There probably will not be be a better 3 pt. shooting exhibition this season than Cory Nickel (no 5, of course) put on today vs. RF:  8/14. It was not  so much that RF did not cover him as it was that he hit 25-30 foot shots. It's got to be a career performance for him. Congrats.

Oshkosh had a 6-8" player a few years ago who hit 8 threes vs RF, but I forget his name. I don't think anyone in the conference has ever hit 9 threes in a conference game, but then it's a memory thing i'm going with.

MESSAGE TO RECRUITS:  IN DOUBT? ENROLL AT STOUT. DON'T CARE? GO TO EAU CLAIRE. AT A LOSS? TRY LACROSSE. FEELIN' OUTTA JOINT? YOUR PLACE IS POINT. DON'T LIKE THE REST? DO WHAT'S BEST!

GOT BALLS? PLAY FOR THE FALLS!

After 2 or 3 games, way too early to make a statement like this (but I'll make it anyway) it seems that Stout may be the most under-rated team in the conference, and RF the most over-rated.

Point tops a good Augie team 67-59.  This was their first loss.  They beat NATHCON South favorite Aurora, MWC favorite St. Norbert and also Oshkosh and Platteville.

Heuer had 20 pts and 6 reb.

Tillema with 15 pts, 7 boards and 7 dimes.

Hass with 13.

Point forced 17 TOs and coughed it up just 7 times.

Very solid win after being behind at the break, 28-25.

Pretty sure Pete Rortvedt nailed 9 for the conference record early in his career.

Actually, it was Josh Iserloth from UWSP who went 8/8 from 3 in 01-02. Box Score. He scored 40 points on 14/18 shooting and only shot 5 free throws... now THAT'S efficiency!  That was the honest to goodness best shooting night I've ever seen in person. Ron Nolting went 4/6 from 3 as well.

Iserloth went for 35 in 20 minutes against Coe the next season on 12/16 shooting. He had the ability to be very, very good! Box Score

Pete Rortvedt hit 9/11 3's in a WIAC tournament game in 05-06. Box Score. That was literally the only positive from that game... it was just a bad over-all game otherwise. Luckily Point came out with the win, but it was UGLY (the teams combined to shoot 33/51 from the FT line, turned it over a combined 33 times, and both teams gave up at least 15 offensive rebounds.

In terms of the conference, there have been numerous 9 3-pointer games, two 10 3-pointer games and a 12 3-pointer game. Here's the WIAC record book. Link

And that concludes your WIAC history lesson for the day.   ;D   :-X

Point turned up the intensity in the second half to get by Augustana 67-59. The first half was a back and forth affair with Point settling for too many outside shots and Augie working inside and outworking Point as well.

Point did a better job going inside to Heuer in the second half and Augie had no answer for that. They did a nice job shoving Tillema around most of the night and as a result, some of his shots were off balance and out of his normal range. The Vikings shot very well in the first half but better defensive intensity by Point after the break was key to the win. Refs were inconsistent both ways. Augie Coach Grey Giovanine was as animated as ever, but not as loud or profane as last year in Rock Island. Very physical game as a tune up for Wednesday in Whitewater.

I'm not going to say that I thought Stout would be this good so far and River Falls would be this bad so far.  But, Stout did return FOUR starters, while River Falls LOST four starters.

JG--I sit corrected!

GT--That's why, after I saw that RF was predicted by sports info people to finish 5th, I posted that they were over-rated. Then, after a decent first 5 games when they went 3-2, all away from home, I figured they might be better than I originally thought. Now, I'm back to where I was a few weeks ago. They are very young on the perimeter, starting 2 sophomores and a junior most games, although yesterday all three seniors on the team started--probably their best opening lineup so far.

Fredfalcon.  I won't see your Falcons this week as I am doing the women's game at RF on Wed. but I will say that I am also very surprised at how well Stout men are playing.  Two wins on the road in this conference is a very good week.  Stout is playing defense this year and I think they can compete.

No. 6 Washington University lost yesterday-Point should move into the 6 slot making wednesday's Point-Whitewater game no. 2 vs. no. 6. Pointers seem to play well at Whitewater...both teams undefeated....should be good.

Pete Rortvedt, that guy could straight up ball.

Greek Tragedy

Pete was definitely had game. I wonder how much better he might have been had he not gotten injured during his junior year.  He obviously burst onto the scene his freshman year and I think he placed 2nd in POTY voting his soph. year.  But those last two years, even though he was always a threat, it seemed like he was just a little off that last year and a half or so.

Agreed with Rortvedt.  Iserloth was no slouch either.  Both were guys I was glad to see graduate.  :D

The BluGolds took a quick 6-0 lead and held it until KJ Evan's layup put the WARHAWKS up 11-10 with six and half minutes gone.  The WARHAWKS held a 1-4 point lead for the next couple of minutes before EauClaire tied it 15-15.  Quardell Young's layup regained the lead for the WARHAWKS who built it to a high of eleven points until the half ended with the margin of six points 33-27.  Evan's 10 points lead the WARHAWKS who held a 20-2 advantage in points from the bench and 15 offensive rebounds contributed to 18 second chance points.  Nic Cragg had 10 to lead the BluGolds.  EauClaire would get to within a pair points with a couple of baskets to start the second half  and later in the half stay within four points but the WARHAWKS held the lead which grew to a high of 18 points late in the half before the game ended with a 79-65 WARHAWKS win.

EauClaire outshot the WARHAWKS 47% to 37% but 29 offensive rebounds led to a 31-10 WARHAWKS scoring advantage on second chance points.  The WARHAWKS had more offensive rebounds than the BluGold had total rebounds.  Bench scoring was 35-4 and free throws 29-6 both in favor of the WARHAWKS

Evans came off the bench to lead both teams with 21 points and 11 rebounds.  Cody Odegaard chipped in with 14 points while Eric Bryson and Alex Merg each scored 11 points.  Young's 4 assists and 4 steals were game highs.

Jordan Petersen had 19 to lead the BluGolds.

Hey you Pointer guys...any word on VanHandel's status?  How long is he out for?  If he does come back...will he be a contributor?

I heard on the radio during the Oshkosh game that he is back practicing.  The announcers made it sound like as soon as he gets back into game shape that he should be in the rotation.  He was impressive during preseason practices before he got hurt, so I would expect him to get some minutes.  I don't want to speculate on how much he contributes until we see him in the lineup though.

Thanks for the update...hope to see him in the lineup soon!
