Good grief, went to article that Titan Q posted - check out this Majerus statement:

"There is no question as to Daniel's character, on and off the court, and his commitment to being an outstanding student-athlete," Majerus said. "As we all know, NCAA scholarships are tendered on a year-by-year basis, and Daniel's competitiveness and commitment as well as his character should add to our team spirit as well as our goal of having extremely competitive practices this season."

As a senior, Lisch averaged 9.2 ppg and 3.0 rpg this past season for the Maroons and helped the team post 15 victories.

That reads to me that he's coming in to be a practice player and cheerleader...   Hopefully Daniel will be happy with that role....  I'll reiterate my opinion that this is a highly suspect decision by the family ... Why not play ball at D3 rather than be a contributor to extremely competitive practices?
Well, I guess everyone doesn't have to feel like I do...
I need some help on this D-1 question.

If he is a student-athlete on scholarship on the basketball team, will his GPA count towards NCAA guidelines and statistical analyses of the effectiveness of the SLU program at graduating student-athletes?

Thanks.

For some interesting discussion about D3 players and their potential for playing at the D1 level, go to the "South Region" then "ODAC Conversation". If you decide to check it out, you'll have to go back a number of pages to pick the conversation near the beginning.

And I have to agree that the full-ride scholarship -- even if only for a year -- was a huge factor in Lisch deciding on SLU. A family with three kids in college has to be looking for all the financial help it can get. It sounds like they are getting the maximum help possible. Still, as the parent of a college student on a generous scholarship, I know there are other expenses beyond tuition, room, board, etc. associated with having a kid in school.

Since he's on scholarship, I can't see why his GPA wouldn't count. In fact, Ralph, if I'm following your line of thinking, Lisch's academic background may be one of his stronger selling points as far as Rick Majerus is concerned. While graduation might be another matter -- Lisch looks like the kind of kid who is a prime candidate to spend two or three years at the far end of a D1 bench before transferring to a D3 school to finish out his career, "big fish in a little pond" style -- I can see Majerus thinking to himself, "I've got a couple of spare scholies sitting around that I haven't managed to fill yet. Why not give one to Kevin Lisch's little brother? He'll show up for practice every day ready to bust his tail for me, and he'll probably help the team's GPA a lot more than would any juco fly-by-nighter I could find at the last minute to sit at the end of my bench."

The decision to attend SLU was much more of a family thing. A chance to be on the team and travel with his brother for his senior year.

More interesting is that Majerus has a scholarship to give to someone who will be redshirting. Plus, the article says he still has one available. Could this speak of this years SLU recruiting troubles?

hopefan

I was under the impression that SLU was having a solid recruiting year, but Majerus had cleaned house to the point that he had 7 or 8 scholarships to give.  As I expressed earlier, perhaps, if it doesn't look like Dan Lisch will be contributing on the court in the long run at SLU (ie, his scholarship does not get renewed) he will look to transfer to a program that will be able to use his talents on the court.  Who knows if it will be Fontbonne?

The real shame of it is, he was such a perfect fit to help THIS YEAR where Fontbonne would have needed it with Chad Fournie's graduation - an unselfish distributor, tough nosed defense.

Let's not forget that if Daniel Lisch doesn't stay at SLU he can still get an athletic scholarship at a D2 school, and next year we will have one right here in St. Louis.

Good one Y jak  -  can't think of anything that would displease our buddy FC more than that....

He will be redshirted this year. Still have four yrears. If it does not work he will be at FU next year.

I agree with some of the previous posters that if SLU is competing for recruits with Fontbonne then that would seemingly spell trouble for Rick Majerus' Billikens.  That is no knock on Fontbonne, but rather a knock on SLU.  In fact, kudos to FU and Coach McKinney for even being in the mix of obtaining a top notch recruit that is also being sought after by a local DI school.  It is awfully difficult to compete with a program that has a new arena, can offer scholarship money, and has a recognized basketball icon as their head coach.

Additionally, I agree (from what has been said) that Lisch sounds like a better fit for a DIII program -  speaking stricly from a basketball perspective.  With that said, Lisch may have been attracted to SLU's strong academic reputation.  Many other factors come into play when one is choosing a school.  He may even develop into a key contributor for the Billikens in the future.  It is not unheard for a redshirt or walk-on to become a contributor in his  later years.

With the talk of Daniel Lisch, at least the board has once again become active with Basketball talk...

So Buncher, are you at liberty to discuss specifics on Webster's recruits?   Would love to hear about them....

And FC, can you tell us about performance in the summer league - time flies and I never even saw a schedule.  Four starters are obvious for Fontbonne assuming all are returning.... did anyone take an early step during league activity towards claiming that 5th spot?   How did Lisch fit in?  Would he have been the likely candidate?  Or is Sheetz or one of the returners obvious?

All is quiet on the Maryville front - I've heard nothing, and seem to have been taken off of Coach Roger's mailing list...????  I guess it was my way (D2) or the highway......

On the Lisch subject: Wednesday evening during Bernie Miklaz's drive time program on Sports Talk 1380, they had a section called the Buzz. They read a release that stated that Daniel Lisch was named a member of the Billikens 08-09 squad. It went on to say that Daniel would be transfering to FU at the end of the year to finish his career and education.

Could of used him this year though. Frontrunners for the fifth spot would be Sheetz, Nolan Zoellner (Wash. H.S.) and Colton Bailey ( Zelma H.S.).

THAT is VERY "different"   -  I can't say I've ever heard of a preannounced situation like that in my 37 years of association with D3/college division ball  -  aD1 scholarship kid committing to a D3 school a year and a half in the future....   the Lisch family must have a heck of a lot of pull at SLU.

As I posited earlier, maybe SLU needs him for his GPA this year!  :-\

hmmm  maybe a new NCAA eligibility rule... average gpa per recruiting class... that 3.8 could pull a couple of 1.4's over the hump!!!!
