Just took a glance at the Top 25 poll that was released today and was surprised to see the Falcons didn't even receive a vote after beating Point at home.  I know they had a less than impressive performance at WW on Saturday, but their only 2 losses to true NCAA D3 opponents came to teams currently ranked #18 and #9.  I don't have a feel for many teams outside of the WIAC and maybe the MIAC, so I have a limited perspective, but with two high profile wins (UST and Point) it seems strange that they couldn't at least get a few votes.

I echo Fred's comments regarding Kimble.  He is incredibly athletic and is major quick.  He had a couple of end to end baskets last night that were really something.  Manor is also a very good player.  But the night last night belonged to Chris Davis.  Playing just the first six minutes of the first half due to foul trouble Davis had 11 points and despite the long layoff and suffering a bruised knee that cost him court time in the second half the senior big stayed hot and wasn't going to be denied.

The WARHAWKS handed the Falcons their first conference loss 84-70.

Starting the game with a three-pointer Davis scored five of the WARHAWKS first seven points and they took the lead from start to finish.  The lead grew to double figures and reached a high of fourteen during the first half.  River Falls whittled the lead down single digits with slightly less than three and half minutes remaining before the half ended with the WARHAWKS up eight 34-26.  While the WARHAWKS played fourteen minutes of the half without Davis the Falcons played half of the half without Manor who also had foul problems.  The Falcons closed to within seven points twice in the second half.  The second time was with slightly less than fourteen minutes remaining 44-37 but the WARHAWKS scored the next ten points.  The WARHAWKS largest lead was eighteen points, 65-47, at the nine minute mark.  River Falls cut it in half 71-62 with a little over four minutes remaining but a three-pointer from Eric Bryson pushed back into double figures where it remained for the rest of the game.

Davis finished the game with 31 points going 10-13 from the floor including 6-8 from beyond the arc in 23 minutes. His efficiency rating was +36.  Luke Noble led the WARHAWKS on the boards with a game high 9 rebounds and added 16 points.  As a team the WARHAWKS equaled River Falls 31 rebounds.  Quardell Young scored in double figures with 12 points and had a team high 5 assists.

Kimble led three Falcons in double figures with 19.  Manor added 16 and Ollie White 12.

The WARHAWKS out shot the Falcons 53% to 47%.  Each team made 27 baskets but the WARHAWKS sank 9 three-pointers to 5 for the Falcons and outscored the Falcons 21 to 11 from the free throw line.  It was a very physical game.

Stevens Point takes care of Stout tonight.

Stout kept it within 10 for most of the game and played tough. It was a slower paced game for the most part with a few stand up plays. Stevens Point doesnt look anything like it has in the past, but will still be Point and compete in every game and win most. Tyler Tillma played a solid game and Giordana hit a few clutch shots and free throws in the second half. Dan struggled and eventually fouled out with about 2 min left in the game. Tyler is Points go to guy and does everything for that team; he is going to be tough. Stout adds to its problems and looks like Steven Pax will more than likely miss the rest of the season with ANOTHER ACL tear. This is not for sure but after talking with him after the game it is probable. Oman had a lot of high points and is a tought tough player to stop when he wants to get to the rim, but being the ONLY scoring option on the team right now may start to cause problems for him (but lets hope not  :)). Stout hosts Oshkosh at home this weekend which is a good opportunity to get their first win, but with only 10 or so guys on the bench...... it might not be easy.

On a side note....... Point is 5-1 in conference play but with most teams in the conference dont look anything like they have in the past. Oman dropped 23 (most in the second half) and this just goes to show how important Nick Krull was to that team. Having a shut down defender like Krull against an Oman, Mane, Smith, Hostetter, or any other "big time" scorer is a game changer. Point doesnt have that defender anymore and they didnt seem to have a high octane offense to offset it. With that said it is a "down" season I suppose and we will see what happens if any of your WIAC teams get to play some big time schools in the NCAA's.

What happened to Ciolkosz or Ragland for Stout?  Grades?  Quit?  Seems like Stout could have some firepower if all 3 were playing, and all are young too.

Sounded like Point struggled and was pretty sluggish.  Perhaps they thought Stout wouldn't put up much of a fight.  They did!  Stout out-rebounded Point tonight, an unfortunate trend for Point.  IMO this is an issue the coaches must address.  Richards is obviously not the answer.  He continues to be a non-factor who is not any kind of offensive threat, the best defender and is truly undersized.  There are three or four people on the bench at 6'6"+ who should be rotated in - who could do the same or better.  This would not only give us better size and more bench experience but would give a breather to the starters.  We can't continue to ignore this glaring weakness.  Nice game by T.  Dan seemed to push a little again.  But all said and done ... a win on the road is always a good thing.  Go Point!

Ragland is done due to grades.

Ciolkosz is suspended for 6 more games I think.

