played, where you played them, and the margin of victory/loss. Not sure it's a useless statistic, but my sense is you have to careful with how you apply it. Your thoughts?

I think over the course of the 300-400 games that have been played so far, the inconsistencies tend to even out. I don't know how MOV plays into the rating and I am not a mathematician -- I only know that in years past and in this year, the MOV rankings look more accurate.

Waaaaa, someone said something about my relegion.

What's the big deal? Do Christian Scientists have health care?  I don't know but I sure "point guard" will write a comlun about the difficulty finding a health care provider.....

Waaaaa, get over it.

Mac Attack

Somehow I feel about a 2-3 page discussion coming up on health care.......

I've been in the middle of these discussons.  I'm taking my hat out of this one.  I have no beef on Principia.  I've already stated I love the campus.  Awesome place.

Sorry point guard  -- I guess Mike owl doesn't fit into the list of mature posters that I defined.   I appreciated the brief explanation of Principia's doctrine that I requested of you.

To all, a merry Christmas.  With no D3 hoops to watch in St. louis for a week, I think I'll catch some high school hoops at the Merrimac tourney starting Tuesday - Many good St Louis area teams in that one  -  Y Jak's Webster Groves HS is the top seed of 16 teams.

As to the Massey ratings posted, they're pretty sensible - I can only hope Maryville has been pulled down further than they deserve having played a tough schedule, and that they will move up against SLIAC competition.  But as everyone says, it's really an 8 team competition at this point.
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Mac Attack

There's a number of terrific high school basketball tournaments throughout Illinois. A remarkable number of talented players, not all of them who will play D1 or D2. Hopefully the SLIAC coaches can spend some of their break time scouting as many of these players and lettnig them know of the academic and athletic opportunities available in the SLIAC. I think one of the most blatant myths concerning D3 is the cost. From my own personal experience, most D3 schools have a numbre of different ways to financially help a student/athlete if he/she qualifies for the aid. Beyond the state and federal grant and loan programs, most D3 schools have their own grant programs that can be awarded to qualifying students. I have been stunnded by the amount of grant resources available at "private" schools that are not available at "state" schools. When I talk to parents about their sons or daughters playing at the D3 level, the first response is almost always "we can't afford the cost of a private school." But once they're made aware of what's available to students who may qualify for a variety of financial aid programs, it becomes pretty clear that a school like MacMurray, Greenville, or Eureka is just as affordable - if not more so - than Eastern Illinois, Eestern Illinois, or the University of Illinois - not to mention the fact their sons or daughters can participate in sports at the collegiate levl.

Merry Christmas to all. Have a Blessed, Joyful, and Safe holiday season.

Depending on a person's job, I wouldn't know if all have heath care or not.  My job as a senior producer for sports television gives it to me.  I use it.  If you read my earlier post I stated to each his own.  I happen to go doctors and have always had health care.  My wife and 2 kids are covered as well.  I've never had trouble finding it.  It's always been given.

Hopefully that answers you question.

Happy Holidays.

As far as strength of schedule for SLIAC teams and whether scheduling weaker teams brings the SLIAC down.....I say does it matter?  Is the SLIAC ever going to be respected?  As a former player that never came to mind.  In D3, we play because we love the game.  I wasn't thinking oh we beat STLCOP by 15 that win doesn't mean anything because they suck or had a down year.  A win is a win, loss is a loss whether it's to IC, Rhodes, Knox, STLCOP, Grinnell or any SLIAC team.....Just my take.

Mike Owl

I demand an immediate apology for hopefan and MacAttack....

I am Jewish and Merry Christmas is very offensive to me, or mabey I am Muslim, or I celebrate Kwanza.  I just won't accept a simple Merry Christmas.

actually hopefan the mature thing to do when someone says something you don't like is either open a discussion or ignore the comment.  You can call me anything you want... it really dosen't bother me anyway but to call Pat Coleman (one of the fairest people this board has ever had post) imature, is well, imature.

p.s. for those of you who cannot read tongue in cheek, I don't really want an apology.

Mike Owl, you must be a spin off from redrum.  Someone who does nothing but cause trouble.  Unbelieveable.

Speaking of tournaments, I know everyone on here is from Illinois/Missouri, but here in Indiana, we have a tournament at ledgendary Southridge High School (Huntingburg, Ind.).  It's the annual Herald Tip-Off Tourney (Moved to christmas because Southridge played for a football state Title.)  Big named teams invoved.

Class A: Northeast Dubois, Loogootee.
Class 2A: Southrigde, Forest Park.

Forest Park is the defending Class 2A back to back state champions, coached by Tom Beach (146-31 over 8 yrs at FP).

Loogootee is normally a dominate school in Class "A" ball.  Jack Butcher used to coach the Lions.  Butcher is the all time leader in coaching wins in Indiana.

Southridge is rebuilding a little.  They are normally strong as well.  They and Forest Park come out of the same sectional and is one of the tougher southern class 2A sectionals.

NE Dubois isn't a lot to shout about.  Small town school of about 200ish.

Not that anyone cares about this tournament, but I figured I'd give a drop in for my Indiana schools! :)

Merry Christmas to all! :)

I don't believe he did that.

This board just keeps getting worse.

Huge Congrats to Coach Knight for tying Dean Smith.

Favorite broadcast comment: The fact that Knight has tied Smith with only coaching one future NBA All - Star (Isiaha Thomas), compared to Smith's long line forming behind MJ. While accomplishing all this he still has managed to graduate 95%.

In this day of hyped up high school athletes, "Many" players, parents and casual fans think a coach is nothing more then a traffic cop. Just running talented athletes in and out . This helps re-affirm the fact players still need to be coached to win.

I'll post score from Tampa. It shouldn't be pretty, but I bet the kids play close for the first 30 minutes.

Happy Holidays
