UW-EC loses to North Park, IL, 54-52, after leading by 18 in first half. Defense was solid .. offense ?
Jordan Peterson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Blugolds (1-1) play Concordia (WI) this afternoon in the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Tournament. Concordia already has two WIAC "notches" on their belt, with W's at La Crosse Tuesday and at Platteville last night.

EDIT: Edgewood holds on for a 73-67 win. UWS came all the way back and tied it, but couldn't get over the hump.

UWRF comes back from a 6 point halftime deficit to beat Bethel 65-62.  Early in the second half they were down by as many as 9 before making their run. Manor and Guerin turned it on and were able to score consistently during the last 12 minutes.  Falcons went to a press that led to many turnovers and quick baskets.  Didn't see the first half but the announcers on the video said UWRF was down 11-0 at one point.  Berkhof really shortened the rotation in the second half and went with the starters and Ethan Thomforde as the only guy off the bench to get any significant minutes.

Falcons04

Box score is posted for UWRF.  Manor goes for 19 points, 11 rebs for his second consecutive double-double.  Guerin finishes with 14 and 9.  In addition to Thomforde's 19 minutes off the bench, freshman guard Taylor Peterson also played 17 minutes.  Chris Palmer only played 11 minutes and had 2 points.  Falcons host their only game of the first month of the season on Tuesday against St.  Thomas.

UWSP wins White Rose Classic in York, PA by beating the host Spartans 68-54. Tyler Tillema with 20 pts, 6 reb, 6 assists and Jordan Brezinski with 18 pts, 6 reb. Season leading scorer Dan Tillema scored 6 pts before fouling out in only 14 minutes of action, the second straight game he is DQ'd. NINETEEN turnovers!!  :o  For the season Point is averaging 18 per game.  The highest average in the previous ten years was the '02-03 squad which averaged 12 p/g. You won't win many games against the best teams in the WIAC (or anywhere else) with that kind of ball protection. After watching the past 3 games live and via streaming video, I'd estimate at least 20 of those 54 TO's were trying to force something that wasn't there  and about 10 were simply carelessness. More experience playing together should help, but even that '05-06 young team only averaged 10.5 pg.

The WARHAWKS trailed 8-6 with 16 minutes remaining in the first half when Chris Davis scored all 11 points in a 11-4 run and the WARHAWKS never trailed again on the way to a 31-21 lead at halftime and a 71-44 win over Dominican University.  Davis led all scorers with 20 points and reserve Justin Scanlan added 10 points.  The WARHAWKS, led by Davis and Quardell Young with 7 apiece, out rebounded DU 37-23.  Davis also led the WARHAWKS with 4 assists. WW shot 57.7% from the field.

The two teams combined to shoot just 18 total free throws, nine apiece.

Darius Nelson had 13 points to lead DU.

I agree that 19 is a ton... and averaging 18 is a ton.  But yesterday's game was pretty insane.  Point had... 8? 9? fouls called on them on their own offensive end, split between charge calls and illegal screen calls.

I'll have to look back at the box score, but Dan Tillema probably had at least 3 fouls on the offensive end.  He was basically ineffective... due to the fact that he couldn't get in a rhythm because he kept getting called for fouls and ended up back on the bench.

So much of his game is predicated on drawing contact.  York was a pretty veteran team so perhaps they were funneling well to guys ready to take charges... but I think that SP got hosed on a bunch of those calls.  That came would have been called drastically differently in Wisconsin.  And it was amazing how, in the second half, when there were a couple of blocking calls that were made on York (that were, genuinely blocks) how the commentators for York complained about it.

I think that York is a pretty good team... the region they play in isn't as tough as the one SP plays in, but they're still a pretty balanced, veteran team.  I wouldn't be surprised if they had a good season this year.  But they didn't seem too prepared to play a physical game, which Point DID seem much more prepared for.

It almost ultimately cost Point the game when it was called as close as it was... but SP's success on the free throw line sealed it for 'em.

I just checked... there were 8 offensive foul/turnovers for the game yesterday.  Tyler, Dan, and Alex Richard each had 2 apiece by my count.

Inconsistent play and a high turn-over ratio are signs of a young team or one with an influx of new players.  We have both.  This will likely be the "new normal" as this team gets more experience together.

I agree that inconsistency and a high # of turnovers are a sign of a young team... but look at the STATS across the board.
If you do a comparison to other teams from the Semling era, only last year's team (who led the nation in field goal %) had a better shooting percentage.

The closest team in terms of youth to this year's team was the the 17-10 team from 05-06.  But what people fail to realize is that this was Semling's first year as a head coach as well.  There were issues in the non-conference (which is a very rare thing for UWSP) but that was because teams played different styles and the SP team wasn't able to adjust.  They also lost to a Midamerican Nazarene team that would go on the next year to win the NAIA D-II National Championship.

Anyway, though... the team is shooting 52.9% from 3 and 80.8% from the FT line.  They've held two of their three opponents under 60 points and they've had contributions from a bunch of different players.

I don't think, however, that they're going to settle for this.  This team is going to grow as a team... it's an attribute of UWSP teams because the coaches are teachers of the game.  The players will gel and get better as individuals and learn how to play with each other and the WIAC will help be a sort of trial by fire.

The WARHAWKS opened the game with a 17-0 run and easily defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 84-61.  The lead grew to a high of 32 points, 66-34, in the second half when WL had a 13-0 run to close within 19 points, 66-47 but that is as close as it would get the rest of the way.

Chris Davis led three WARHAWKS to score in double figures with 23 points.  Cody Odegaard added 15, including 3 three-pointers, and Luke Knoble continued playing well with 14 points.

The WARHAWKS will face stiffer competition Sunday when they travel to Minneapolis to take on Hamline.

Falcons04

Falcons played well in a very physical 79-64 win over St. Thomas tonight.  They were paced by Shane Manor's 22 points (on 10/11 shooting) and Wade Guerin's 14 points (on 6/7 shooting) and 7 rebounds.  Shane was able to make plays around the rim and was clearly the best athlete on the floor tonight.  The game was back and forth for most of the first half and the early second, until UWRF made a run and pulled away.  As a team UWRF shot almost 60% for the game.  UST came out pressing and Brian Kimble did a good job handling the pressure and turning it into some easy looks for Manor and others.  Chris Palmer really contributed in 22 minutes off the bench with 11 points and 6 rebounds, along with toughness on the glass.  I was really impressed with the overall energy the Falcons had tonight, especially compared to their games in Bethel over the weekend.

The player that stood out for UST was Tommy Hannon (19 pts, 6 rebs in 27 minutes), who scored with a variety moves down low and also hit some mid range shots.  Once UWRF was able to slow him down, they were able to extend the lead in the second half.  I didn't know many of the players they lost after last year, but they seemed undersized a bit and weren't able to slow UWRF down.

I think this was the UWRF team we expected to see at the start of the year, although I'd be interested to hear from the MIACers on how good this UST team really is.

Point jumped out to a 38-24 halftime lead while hitting 6/8 3 pointers... but they shot just 2/17 in the second half (with one of those being a 3 with about 10 seconds left in the game) along with 12 free throws to lose 60-55 to St. Johns.

The Johnnies hit 7/10 3's in the second half.