RF got down early against LAX but led by 14 at the half and cruised in the second half to win 77-59.  Manor and Guerin each with 16, and reserve Taylor Peterson added 14 points in 23 solid minutes.  After coming out playing lights out defense, LAX struggled to keep up with RF pushing the ball and it led to easy baskets.  Brian Kimble is really playing well right now and makes it very tough on the defense to contain RF.  He had his third 8 assist game of the year to go with 8 points and 6 rebs.  LAX didn't look sharp on offense, but they are very young.  Jack Taylor was impressive in stretches and hit some tough outside shots.  The rebounding margin wasn't quite as wide as last Wednesday against Point, but RF outrebouds LAX 40-27.........10 offensive rebounds in 28 chances.

Point just looked bad tonight... some of that was certainly due to Stout (I think Stout really outhustled SP tonight) but other things were due to Point not being smart.

Danny T didn't have a great game... it looked like he was trying to distribute more than actively score in the first half... but then he got in foul trouble and didn't really ever get on track.

Tyler had another good game tonight... he really has a nose for drawing contact and getting fouled, though of his 4 fouls, at least two of them were charges.

Ziemer played 18 minutes tonight... far more than in any other games.  In fact, he'd only appeared in 3 games earlier this year.  Richard, on the other hand, played just 4... other than Saturday's game where he played 5, he'd actually averaged double digit minutes throughout the year.  I think the definite upside to Richard is that he's strong... that's the case with Ritchay and with Ryf too and that's part of the reason why they've gotten more playing time.

Just because a guy is 6'6" doesn't mean that he's ready to play college basketball... this is coming from a 6'9" guy who played college basketball.  Big guys tend to need some time to grow into their bodies and if they're going against an upperclassman with a chiseled body, they're going to be in trouble.  It is pretty rare that a freshman can come in and really contribute... but we're at about halfway through the year.  Everybody has had a few months to get used to the system and things may just start to click... and so we may see some guys that we haven't seen too much thus far and guys who had gotten an opportunity might see their time decrease.

I think that the game against RF might have been a tipping point... RF really pounded SP and some changes might have been made because of it, who knows.

I don't think that the performances against EC and Stout were great ones... but they're wins... I just don't know that Point has made the advances that they'll need to to succeed this year.

But you never know.  They have led at halftime in each and every game this year... and they've had several second halves that left something to be desired.

Ya know, the comment has been made that Point hasn't made too many adjustments at halftime... I think they have, but they haven't been positive adjustments.  In the Edgewood game, they had a sizable lead at the half... and proceeded to turn the ball over on the first NINE possessions.

I wonder if they're trying to do too much coming out of the half with a lead.  It has happened a few times over the years too... really strange for a team that has had as much success at times to be that bad at other times.

It's hard, though... with the turnover from the roster from last year, there were SO many players who basically had to learn from scratch.  If you looked at it on paper, I think that you'd be happy to be tied for the conference lead at 5-1 with two to play in the first half of the conference season and 11-3 with 3 close losses on the road.

Do they need to get better?  Sure.  But who would want to be playing their best basketball in the beginning of the year and get worse?  That's not how Point has ever been... they're built to peak in February and March.  I just hope that the players' bodies are able to hold up, given the high number of minutes that the starters are playing.

The WARHAWKS won a close one against Platteville last night 75-70.  The first half was a see-saw affair with three ties and eleven lead changes.  The WARHAWKS largest lead was just two points and Platteville's was six, 22-16, at the ten minute mark.  After the WARHAWKS regained a one point lead with eight minutes remaining Platteville regained the lead and built it to five points before the WARHAWKS narrowed the gap to a pair, 36-34, when the half ended.  As the score suggests the first half was played closely.  The WARHAWKS had scored one more basket than Platteville but the Pioneers had one more three-pointer and three more  free throws.  Tough interior defense by the Pioneers held Chris Davis to just four points but Eric Bryson, Luke Noble and Quardell Young scored 10, 8 and 7 respectively.  Alex Edmunds, seeing his first playing time of the season chipped in with 5.  Platteville got 10 from Matt Weik, 8 from Brett Stangel and 7 from Rob Stallion.  The WARHAWKS started the second half with an 8-0 run and built the lead to 12 points, the largest lead by either team, 66-54 in the first thirteen and half minutes of the half.   That lead didn't last long though as the Pioneers answered with an 9-0 run of their own to pull within three and later to within a pair 72-70 with twenty three seconds remaining.  The WARHAWKS made 3 of 4 free throws while Platteville missed a pair of shots after that to finish the game.

Davis had a big second half finishing as the game's leading scorer with 23 points.  The senior center also finished with a game high 10 rebounds.  Young followed with 14 points while Bryson, Noble and Edmunds each added 10.  Alex Merg had a team high 3 assists.

Stangel led the Pioneers with 19 points and Weik finished with 13.  Eric Gerber had a team high 6 rebounds and a game high 7 assists.

The stats in this game were very close.  Each team shot 47% from the floor and each time pulled down 30 rebounds.  Platteville made two more three point baskets 9-7 and the WARHAWKS had two less turnovers 9-11.  Free throws were the difference.  The WARHAWKS went 18-23 from the line while the Pioneers shot only 9 making 7.
