I have a feeling Palmer's young daughter also played a role.

Anyone know what happened to Paul Franklin?  Played at EC last year, not on roster this year.

ECbadger52

I know EC had a couple guys leave the team a few practices in (not sure about Franklin though) Lendl the transfer from Bemedji St. apparently left after a few practices, and I do not see D'voidis (sp?) Bowman listed on the roster any more he had came in from some Ohio school. I believe his wife may work for the university

Purple won the annual Pointer Purple-Gold game tonight. Dan Tillema scored 21 and Gio 11 for purple. Kacala and Ryf played well for them also. Tyler Tillema led gold with 16, I believe JB got about 12 pts, 8 boards and 6 fouls to his stat line. Hass played well as did Forsythe and Ritchay (2-treys). Ziemer had a very nondescript game. Tyler tweaked his ankle (same one he hurt in the scrimmage) and ended up on the bench at the 8 min mark of the 2nd half with an ice-pack on it. Dan also tweaked either his ankle or knee in a fall midway through the 2nd and was favoring it the rest of the night. Adam Abbeglin was notably absent and his name was not on either roster tonight. No one I spoke with knew what was going on with him, but even Resch was there in street clothes (I'm guessing some type of injury is keeping him out), so that does not bode well for the young man.

Point opens the season next Tuesday at home against Lawrence, my guess for the starting 5 is Tillema, Tillema, Brezinski, Hass and Gio, with Ryf, Kacala and Parlow in the immediate rotation.

It sounds like it might be time for me to forget about Ziemer becoming a stud in the WIAC.  Also, that Abegglin news doesn't sound very positive.  I sure hope everything is fine and he's still playing as it seemed he really made some big strides since his freshman year.

The WARHAWKS scrimmaged Concordia - Wisconsin last night and won all three periods by 10-14 points.  There were a lot of new faces with names I am not yet familiar.  A few looked like they could contribute this year.  Chris Davis played well inside.  Cody Odegaard shot well from beyond the arc.  Luke Knoble looked improved.  Quardell Young, one new face I do know, looks like he is going to be a pretty decent point guard.

The WARHAWKS open their season November 18th playing Concordia - Illinois and Dominican in a tournament played at CU-I.

I don't know that I'd rule Ziemer out so quickly.   You have to remember that he hasn't played competitively for two years so it could take him a while to get back in the flow.  Though admittedly I thought the talk of him going D1 out of high school was kind of off the mark.  He's always struck me as a D3 level player.

I saw they released the WIAC All-Time Soccer team today in the womens category. The WIAC apparently is going to do this for every "championship" sport on a weekly basis. It got me thinking who would be on the mens basketball All-Time team...

As someone who is fairly new to the WIAC and now leaving the WIAC I figured I would yield you guys to make your selections.

(I dont know if this has been discussed yet or not, my apologies if it has).

We know a little bit more about Point, but what about the rest of the conference?  Have any scrimmages helped answer the following questions?

  • How will the new player(s) fit in at RF and WW?
  • Who will take Mane's shots at LaX?
Will UWEC play like Marquette did under Crean with Green in charge?  (lots of plays)
Is Cross at UW-P ready to take the next step to becoming a dominate big man?

Lots of questions--don't know if I can wait until the 15th for answers!

Those are tough questions at this point...!

I think that, as with last year, it's RF's conference to lose.  They managed to do so last year and I think, by the end of the year, teams like Point will really be playing well... but it really does draw into question the integration of Chris Palmer.  One would think that having additional skilled players on a team would be a positive thing, but there's always the chance of him not meshing well with the current team...

I really don't forsee that happening, though.  Why would you go to a school, for your senior year, if you didn't get along with the guys who were already there?

It should turn out to be an interesting year (like always!)

I love that RF is getting some publicity on these boards. I have been fighting for it for years, but how can you say it was our conference to lose last year...

First off, Point was the defending Nat'l Champs... Period.

Secondly, they've won the conference championship once in like 63 years. Nobody who ever has a history like that can be the team whos "conference title it is to lose"

Lastly, I still disagree with you on your word usage of "monumental collapse." If RF loses those four games spread across the season, no one says anything. Also, a thing that no one remembers, RF lost their toughness inside when U.T. Udo was ruled ineligible (apologies to Jake Voeltz, but its true). RF was never the same team on the interior after he was suspended.

Man, I am going to miss this!  :)

I think I was a bit unclear in my statement... I didn't mean in the preseason last year, I meant once the games started to be played... especially after RF beat Point (well, and everybody else) the first time around.

I can expound more on that later.

I have to believe there are a handful of guys that would be "locks" to make the team.  It would be interesting to know exactly how many players are going to make the squad.

Here is my "short" list of guys I believe will be on the squad:
Tim Dworak-Oshkosh
DJ Marsh-Oshkosh
Merrrill Brunson-Platteville
Jeff Skemp-Platteville
Rich Melzer-River Falls
Jason Kalsow-Stevens Point
Sherm Carstensen-Eau Claire
Joe Werner-La Crosse
James Stewart-Whitewater

If I'm not mistaken, each pf these guys were multiple time All American selections.  My only "issue" is that my selections cover a VERY short period of time, as they all played within the past 15 years.

Upon doing some research, guys I would add to above list:
Mike Ratliff-Eau Claire (3-Tme POY)
Gib Hinz-Eau Claire (2 Time POY)
Ralph Sims-Oshkosh (2 Time POY)
Terry Porter-Stevens Point (2 Time POY)
2008-09 and 2012-13 WIAC Fantasy League Champion

How far back to go? How about Nate DeLong, all time leading scorer for RF, who once scored 72 points vs. Winona in a 1949 game, and 56 vs.Marshall College of West Va.in the NAIA tourney in K.C., in either 1949 or '50, and averaged 29 per game his senor year? Or Roger Kuss, who was NAIA player of the year in 1953 and who averaged 38 points per game his senior year? He ended up the third leading scorer in Falcon history, after Melzer. I was privileged to watch both of them. Or Newman Benson, who played with DeLong, and who got a lengthy tryout with the Minneapolis Lakers, only to be drafted into military service before he could finish his tryout? He eventually coached the Falcons for a period of years in the 70's.

If you want to read more about those three players, and i'm sure you don't, read a book about River Falls during the period 1945 - 60, called "Kinnickinnic Years--River Falls in the Forties and Fifties," mostly written by Mark Wyman. I wrote a chapter in the book titled "The DeLong-Kuss Era." It's not selling like hotcakes, so I'm sure you could get a copy.
