UWL adds some badly needed size to the roster with two transfers and a high school recruit. 6'9 SF Cale Zuiker has transferred from D1 Youngstown State, where he played sparingly as a freshman. The 190 pound Zuiker was named All-state at Marshfield High, and appears to be a bona-fide 3 pt threat. 6'7 PF-C Nick Romanowski has left UWP to join the Eagles, and will be joined by Wayzata MN recruit Chad Potas, who plays both the 4 and 5 slots. The young gentleman is 6'6. I look forward to watching them play for the Eagles.

I don't know anything about Potas, but Zuiker and Romanowski are some big time gets for the La Crosse program.  They may take a year to get acclimated but down the road will be a formidable front line.  I sure am glad Point loaded up on size this year too with what is coming into the WIAC in this year's recruiting classes.
Why would Zuiker take any more time than then say Heuer to get acclimated?  Zuiker and Heuer both are big guys who have a tendency to drift outside - will be interesting to see who asserts themselves as a legitimate inside post threat!

How about the fact that Heuer has two more years of college basketball practice experience over Zuiker.  Add in the fact that Heuer practiced against more talented players day in and day out at Green Bay then Zuiker did at Youngstown St.

I wasn't starting a debate, I am thoroughly impressed La Crosse got these two bigs.

Among D1 teams, UW-Green Bay (15-15) was ranked #163 in last season's Massey Ratings. Youngstown State (16-15) was ranked #171. The two teams finished in a sixth-place tie in the Horizon League at 10-8. The difference seems pretty negligible to me.

When UWGB and YSU met last January in Youngstown, the Penguins crushed UWGB, 77-47. (Heuer saw four minutes of action and got a steal; Zuiker got two minutes and had straight goose-eggs across his stat line.) The Phoenix won the rematch in February, 71-65, in Green Bay. Neither future WIACer saw action in that one.

I'm not debating either ... other comments on this board regarding Heuer assumes for the most part he's a given to come in a play a lot for the Pointers.  I really do not see much difference between him and Zuiker.

I would also think that Zuiker given less depth around him than Heuer may actually play more for UWL than Heuer does for UWSP.

Lastly in my experience most transfers don't sit much.

I think Heuer's need to step in and play right away is due to need on Point's part. That's not to say that UWL won't have the same need as well, but stories have been posted about Heuer in particular, basically saying that he'll step right in and play.

We haven't seen the same about Zuiker, though it certainly could be true. The UWL program hasn't been in the limelight as much as the UWSP program, so less has been written about 'em (or at least less has been shared).

That's a fair question.....  Many posters thought it was a HUGE deal that the Pointers got a D1 transfer in Heuer, but then to have a Pointer backer say "They may take a year to get acclimated" in regards to Zuiker seems a bit hypocritical.

I look for both guys (Heuer and Zuiker) to have an immediate impact in the WIAC....

There may be some hopes built in to both of those sentiments... (that Heuer can help right away and that Zuiker takes a year)

I think UWL sizing up could be significant.

Sophomore guard Jack Taylor is leaving the UWL program to play for Grinnell of Iowa. As a freshman, he averaged 7 pts a game in 13.4 mins of action. He hit 39.4 % of his 3 pt shots. Too bad. He looked to be a real contributor for years to come.

Brian, any insight into the reason Taylor is transferring?  Is he an Iowa native or maybe looking for a specific major not offered at LaCrosse?  It just seems kind of odd that a player who saw that much playing time as a freshman in the WIAC would leave for Grinnell.  No offense intended towards Grinnell it may be fine academic institution and I can see why playing in their system would be attractive to some.  It just seems like an odd move to me.

BW; Jack Taylor is a local (Black River Falls) player and  had made the all area team which was named by the La Crosse Tribune. I have no information viv a vis his reason for leaving.

It's more than a "fine academic institution." Grinnell is one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the entire country. No offense to UWL, but the cachet of a degree from Grinnell is dramatically higher than that of a degree from UWL.

Obviously I don't much about Grinnell.  I did drive through the campus once out of curiosity when I was in Iowa.   and happened to see the sign on the freeway.

Good luck to him.

With that many minutes at Grinnell, he could average 20 pts a game!

Perhaps the simple explanation for the transfer to Grinnell is the fact that the player in question lofted 63.9% of his shots from beyond the arc last season, and that of his successful FGs, 60.9% were 3s.

With 18 assists on the season, its a good bet he isn't transferring to become the Pioneers offensive distributor, and going from a state school to a private institution certainly isn't a cost saving measure.
