Congrats to Westminster, Webster and Maryville on picking up their first win of the season. Pretty fair night for the SLIAC all things considered.

I don't know that Maryville reached 78 points too often last season, so that's very impressive. It will be interesting to see how they do vs. Platteville.

Not a good night for the Red Devils vs. Whitewater. I guess most on this board were expecting a beating, but I was hoping for a closer score.

Was at the Webster game today, and one word, AMAZING!  Webster was down 1 with 2.6 seconds to play and they inbounded the ball to Ryan Turk who took two dribbles and launched a running shot at half-court and swished it.  Webster won by 2.

It was 22-16 at the half, with Hanover holding the lead.  Typical of a Hanover team, they play half-court offense, use a lot of clock, and cut and screen all over the place.  Webster trailed most of the game until about the 2 minute mark when Turk hit an off-balance 3 to tie the score.  With about 35 seconds left, Webster was up 1 and threw the ball away.  Hanover scored to take the lead, and then Webster responded with a layup with 20 seconds to go.  Hanover hit a jump shot to regain the lead with 2.6 to play, and Webster quickly inbounded the ball, and then... Turk created magic!

Obviously, Turk was the star of the game.  Other players who played well were newcomers Niebrugge and Tiemann -- who is an excellent shooter with a quick release!  Perhaps, what is most encouraging is the fact that Webster still prevailed despite average performances of Kuhn and Hoggatt.  The balance and depth of this team will definitely be one of this teams trademarks!

Besides Turk's half courter, the play of the game was Brad Robinson's pass to Niebrugge for a layup at 20 seconds - great look, great cut, great pass.

Aside - wow, sat behind the Hanover bench  -  that coach is tough  -  in the kid's faces when they screwed up.....

Another aside  -  SLIAC refs, nothing changes - subpar, zero consistency in calls

Hopefan, that is good ol' fashion Indiana hoops for you... Hanover plays very good, disciplined, team oriented basketball!

Blackburn loses to MO-Rolla 73-53,  Tough one for the Beavers, Rolla really shot well in their gym, which made it tough for the Beavers to contend with, Tommy Baro led with 17 pts, while 2 freshman, Blake Doehring and Jeremy Lutz had 7 each.  The Beavers play Millikin Monday at home, hopefully they can come back and get a win.  Anyone know anything on Millikin??

They are nearly unanimously picked for last in the CCIW, but I can't offer much beyond that.

Well, Greenville lost their home opener against Dubuque.  Tyler Daugherty had 24pts and Drey Porter was behind him with 19pts.  Porter had a lot of open shots and GC defense wasn't able to capitalize.

For GC, Terrance Cosby had a great welcoming into the college world of basketball coming off the bench with 12pts, 3rebs and 1stl, also 100% on 4 free throws.  Also playing in his first game, Ben Cochran led the team in scoring with 14 and 4ast.  LaPhonso Ellis had a difficult time finding a rhythm offensively scoring only 5pts, but fundamentally rebounded with 10, 7 of them being on defense.  Chris Simmons had 13pts and shot 6 for 7 from the charity stripe.  Ben Hensold had 9pts, all coming from beyond the arc and Chris Hohm had 11pts.  After this game, GC should now know what's need to be done in order to win games.  This was a good team to play on the first game cause they'll see this kind of play from a few other SLIAC teams, I'm not saying that as Dubuque (in the IIAC) being a part of the SLIAC.  I had the chance to catch this game live and will see some more throughout the season.  GC was making a good comeback towards the end, but it just wasn't enough.  I have to say, I'm excited to see what's going to happen for the rest of the season for GC.

Greenville has some good returning players despite the loss of Conquest.  Their perimeter game last year matched up with the better teams in the conference.

Interesting that new faces played leading roles in their opener.  Of course, Greenville's downfall last year was a distinct lack of size and rebounding power  -  no presence whatsoever in the middle.   If this problem has been addressed with new faces, Greenville should be a contender for a SLIAC playoff position.

Thanks for the writeup, Oldschool....

Only one thing to say, go Gorloks. This is a great start for a great team. A hearty congrats to Coach Bunch and the entire squad and coaching staff.

I would also like to extend a congratulations to FU on their win over Moody Bible. FC News - can you provide a recap? Thanks.

Millikin's got a trio of very solid sophomore C/PFs in Zach Ott, Robert Rexroade, and Joscar Demby. However, the Big Blue have huge question marks at the other three positions. Charles Warren and Keanon Harrington regularly came off of the bench for the Big Blue in the backcourt last year, but their do-everything PG from last season who elected not to return to the team for 2007-08, Drew Gensler, not only handled the ball all the time but did most of the scoring from the backcourt -- which means that Harrington and Warren really aren't that experienced at doing anything but grunt work. And none of the returnees besides them did anything more than come off the bench a few times in blowouts as far as varsity play was concerned. The Big Blue need a whole lotta people to step up in unfamiliar roles for them to make new head coach Marc Smith's first season a success.

MacMurray won the consolation game of the John Dawson Tournament up in Adrian, MI, defeating Marygrove, 78-67. Neil Compton had 26 points and Billy Long added 12 for the Highlanders (1-1).

Buncherific - I don't have the stats in front of me. All I can say is it was ugly. Over early. FU had 5 in double figures (three with 20+). My personal bright spot was Josh Branch's 22 with 6 assist and 0 to's. Josh was named to the all tournament team. Big minutes this weekend from freshmen pt. guard Ben Rapp. In the two games he avg. 18 mins. was a total of 5-6 from the field and 0 to's. Ben handled Wm. Penn's pressure defense from larger players with ease. Fogerty had a solid weekend and Storandt had 13 rebounds against WP and 23 for the weekend. McCoy played solid as usual. Cartez Parker saw action in both games but is still rusty.

Side note: Justin Storandt found out prior to Sat. game that a very close friend was killed in car accident. No decision has been made but he may not be available tuesday against RHIT.

In general, two solid efforts and a great weekend. If anyone gets the chance, the Parade down Michigan Ave. and the lighting of the lights (Christmas) is a must see.

Congrats to WU great opening weekend and a nice win from MU and WC.

Regrets to Justin on his loss...

FC - keep me up to date on his status vs Rose - trying to decide which game to go to - FU vs RHIT  or MU Wash U  (leaning towards FU-RHIT)

Hope - I don't think I'll be much help on the Justin update. He will be a game time decision. Coach McKinney told Justin to go and take care of this and left it to the kid to decide if he was ready to play. After, an emotional thing like a funeral you never know how these young people will handle this. And it is just another non - conf. game.

Just a note: Other Midwest teams that appear on Caltech's schedule this year. North Central and Grinnell

But it is a regional game...  and an important measuring stick  _Rose had a good win over Montclair State (A good New Jersey state school program), but then lost close to the home host of the tourney Manhattanville.

This is one of those games that will show how Fontbonne measures up against a good HCAC team - we have already seen that Webster is 'there'.

Whatever, I've already talked myself into going to the FU-RHIT game.  I have a rough time thinking MU can keep the game close versus Wash U.
