Just to set the record straight, the young lady Eureka SID spoke about was given a TWO game suspension and was put on probation until 1/30/08, the one year anniversary of the incident. Probation meant any further fighting or rough play by her would result in a long suspension. Had the victim been injured, the suspension would have been longer.

When handing out punishments, I always tried to change behavior and the probation was tacked on with that in mind.

I'm sure the new Commissioner will handle this case appropriately.

If she was given a "TWO game suspension," then perhaps Blackburn should be forced to forfeit a game this season to make up for the fact she only sat out ONE game last season. In fact, the player didn't even miss any conference games. I would have thought as a former commish you would have remembered this better, or least done some simple research or follow up work to make sure. I know there's plenty of people around here that were following how this was handled VERY closely and were quite steamed over the how things shaked out.

And just set the record straight, the player that got punched WAS injured (how could she not have been). I know she didn't miss any games, but that doesn't mean was playing at 100%, or even close to it for that matter.

Eureka played Balckburn on Jan. 30 when the incident happened. That boxscore can be found here:
http://www.sliac.org/womens3/wbasketball/2006-07/stats/wbb119.htm

Blackburn then played a non-conference game on Feb. 1. She did not play in this game, but who really cares...I don't think this was even a Division III opponent: http://www.sliac.org/womens3/wbasketball/2006-07/stats/wbb125.htm

Then, the player returns to play 26 minutes in Blackburn's next game Feb. 3 against Fontbonne thus only sitting out 1 game: http://www.sliac.org/womens3/wbasketball/2006-07/stats/wbb130.htm.

I guess I can't really refute what the former commish is saying...that she was given a 2 game suspension. But be that as it may, there is NO DOUBT that she only sat out 1 game!

Player of the week in the SLIAC:  Not to take away from Aaron Steinke from Maryville, but did the conference not see Ben Cochran's stats from Greenville.  Here are the comparisons.

Aaron Steinke    points  37      14 of 23    61%

Ben Cochran      points  49      21 of 28    75%

Can someone tell me how they are choosen?

It has been called to my attention that a 2nd 1-game suspension was served by the player at Blackburn later in the season in a game versus MacMurray. Whether you want to call this a 2-game suspension or 2, 1-game suspensions is immaterial.

What is very important to me right now is that I issue a sincere apology to the former commish. He handled the situation with the utmost care and integrity and it was unfair and rash of me to question his recollection of what happened. This was out of line with the kind of person I strive to be, and personal attacks on such good-natured individuals alike the former commish have no place on this board, or anywhere.

I also apologize to anyone at associated with Blackburn for any offense they may have taken from my comments. It is a situation that was dealt with by the proper authorties and should have been let go.

It was misleading since the suspension was not served consecutively, but that in no way excuses my actions. I felt I knew much of what happened, but was not aware of everything, which led to my error. I find it hard to sit back when Eureka students are harmed in such ways, but I will try to be more careful in the future.

Mackbacker, I would agree with you.  I've had a number of people tell me that Cochran should / should have won this week's award.  What a week for Cochran.

About the player of the week, I agree with both opinions as well.  The only way Steinke should have won player of the week is if, for example, he hit a game winning shot or something of the like, which I am assuming he did not.

I have returned from a very tough 5 days out east - am looking forward to reinvigorating my psyche with Wednesday's games.  Sorry to hear about the Prin - Fontbonne incident - can only hope that Brian Fogerty will be able to recover completely.

Good to see you back in the saddle, Hopefan!

Get Sat.'s film of that FU/ Prin game to the conference commish ASAP
What they called on Myers was the wrong call.
He didn't accidently get under somebody, push or shove somebody, gouge somebody.
HE TACKLED SOMEBODY FROM BEHIND
Then he was left in the game to commit his 5th.
Principia should not be left to disipline this player.
It's the conference's job to evaluate it.
Was his intent to hurt another player ?
Do you know him well enough to make that call ?
I don't.
I know what I SAW.
I heard it wasn't the first time he committed a similiar act.

Justin Myers played 25 minutes against Blackburn last night - so much for a suspension from the coach.

Big games in the league tonight, capped off by the Greenville / Eureka match-up in HJ Long Gym.  I'm hoping the crowd shows up like they did for the Fontbonne game.  Any thoughts on the rest of the games on the slate?

A review of the records and remaining games shows each of Greenville, Maryville and Eureka have a clear shot at the all important 4th spot in the standings.  Interesting too is how Westminster and Fontbonne finish (who is 2 and who is 3) could directly impact the 4th place finish - Maryville will be rooting for Fontbonne whom they beat once, Greenville will be rooting for Westmin, whom they beat once.  Should Eureka beat Greenville, and likely finish tied with Maryville, Maryville would get the tiebreaker by virtue of its win over Fontbonne.  If Eureka were to beat both Greenville and Webster, they would have a big edge.  There are numerous scenarios

Safe to say that while tonight's 3 games are all huge, no clear 4th place team will be established at the end of the evening.  Of course, if Maryville were to upset Webster, they would be sitting very nicely with only Mac and Prin remaining on their schedule.

Also interesting to see at what level Fontbonne can compete given the absence of Brian Fogerty.  I wonder if there is ANY chance he could safely return for the conference playoffs - I hope and wish so, but realize chances are slim....

Good to get these games played before the weather moves through on Thursday/Friday.

I will be at Maryville - will contact Eureka SID and FC to keep tabs on the other two games....

I just noticed that Webster has dropped out of the regional ratings - very disappointing - also Maryville women not in Womens' regional ratings.

Not sure how a men's team like Webster or Maryville, who do play a solid schedule, can move up without not only playing good teams, but beating them too - the overall top to bottom competition that the SLIAC presents is currently just too much of a drag.
