Falcons escaped Jackets, barely, last night. Both teams shot poorly, esp. Superior with 34 %. RF shot 43%. Voeltz led RF w/23 pts., 9 rbds., followed by Koonkaew's 15 and White's 12.
Smith, Helland, Culy all around 13-15 pts. Both Smith and Manor off their games. Manor finished with 7.

The score doesn't even begin to describe how ugly this game was if you were a WARHAWK fan.  Point outplayed us in every way imaginable.

I noticed that Davis got his second foul relatively early in the second half (7 mins or so left).  Was this part of the ugliness, or did it start even before that?

Stout pulled out a nice win last night and I think Eddie might have figured it out.  There was no 5 in 5 out all night.  :)  Looking at the box score only 7 players on stout got more the 10 minutes with Hostetter playing 37, Buck playing 32, and Olsen playing 31.  Eddie let his main guys play and you could see it on the floor the extra pass was being made all night.  I think if Eddie sticks with this shorter rotation Stout can at least keep games competitive the rest of the year.

Having Davis on the bench with foul trouble certainly didn't help matters any.  Point's lead went from 9 to 20 in the last 8 minutes of the half.  But you could already see it brewing.  Davis has been averaging just over 34 minutes a game, last night he played 21.  You have to give Point credit because they did a good job of defending him with double and even triple teaming.

I don't remember seeing a SP-WW game that was that one-sided and seemingly uncontested ever. Going back to 1991 the previous largest margin of victory at WW was 79-59 in 2004. Back in 1999 Point beat a WW team that finished the WIAC season at 5-11 at SP 94-51. I don't remember that one, but the game last night certainly could have reached that level if not for WW outscoring Point's subs 23-11 in the last 6 minutes. I'm so used to seeing WW answer Point basket for basket that I expected them to rally when Point stretched the lead to 16-11. Point just turned up the D and never let WW get an offensive rhythm going the rest of the game. I thought we would be in trouble with Hoelzel out sick and Dan T picking up two quick fouls, but the defense was great. It certainly seemed that Point had more than the 10 steals the box score gave them credit for.

My mind immediately went to the 2004 matchup as well... and also to the second matchup in 2003 (in SP).

In 04, we were two games behind WW and came out with a statement game and one that avenged a previous loss to the Warhawks... Whitewater would then drop 2 of their last 3 after that game (so, 3 of their last 4) and wound up in a second place tie.  SP dropped the regular season finale at home to Superior in the year the RF won the conference... but Point regrouped and won the conference tourney and their first national championship.

In 03, also avenging a previous loss, SP beat Whitewater at home by 18 in a game where Nick Bennett got hurt in the pre-game walk-through... Nick came down awkwardly on a jumpshot and his back went out.  Brian Bauer stepped in and scored 15 points.

There have been so many great Point/WW battles over the last decade.  What stands out to me with both of these victories is that they avenged previous losses and really showed how SP improved as the year went on.

This year, SP finished the regular season sweep... in many respects avenging last year's reg season sweep by the Warhawks.  It's certainly possible that they may meet in the conference tournament like last year... and the tables may be turned!

Point may have credited with only 10 steals, but Whitewater was charged with 18 turnovers.

That's not unheard of...  If WW travels or throws the ball out of bounds, it's a turnover but doesn't lead directly to steals.

Now, if Point had 18 steals and WW has just 10 TO's... then somehting fishy would be going on...    ::)

Greek Tragedy

I was just pointing out to frodo that Whitewater had 18 turnovers because he thought Point had more than 10 steals.  Maybe he thought some of those turnovers were steals.  That's all.  :P

This board will never be mistaken for the CCIW board.  We seem to have a lot of lurkers.  I tried to start up a conversation with my midseason awards and usually someone follows suit.  Not one person did and no one even argued my picks, aside from you giving me a little jab about having no Pointers!  Though no one really responds to posts, we definitely aren't talking to ourselves.  There are plenty of readers.  >:( ;D :D ;)

I've been gone the past week and a half to Orlando for a fastpitch tourney, If I was online I certainly would have joined in on that conversation....or should I say I would have contributed to starting the conversation.

Just saw a piece on Jake Smith:

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/189771/group/Sports/

He's really close to UW Super's all-time scoring list... he could get it on Saturday at Stevens Point.

Tony Mane became LaX's all-time leading scorer earlier this year.  That's gotta be the first time that the two all-time leading scorers clinched the record in the same year (excepting, of course, for Dirk Bigsby and Cornelius Cooper in 1901, etc...)

OS, I don't post all that much here because I don't keep up with the league like a lot of you do.

But I do enjoy reading the posts, and I'll chip in when I have something to say!

Point played so well and there are more Point posters here than any other I thought one of you would probably post something.  From our standpoint there really wasn't much positive to say and, honestly, I'd just as soon forget the whole thing.  I think I pretty well summed it up in a couple of sentences.

Stoutguy, will you be making the trek down to WHITEWATER Saturday afternoon?  If so I might be able to get you a bottle of water.  ;)
