It appears that the Stevens Point job has taken a new twist. Semling's interim tag might be shorter than expected. The job was recently posted on the NCAA website.

http://ncaa.thetask.com/market/view_full.php?id=30433

The ad states that application review will begin September 23rd and will be only open until filled.

This is a common tactic used by AD's that want to ensure an assistant getting the position. The pool of candidates will be much less given the time of year and the strong "interim" label given to Semling. What qualified coach is going to be applying for a new job when the school year is about to begin?

Greek Tragedy

In my opinion, I think Point would've struggled WITH Bennett coaching.  I think they'll be a middle-of-the-pack team.  They'll surprise some teams, possibly like Platteville or Oshkosh at home, but then maybe lose a game some feel they shouldn't, at Superior or River Falls, for example.  I think it'll be an up and down year.  It'll definitely have a little different feeling without Bennett there.  But, don't make too much of a big deal about the "new coach" thing.  Semling has been there for a couple of years now, so the current players know him.  It's not like they're bringing in some schmoe off the street that no one knows.  It'll be the same system with a familiar coach.  The talent level has dropped off, but there are good returning players and Bennett had kept up his recruiting.  The big question will be, IMO, is if supporting players like Krull and players who can come off the bench and provide a spark (Brian Bauer) can fill the big shoes and start and be the stars.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not "in the know" of the feeling of students or too many fans in the Point area.  I was raised in Point, but haven't lived there for over 10 years.  I get back to watch games, but I'm hardly in the mix! I know people who know people, so sometimes I just forward their information!  ???

I believe it was 3..maybe 4? years ago, when Oshkosh was preseason number 1 in the nation. Yes, they did finish 10-6 in the WIAC, and didn't meet expectations in the regular season. But hey, I believe they beat some team from Stevens Point, and Whitewater to go to the Elite 8 that year. But besides that, they were the "man" in the conference that year, due to the preseason ranking. So my bad on the confusion with my comment.

Also, I believe out of everyone on this board, I have probably done the most Whitewater bashing out of everyone. So yes, I do understand how Whitewater finds a way to blow it every year. So i really don't need a reminder about what they can, and don't do. (I'm from Fort Atkinson remember, 7 minutes away from UWW stomping ground, so I got a chance to read about there games all the time).

And about surprising teams...like Oshkosh and Platteville..doubt it. Well..maybe Platteville unless someone steps up and proves they can score. But cmon Old School, everyone here in O-town is itching for revenge at Point. For sure to be a great start to the WIAC conference season.

Though, again, these are just my opinions with out real, hardcore facts behind them. So yeah, you are right..this is all talk right now. But im just going to remind you, that this time, there is Kaslow or Bennett to save you from Capelle and Gibson ;)

We've done six years of polls and UW-Oshkosh has never been the preseason No. 1.

Platteville and Stevens Point, yes.

Mr. Downtown, you might want to get your facts straight before you talk about a team being "the man."  UWSP won conference running away in '02-'03, with a record of 14-2, winning the league by 3 games.  And sure, Oshkosh may have been the preseason #4 pick, but according to that preseason ranking, they should have ENDED as the #4 team in the country... they didn't, they lost in the elite 8.  Heck, they weren't even the best team in the conference, or the second best team.  They were 4 games behind Point, and even though they made it farther than Point in the NCAA's, Point's opponent still made it farther (so  :P).

Any way you slice it, you really don't have history (at least recent history) on your side.  Point has dominated the conference the last three seasons.  Any team that would step up to challenge them in that would be travelling on uncharted ground.

Gosh I wish the season started sooner.

Greek Tragedy

Point Special,

We're on the same team, but Point hardly dominated the last three seasons.  In fact, they were seeded #1 in the conference tourney just once in that time.  Platteville was seeded #1 last year (tied for conference) and River Falls was 1st the year before, with us tied for 2nd with Whitewater...but I digress.

I'm not really here to bash anyone.  If Point doesn't make the NCAA tourney, I immediately become a WIAC fan, so I'm glad Oshkosh made it to the Elite 8 that year and even though I hated Eau Claire beating us in the Elite 8 in Buena Vista, I was rooting for them in the Final Four.

"But cmon Old School, everyone here in O-town is itching for revenge at Point."

All because they are itching for revenge doesn't mean they're going to win!  :o

The WARHAWKS[/color] have lost two games that were scheduled in New Orleans in late December.   The team is exploring it's options, which at this late date are pretty limited.

True Basketball Fan

I'm sure they'll find somebody to play them.  It may not be desirable, but amazingly there are still teams that haven't filled their schedule yet.  It is a minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but isn't it unbelievable the lasting effects a hurricane can have on EVERYTHING!!!!  That's scary........  :o

titan2000

Maybe the Whitewater team could travel to the Delta and volunteer the time they would have spent playing basketball helping people rebuild or clean up or whatever they could do to help.

Basketball is not that important.   :-[

Just to clarify a point, I certainly never meant to imply in any way, shape, fashion or form that the loss of two games was in any way anything more than a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of a hurricane.

Not a bad idea 2K.

True Basketball Fan

Don't worry warhawk man.  I've thought about what all the sports teams at the colleges and universities are going to do because of this, and the effects it has on everybody else (a la UW Whitewater), whether great or small, significant or minor.  It's only natural for sports fans to at least spend a little time in thought about that.  Besides  there are people's lives that are shaped and built around sports, whether it be coaches, players, administrators, trainers, etc.  Those people's lives are greatly altered because of all this.

Nevertheless, I know everybody here is more concerned about the loss of life and devastation to a prominent region of the country.  I have no doubt about that.

Dear WIAC Board:

I am a very sensitive man.

My karma rating has dropped to -6.   I would really appreciate it if you could find it in your heart to improve my rating.  I believe I have been misunderstood.

Thanks for your consideration.

It's probably a dumb question, but I'm sure that I'm not the only one that wonders how the karma increases and decreases....Anybody?

warhawkguy

The karma points come from someone either smiting (-) or applauding (+) you.

I just smited you, yes, it was a dumb question  ;) ;), and you went to -4.  Then I felt guilty so I applauded your post and, for some reason, it went up two points to -2.
