UW-W wins Carthage tournament with a 74-69 win over Carthage.  UW-W held a 39-24 lead at the half. Carthage made a few runs to tighten the game, but the Hawks held on for the win.  Eric Bryson had 19 and KJ Evans had 15 to pace UW-W.

Thanks Bleed... Just looked at the UW-W roster... A lot of starters returning next year..

The WARHAWKS scored first and other than a pair of ties at 6-6 and 8-8 led throughout tonight's game with Carthage. The lead reached a high of 15 points at the half, 39-24.  The WARHAWKS maintained a lead though the second half though it was in single digits and dropped to a low of two points during the final nine minutes of the game.  The final was 71-65.

The WARHAWKS shot 58% on the evening.  Eric Bryson finished with a game high 19 points including 5 of 6 three throws in the final fourteen seconds.  KJ Evans added 15 points and Quardell Young had his third consecutive double figure scoring with 11 points.  Luke Knoble had a team high 5 rebounds.  As has been the case with the WARHAWKS on other occasions free throws played a significant role in the outcome.  The WARHAWKS made 25 baskets including 4 three-pointers while Carthage had 25 with 5 three pointers.  However the WARHAWKS were 18-26 from the free throw line while Carthage was 10-12.

With Friday's win over Aurora the WARHAWKS go to 3-0 on the season with the next game scheduled against 8th ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington.

02, Knoble struggled tonight but played relatively well against Beloit (14 points, 7 rebounds) and Aurora (10 points, 6 rebounds).

First day of the Turkey Shootout was completed with a U of Dubuque win over Clarke University and Stout dismantling Northland College by about 40.

Hard to take anything from the game last night with Stout jumping out to a 14-0 lead and a 58-12 halftime lead. Northland did much better in the second half although it is extremely difficult to stay motivated as a player when you can score at will and make a stop on defense with little effort. Oman with a season low 3 shot attempts (4 pts), but a career high 6 assists. Jarvis Ragland ended with 18 points (all layups and free throws) along with a monsterous dunk over a poor Northland gaurd trying to take a charge. Chris Hortman lead the team with 20 points off the bench. Not much to write about on Northlands side of the game.....

I am interested to see how Stout's chemistry is going to be come WIAC play. Chris Hortman is averaging only 19 minutes a game and shooting almost 15 times a game while Oman is playing about 25 minutes a game and putting up 13-14 shots a game. Hortman is a very athletic gaurd that can score and crash the boards, but he scores on his own page outside the offense and is averaging only 1 assist per game. Lets see what happens when the competition is upped a little bit.......

UW-Platteville knocked off Wartburg 68-51 to claim the UW-P Thanksgiving classic championship.  The Pioneers jumped out to a 19-7 lead and never let Wartburg get any closer then 9 the rest of the way.  Pioneers were led by Chas Cross who had 17 and tournament MVP Rob Stallion who had 12.  Eric Gerber only had 4 points but chipped in with 6 rebounds and 7 assists.  UW-Platteville travels to Augustana on Tuesday.

La Crosse spotted Luther (IA) a 35-31 halftime lead, but put the defensive clamps on the Norse in the second half. This, combined with excellent free throw shooting (17-19) gave the Eagles a 69-58 win tonight at Mitchell Hall. I have seen all 4 Eagle games this season, and the previously unbeaten Luther team was the best of the opponents. La Crosse struggled with the 6'9 center, but used balanced scoring to take the win. I suspect La Crosse will be 5-0 when they invade Zorn Arena next Saturday.

Correction:  It was David Berthene who hit the 3 w/2 secs. left in regulation to tie the game, put the Falcons in o.t.

UW-Stout wins by 10 (61-51) against Dubuque to capture their home Thanksgiving Tournament championship. Stout jumped out to an early lead and controlled the first 6 minutes of the game. Dubuque battled back and went into halftime with a 31-30 lead. Stout came out of the locker room ready to go and started with a 9-2 and took the lead and they wouldnt give it back. Dubuque had some good size down low, but very sketchy gaurd play. Stout looked solid for a majority of the game, they just dont seem comfortable with each other offensively yet.

Aaron Jenny had the best statistically with 15 points (on 7-12 shooting) and 8 rebounds. Oman had another "sub-par" night with 10 points (on only 7 attempts) and 5 boards. Hortman continued his glass cleaning with a team high 9 boards with 7 points on 2 of 8 shooting.

After only 2 competitive games for the Blue Devils (Gustaves and Dubuque) it is beginning to look like they are either going to be a better balanced scoring team this year or it is going to be a battle for shot attempts (depending on the ego of players). Tonight the shot attempts were spread out amongst 4 players with 12 attempts, 7, 8, and 9. Of course only getting 50 shots up as a team isnt anything to boast about either, especially when you only make 21 of those. I am still a little confused and excited to see how this season turns out for the players of the Blue Devils with the WIAC right around the corner.

Hopefully my first round pick gets back to how he ended the year last year  ::)

I was looking at the box score for UWSP's game at Buena Vista last night...

BV had 22 assists last night on 25 field goals. That's just about as high a percentage as I've ever seen.

Ultimately, Point won last night because they shot a higher percentage (53.6%) and didn't turn the ball over (8 turnovers).  They overcame a better shooting night from deep (BV was 8/18 from 3. Point was 6/16), but Point had 5 more shots and made 5 more baskets than BV.

Also, I wasn't quite sure what sort of a shooting team that Point would be this year. Last year, Point shot 47.2% from the field, 52.1% from 2 and 37.8% from 3. This year, Point is shooting 50.5% from the field, 54.2% from 2 and 43.6% from 3.

Across the board, they're better shooting.

Now, of course, this is after 4 games, while last year was over 28... but the initial returns are pretty darn good.

One other little tidbit.

Point's defense has been a work in progress this season... it's not quite to the standard that we've been used to the last several seasons.

I did a quick calculation of the defensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions). Generally, you want to be above 100 offensively and hold your opponent below 100 defensively.

Well, against St. Olaf a week ago last Saturday (that Point won 82-81 on a Joe Ritchay 3 with 1.7 seconds left), Point's defensive efficiency was 123.38. So, in other words, if STO had been given 100 possessions in the game, they would have scored about 123 points. As it was, they only had about 65 possessions... so they scored 81.

Fast forward to last Tuesday's game against St. John. Point won this game 82-52, but led by as many as 44 in the second half with about 5 minutes to go. Even despite the run to end the game by SJU, Point's defensive efficiency was 72.10. As it happened, there were actually MORE possessions for St John... 72.13, but they scored 29 fewer points. This was effectively about 50 points per 100 possessions BETTER defensively. That's an astronomical difference from one game to the next!
