Very tough loss for RF to swallow tonight as they fought back the entire second half to finally tie the game, but couldn't capitalize on their chances to take the lead.  This was the most physical game I've seen this year, and came down to the likely POY making a contested 15 foot turnaround with 3 seconds left.  RF goes 8/17 from the line............can't expect to win the close ones making less than 50% of your ft's.  WW was tough defensively and did the best job of any team I've seen of keeping RF in a half court game by preventing the fast breaks they have relied so heavily on.

It will be interesting to see if it comes down to SP @ RF next week as a sort of Pool C play-in game, with the loser moving into "bubble" territory.  Point has to beat Superior to get there, but the losses for both teams put some doubt on their tourney chances when it looked like we had 3near locks a week ago.

The 3 seed has done terribly in the WIAC tournament over the years... and it's even tougher now with the 6-team tournament b/c Point will have to beat a very capable Superior team, then drive almost to Minnesota on Friday... and even if they would win that, they've gotta drive all the way home and then back down to Whitewater on Sunday.

Whitewater is clearly in the drivers seat having the bye and home-court advantage.

WW 55 RF 53  FINAL

A Chris Davis jump shot basket with 2 sec remaining is the winning hoop for the Warhawks.

With EC's victory over SP, Warhawks are undisputed conference champions.

Yes sir!!! UWW does it again.

No way I thought UWW would an out-right championship when I woke up this morning.....I doubt many did.

Congrats to the 'Hawks

The Pointers had the most inopportune time to have a 23-game winning streak snapped against UWEC.. The last time the Blugolds had beaten Point was Feb. 7, 2001...
Ouch.

I, for one, will NEVER underestimate a Stevens Point team.

A lot of it may hinge on Tyler Tillema... he suited up but didn't play at all for Point.  That's 17 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, and better than a steal per game... in addition to his overall court leadership.

That's a huge contribution gone...

Yep.  I'm not sure at what point he got hurt against Stout but he played through it... may not have been 100% and he missed the FT that could have sealed it.

Depending what the injury was, that might not have been that surprising... radio guys said that it was his left hand that was heavily bandaged (and he's a lefty).

The injury occurred with about 5 minutes left in regulation vs Stout. He was mugged by two players  >:( and went down hard. He played thru it, but I hear he is likely done for the season with possible ligament damage.  :'( :'( :'(

That would be a double ouch for the Pointers, if Tillema is done... Are what may be speedbumps in the road down the stretch, with losses to UWEC and Stout, going to derail the Pointers, or can they use them as a wakeup call?...

I've got to think that if the Pointers can pick up their 20th win during the WIAC tournament, even if they lose one game thereafter, they will get a bid...

I was taking a look at the box score this morning for the RF/WW game. I was interested to see the score tied at 53 with 4:04 left. then both teams failed to score until Davis hit that shot with five seconds left. That four-minute dry spell to end the game must have drove fans and coaches nuts.

It drove me nuts listening on the radio.  I was thinking here we go Superior all over again.

Missed free throws (on both sides) were obviously an issue but the game changer was three point baskets.  WW: 6, RF: 3

It looks like Chris Davis will get Conference POTY, IMO.  Tyler Tillema's Pointers tanked the last two games with him missing out on the season finale in Eau Claire.  I don't Shane Manor did enough the last two games to warrant it either.  With Whitewater coming back to claim the title outright, I wouldn't disagree with Pat Miller getting the COTY.

stoutguy--I thought you died. Haven't seen your post for quite a while. Unfortunately, in-law complications and a 16 month old grandchild at the game prevented me from being a "show" instead of a no-show. Even the prospect of buying a beer for you and Peterson would not have been enough incentive to stay away, but I had a relative from WW with me too and a wife who encouraged me not to go to the "dark side." That's what wives are for, right?

Would like to have talked with Pat Bauscheldt, who did a good job refereeing in a tough atmosphere. Despite lots of cat calls from my section against the refs, they were able to handle it. There seemed to be a let-em-play philosophy operating, but despite that, both teams had 10 team fouls at the end of the second half.

That was the first good crowd we've had all year. Most of the time there's little enthusiasm, but the football team was all there in red and did a great job being a sixth man. The crowd actually bordered on being hostile with the booing of the Warhawks at the beginning of each half, and the fb guys getting on Davis and Young because he got no rim on his first shot, but nothing got out of hand. It was a tough atmosphere to play and referee in.

Davis is a great player, but appears at times to be out of shape. I thought it was a tactical mistake for RF not to try to steal/foul with 25 seconds left in order to put WW at the line and have enough time to get something done after free throws. But that did not happen and WW used up 20 seconds before they got the ball into Davis. There was  no time for a decent shot with 2.9 seconds left after Davis's bucket. It was a really great ball game and WW deserved the win.

I was taking a look at the box score this morning for the RF/WW game. I was interested to see the score tied at 53 with 4:04 left. then both teams failed to score until Davis hit that shot with five seconds left. That four-minute dry spell to end the game must have drove fans and coaches nuts.

It drove me nuts listening on the radio.  I was thinking here we go Superior all over again.

Missed free throws (on both sides) were obviously an issue but the game changer was three point baskets.  WW: 6, RF: 3

Amazing to me that there was a 4 minute dry spell.  Hardly noticed it.   No scoring but amazing intensity and drama.  I agree with Fredfalcon that Pat Bauchault  did a great job of officiating a very difficult game.  WW a very deserving champion.  All I ever hear around here is that Pat Miller just gets all the talent.  Guess what.  Any team that plays defense with that kind of intensity has a coach that deserves some credit.  The guy can coach and gets my vote for COY.

I would be surprised to see Point get passed the second round if they are lucky enough to get past Superior in the first. If Tyler doesnt play I dont think they have much of a chance unless Dan and a couple others are knocking down shots like crazy. Tyler controls the game for Point and is by far their most important player and Points defense isnt anything it has been in years past. I would like to see 3 WIAC teams get into the NCAA's but with them having to play each other again in the tournament we'll see what happens. Point obviously has the most work to do after back to back losses to unlikely competitors, Stout and Eau Claire.
