Dec. 12, 2008 - Fontbonne University junior guard Patrick McCoy set a school and conference record with 13 three point field goals to lead the Griffins to a 100-66 win over Principia College.

Saw where Mac trailed Webster by 7 at the half and lost by 14. I think others on this board were predicting a more lopsided score. If anyone saw the game, please enlighten us. Just by looking at the box score, this game wasn't the blowout that some had expected. On the stat sheet, Kunz didn't do much. Kurtz from Westminster didn't do much against Mac either. Wonder what's going on...

McCoy was on fire yesterday. Congrats on the record. When he's cool Branch seems to be hot or visa-versa.Sheetz looks to be gaining some confidence on the floor. Rapp is already in the game. These Griffins are beginning to roll. It was a little dicey at first, but they seem to be in gear and rollin'.I want to say how good the refs were yesterday.Worth every dollar they are getting. They don't miss a thing.WOW.

Gem Shooz, Mac played very well yesterday. Compton had an excellent game and schmidt played well. Littrell did a nice job in the low post against taller defenders. Polston hit a couple of looong 3's. The big difference was getting outrebounded by 10 and hot shooing by Webster in the second half -- especially Ryan Turk who scored 20 of his 29 after intermission. The play-by-play isn't available (at least I can't find it), but I think Webster's lead was 14 or more throughout much of the 2nd half. Webster moved the lead to double figures pretty early in the half and never let Mac really have a shot at a comeback.

Just wanted to mention that Hopefan and I met up for the 2nd half of Wash U. vs. U of C. There are about 3 teams from the SLIAC that would make a very competitive game with U of C.

Yjak - yes you did miss a heck of a shooting performance. The kid was 12-15 before feeling the pressure. All of the first 15 attempts were in the flow of the offense. Principia went to a zone late in the first half, do to Fogerty's inside play. FU came out of the half with the Webster - Prin. game in mind and Prin was still in their zone. Branch hit 3 3's in about 4 mins. and they went man to stop him and that freed up Patrick.

Westminster took a 40-39 game in the 2nd half and made it 60-40 when EC bogged down offensively. Maybe people that have only seen EC play once or twice don't think the team is very good at all and maybe they're right. But for someone that's seen them play most of the games this season, it's really frustrating to see the guys play so well for most of the game, but get completely dominated for about a 5-10 minute stretch that ends up deciding the game.

Against Fontbonne, it was a 19-3 start to the game...vs. Maryville, it was a 14-3 run in the 2nd half. I know that's the nature of the game...if you play long enough, teams are going to go on spurts against you. But EC just needs to find away to shuts these things down quicker so it's not so hard to recover from them.

We've been going for 2 months with games, so it's easy to forget over half the regular season still remains. There's still plenty of time to make some noise this season.

Some notes on the Westminster team...they are probably the least dependent on their starting line up of any of the top 3 teams. I think you have to like that over the course of the regular season. Overall, their talent level is not up to par with Fontbonne...I haven't seen Webster yet by the way. I don't see them losing many at home. Really, Westminster missed quite a few open shots, especially in the 1st half. Some will point to their lack of size, but they out-rebounded EC by 11.

Buxton is a solid player. I would like to see him go to the basket a little more. He's strong enough and a great free throw shooter. I could see this team falling in love with the jump shot a little too much and getting in trouble that way. The Jays will be a factor in the title hunt and don't rule out them hosting the tourney when it's all said and done.

This wednesdy nights match up between FU and MU has been the one game I have dreaded. It will be a game of composure and patience for the Griffins. MU's extremely physical pressure defense is capable of getting in the heads of opposing players. FU will need to protect the ball and be strong with each and every rebound.

MU is a very tough place to shoot for visiting teams. The large space behind each basket makes it tough for depth perception.

From the films and scouting reports, it's like the old Blackburn teams, foul till the refs get tired of calling them. I'm not saying that is MU's intention. Just an observation.

If, the Griffins keep the turnovers under 20 and return to their inside out offense, it will be the first time FU has gotten to 10-3.

FC, As Maryville typically uses 14 or 15 players, they have a lot of fouls to give!!!!!!
A Maryville win will help Maryville more than it will hurt Fontbonne, as it would separate them even further from the pack that seems to be competing for the fourth playoff slot.  I don't see any danger of Fontbonne not being 1,2, or 3 even if they lost a game to the "pack".

But I don't think it will happen....

Personnally, I'll be torn as to rooting interest - Let's just say I'll root for a close game.

FC incidently, Saturday's Fontbonne box score vs Prin credited Cartez Parker with a minute played  -  error?, or was he really back in uniform?

oh and incidently, FC, Yjac, Furdog and lurkers - check out the current CCIW standings if you want a quick chuckle.....

Hopefan - A statcrew error. The player wearing that number was Ryohei "Yo" Yoshioka. Yo made FU history saturday becoming the first Japaneese player to play at Fontbonne. Yo is actually a very talented player and a great shooter. He played for one of Japan's premier select teams. He is just very undersized.

So Hopefan, are you suggesting FU should tank wednesday night? To insure a all Missouri conference tourney? NOT!!!

hopefan

Hadn't thought of that FC, but it would throw an interesting twist to the betting line!!!!!!

That is actually REALLY FUNNY.....  I'm dyin'   I can see coach Mckinney sayin, " now boys we st louis schools gotta stick together - we don't want those Illinois guys wreckin our post season party - and Coach Rogers, why he's almost like a son to me - why, I taught him everything he knows  -  why don't we back off a little tonight..."

TOO MUCH

That's all good. But, Coach is very fond of IL. kids. He spent 9 yrs. on that side of the river during his H.S. career.

But, you do have a great Saturday Nite Live skit there.

FU does need to lessen the amount of turnovers. They must work on protecting the ball. They have done a better job this year of assuring rebounders are in place before making long shots.Their number of assists should also be up ( I think ) from last year. This has balanced their game better. They now have  presence beyond and inside at the same time with their offense. That makes those defenses  work harder. This is a hard team to wear out physically.Opponent's tanks will run low most times before theirs. The bench appears to be expanding with Rapp and maybe Sheetz. Dressler can hold down his end defensively. I really don't think they will be miffed by a team that wholesale subs. They shoot well from the line so fouling them hurts you. I don't see the MU game as being a run away win , but I see it getting done.

As I will be going to the Maryville Fontbonne game, as will FC, and Yjak is unable to go over to Greenville for the Webster game, is there any reader  out there, ie a Webster parent, who would like to exchange phone calls tomorrow night to pass on scores?

If so, just tap on my hopefan id, it will take you to an info page with my email, and email me your cell phone - I'll be glad to call you at half time and at the end of the MU FC game..
