Final From Greenville, Ill.

Fontbonne 78, Greenville 73 (Final / OT)

From the VP of Greenville, the Panthers could not finish.  Miss some key free throws in the end.  Great crowd at the Jungle though.  Too bad Greenville couldn't pullout the upset.

MacMurray barely escapes the Beaver Dome with a win tonight with a score of 91-86 thanks to some free-throws at the end. The officiating in this game was extremely poor. The fouls called and not called at the end of the game gave the Beavers no chance at tieing or taking the lead in the final seconds. It seemed that the refs were more concerned about the fans then the actual game. When they were watching the game, slaps to Macs players wrists drew whistles yet when the BC players bodies were being tossed to the floor, their were no calls to be heard.
Mac shot amazing in the 1st half going 12-15 from 3pt land. They were up as much as 20 but the Beavers were able to chip away and make it a game in the end they were also able to take the lead with under 2 minutes left.
Go Beavers!

Webster 59 - Westmin 56. Very exciting game. Webster up by 2 at the half and goes up by 11 early in the 2nd half. But Westmin comes back. Game is tied at 54. Kuhn finds Turk underneath for a reverse lay-up, 56-54 Webster. Westmin ties it at 56, gets a defensive stop, comes down, works the offense when suddently Turk makes a steal and is fouled immediately with about 7 or 8 seconds left. Makes the first free throw, misses the 2nd Westmin rebounds, Whitcomb steals the ball for Webster, finds Turk for a layup, 59-56 Webster with 2.6 seconds left. Westmin tries a long inbounds pass that gets tipped in the air by a Webster player, is picked up by a Westmin player who fires a wild shot. Game over. Terrific defensive effort by both teams.

Heartbreaker out of Greenville.....

LaPhonso Ellis had a huge game leading the team with 18pts and 8 rebounds, despite being sick. He really is a huge player for Greenville, and I know there were doubts about his height earlier on the board, but in my opinion he has not only proven them wrong but shown he can play with anyone. Simmons played with alot of heart and  I agree with Panther that he has gotten back into the swing of the game and out of his slump. Ben Hensold was hot at the 3pt line hitting 4-7 and coming up with 12 pts for the Panthers. Ben Cochran continued to play as well as he usually does adding 10pts and playing some good D and really directing the ball. He has matured alot already this season with his decision making and I can only see good things to come out of him. Terrance Cosby had a huge first half. He was a key player coming off the bench and immediately made his presence noticed. He came in and hit a quick 6 or 7 and played good D. I don't think he got as much playing time in the second half as he deserved and probably could have made a bigger impact if given the oppurtunity. But, he ended the game with 9pts.
Greenville really has matured over the season and tonight was a tough loss for them. They had a lot of momentum going in tonight and a huge crowd come out to support them leading their voices and cheers constantly throughout the game.
*Kudos goes to PantherPride for igniting school spirit from 2000 miles away!*

Finally, Fontbonne deserves some credit. They were the favorite coming into tonights game and were down at half-time. They managed to play through all the fans and showed their maturity and skill. Fogerty, Branch, and Storandt had huge nights. Fogerty seemed unstoppable. Almost could have been a heart-breaker for Fontbonne who had the chance to win in regulation, but missed 2 free throws with mere seconds left in the game putting it into over-time.

Good, hard fought game and it was definetly an awesome game to watch and be a part of. My heart broke for my Panthers because I think I as well as most of the fans wanted the win just as bad as the players.

Lincoln Christian 93, Eureka 76

The Red Devils walked in to one tonight. LCC took it to EC all night long. There were stretches when it seemed like Lincoln couldn't miss, but really it was their ability to hang onto the ball against the EC pressure D (9 turnovers) and control of the boards that was the difference.

LCC came out on fire and ran out to a 30-10 lead. From there, the game was almost even. EC got as close as 9 early in the 2nd half. Jon Wallace was dominant inside for LCC with 20 pts and 12 reb. Matt McComb had a great game in a losing cause for EC with 23 pts. Darnall had 17 as EC did get some things done offensively.

This may be hard for some to believe, but I believe are aren't too many teams in the SLIAC that would have been able to beat LCC the way they played in this game. EC gave them every reason to believe they could win by getting off to a slow start, but LCC played very well right until the final bell.

This was a good lesson to learn in a game that does not hurt you in the league standings. Sure, it's not the greatest way to head into the big game with Maryville, but who's really thinking about what went on 3 days ago when the ball gets tossed up before the start of a big game?

Interesting results around the SLIAC tonight. Webster squeaks by on the road over Westminster, who has now lost 3 straight by a total of 8 points. It's not near panic button time yet in Fulton, but talk to me again if they lose at Maryville next week. Webster has a cushy home slate remaining as the regular season title likely hinges on the Fontbonne/Webster game next week.

Speaking of the Griffins, they avoid the upset by Greenville in O.T. Nice call by Panther on the overtime, but he had the wrong winner. FU plays some dude I've never head of and had averaged under 10 min. a game the full 45 in this nail-biter? Greenville plays 45 minutes at home and gets to the line 9 times? It would seem GC had Fontbonne on the ropes up 6 at the half and not having to worry about McCoy, but Fontbonne shoots 61% in the 2nd half.

