A take on holiday tournaments and stuff on the WIAC, MWC and NathCon http://diiihoopsblog.blogspot.com/2012/12/midweek-blog-5-its-tourney-time.html

You say...One of which pits three teams -- UW-Whitewater, St. Norbert and Marian -- in the same tournament in Green Bay. St. Norbert will get to face off against Marian in one game, and the Sabres are not a pushover. Whitewater gets Northwestern (Minn.), a team that knocked off a ranked Wheaton club not too long ago. So those are two very solid matchups, with the winners (probably Norbert and Whitewater) getting another quality matchup.

and...That's why I'm sure that St. Norbert made sure that there was at least one in-region game for all parties involved so that the tourney wasn't a complete waste for a Pool C resume.

But for other games this weekend, games like the possible Norbert-Whitewater matchup or La Crosse-North Central (Ill.) matchup really don't count for anything as far as the NCAA tournament goes. Sure they are nice wins to put under your cap, but for teams like St. Norbert and La Crosse, who could be on the Pool C bubble come March, it could spell doom, whereas another in-region victory likely would put them in.

From what I understand, the whole St. Norbert tournament is in-region.  St. Norbert, Marian and Whitewater matchups would all be in-region, since they are all Wisconsin teams, even though St. Norbert and Marian are in the Midwest Region and Whitewater is in the West Region.  Northwestern (MN) is a West Region team, but they are in the same administrative region as Wisconsin is.  Unless I completely misunderstand what a regional game is, or misunderstand what you are trying to say.  The La Crosse/North Central (IL) game is also in-region since Illinois and Wisconsin are also in the same administrative region.

Yeah that is correct...silly me for basing my blog off of one game that I played two years ago and thinking it was just that qualification. Pat corrected me on this earlier, meaning I will be adjusting accordingly...I don't think that this has much of an effect on teams that I am covering this weekend.

But it did hurt us at BenU in 2011.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, understanding that Texas, California and Illinois are in the same region, while Michigan and Indiana are not in Illinois' region is more than a head-scratcher.  I'm sure everyone would miss a lot of class time if they went out-of-region for a game this week....

Greek Tragedy

Indiana and Michigan may not be in Illinois' region, but there's still the 200 mile rule.  ;D

Does anyone even have classes this week?

Or in the case of the annual Wheaton/Calvin game the 196 mile rule (if they took the shortest route, rather than the 'official route')!  Perhaps they will eventually add the 'adjoining states' rule. :P

Hope/IWU is an obvious budding rivalry (they've now played twice in the last 9 months, going to the wire each time), but, alas, is not in-region.  Meanwhile, IWU/Occidental is in-region; Hope/Mississippi College is in-region.

I seriously doubt ANY college has classes this week - pretty sure that was AO's point!  Perhaps they will also make in-region exceptions for anyone played during semester break.

But I'm not holding my breath on any of these common sense suggestions. ::)

Titan Q

The in-region silliness will dramatically change soon with the 70% rule.  I assume that will be in place next year.

I was aware of the 200 mile rule but your ahead me on this 70% thing, Q.  What is that about?

"A game is a game" beginning in the 2013-14 academic year. The catch is that teams must play 70 percent of their competition in-region.

A slight modifier: The "a game is a game" principle only holds true if the opponent is a full D3 member or a D3 provisional member in its third or fourth year of provisional status.

Correct. And if I'm reading your words correctly, redundant. Games against your modifiers are not counted as in-region competition under the current rules either.

Gregory Sager

True, but that wasn't stated. I didn't want anyone to get the impression that every game will now be counted under the new rules.