And then there's the controversy at the Beaver Dome. It would seem from the stats that the reason Mac won this game was their amazing 3-point shooting (15-27) and not so much the officials, who called 7 more fouls on Mac and sent BC to the line 10 more times. Perhaps dynasty is correct about the poor calls as it's not necessary to have equal fouls on both sides. Plus, he was there and I wasn't. Thanks for the report either way, dynasty.

wow

bizarre box score on the Fontbonne Greenville game  --  I knew McCoy had missed prior game with what FC had termed as a sore wrist - did not expect him to miss this one... but then obvious replacement Rapp also doesn't play - a real shocker  -  will look to hear from FC on what the medical/other situation is with both of them

kudos to Abozen, who played all 45 minutes, likely hadn't played 45 minutes all year prior, and does it with ZERO turnovers!!  The kid deserves player of the week!!

AND Fogerty goes 1 for 7 from the line??????????   What????

Poor Westmin, 3 losses in a row with chances to win or tie in the last seconds....  I saw the same problems in the Fontbonne and Webster game - they failed to take care of the ball and get a legit shot - vs Fontbonne they muff the ball and it rolls away, vs Webster they throw it right to Turk, and vs Greenville, which I didn't see, I read they offensive foul the ball away.  Hard to understand with 3 good guards who are capable of finishing a play....

three huge plays for Webster in last seconds
1)Kuhn makes a pass to Turk as he is falling out of bounds to get Turk a layup, increasing lead to 3 - Westmin comes down and ties with a 3
2) After losing the ball and giving Westmin a chance to win, Turk comes from nowhere to steal a pass - gets fouled, and makes the first to put Webster up 1
3) Turk misses the 2nd, but as the rebound goes towards the corner, Whitcombe comes out of the scrum for the ball, whips a pass to the cutting Turk who clinches with a layup

So there is separation...

Webster +2 wins at font and Westmin
Font  -1 loss at home vs Webster
Westmin - 2    loss to Greenville, loss at home to Webster
Westmin is virtually out of it for first, unless Webster were to falter big time by losing to the "pack" - Westmin really can't do it themselves
The Fontbonne Webster rematch means everything, it's at Webster, and as of last night, Fontbonne is woefully shorthanded - hopefully the injuries or problems are cured before next Wednesday

FCNEWS - THIS ROOM DEMANDS TO KNOW!!!!!!! WHERE WERE MCCOY AND RAPP?

Middle group...
Greenville +1 win over Westmin
Maryville  0
Eureka  0

Barring crazy upsets, only one major matchup on Saturday - Maryville at Eureka
Crucial for Eureka to stay in the race only one game behind Greenville
Crucial for Maryville as it is an opportunity to catch Greenville and put Eureka at a huge disadavantage.

Great time going over to Fulton  - lots of good conversation with Yjak, fun also sitting with furbug and his son.  Scared the heck out of Yjak when I tried to run over a large fox getting on the highway a Kingdom City  -  what the heck, I had the right of way!!

Bizarre call of the season -in the Westmin-Webster ladies game -  at least a call that I've never seen or heard of before.

As a Westminster lady is shooting the second of two free throws, a player on the Webster bench, at the opposite end of the court, is vociferously encouraging her teammates to be ready to rebound.  The shot is missed, and the official under the basket blows his whistle.  The Westminster player is awarded a "do over" for the "blatant" distraction.  Yes - I checked with the coach, it was not a lane violation or anything else - but a penalty for the bench players distraction.
WHAT?   Now if a bench Technical had been called for unsportsman like conduct had been called, I could understand.  But a "do over"??

Incidently - whoever gave me the negative Karma - I didn't really try to hit the fox, dummy, it tried to hit me.... ;D

I cannot let this one go. Hopefan is so prone to exaggeration someone has to put a stop to it. I was not scared by the fox. I was simply amazed that hopefan didn't see it until it was safely (by 1 foot maybe) past the front of the car. I saw it coming from the side of the highway. Time to see the eye doc, hopefan.  ;D

On the plus side of this incident we spent the rest of the drive talking about all the times we should have been killed in driving situations but came away unscathed.

The FU v. GC game was all it was billed to be.

In the first half Sr. Ben Hensold was 4-4 from down town and FU shot a horrible 35% from the field. The Panthers took a 33-27 lead into the locker.

Second Half saw the Griffin's come racing out of the gate to tie the score with 14 minutes to play. FU built a 8 point lead late in the half, but poor free throw shooting allowed GC to tie it with under a minute on the clock. Fogerty had a chance to win it with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. Brian a 70+% ft. shooter missed both and it was on to overtime. It might be mentioned that Fournie held Hensold scoreless in the 2nd Half and OT.

OT - AS mentioned above Fogerty was unstoppable. He scored 6 in the extra frame. Storandt had a big drop step dunk and Fournie had a crucial off. rebound and put back. FU had the lead up to 8 again before exchanging baskets. Cochran hit a 35 footer at the buzzer as the Griffn's celebrated, to make the finale score 78-73.

Stats: Greenville - Ellis 18 pts (8-19, 0-4), Simmons 14 pts., Hensold 12 and Cochran 10

Fontbonne - Fogerty 27 pts. (13-17), Branch 22 pts., and Storand 17 pts. and 12 rebounds.

Last nights atmosphere far exceeded that of the Conference Tourney Championship game last year. Props to GC and the students and fans.
