Let's change the award "Coach of the Year" to "Recruiter of the Year." Because, as Bud Grant said when his friend and coaching compatriot got the Bears' coaching  job:  "He'll do great if he gets players."

Coaching, aside from recruiting, is over-rated. Every coach in the WIAC could win with Point's talent.

I find that insulting.  I could name a few teams in the past that had more talent than Stevens Point that didn't win conference championships, compete at a very high level or win games in the NCAA tournament.

Even though I had a great time last night "catching up" with you after the game, I completely disagree with you about Semling.  In my book, the best coach in the conference, whatever you want to call the award.

There's no reason to separate the coach from the recruiter. They go hand in hand, and you can't have a strong program unless you are good at both. I fully subscribe to the mantra "coaches get too much blame when they lose and too much credit when they win" but to say anybody could win that talent is ridiculous. The history of college basketball is filled with stories of supremely talented teams that couldn't or didn't win.

You mean, there are coaches in this league who would not win, and my statement means win a majority of games, with Point's talent?

And why, GT, would my statement be insulting to you personally? Or isn't that what you mean?

So .500 is the threshold you had in mind when you said that? I doubt it. That sounds like a revisionist position.

If that's your threshold, then I think you've killed your own argument. If any coach in the league could go 13-12 with Point's team, then at 17-2 Semling must be an exceptional coach.

I find the statement insulting. I didn't say I was insulted. I think its insulting to Coach Semling and his staff. I consider your comment a possible knee-jerk response to Point's success. You seem to be a respected poster, I just disagree with you.

I'm surprised he posted that much.  :)

It looks like three-pointers and free throws were the difference.  Point goes 9-17 from beyond the arc while the WARHAWKS went 4-19 and Point has a 16-7 advantage from the charity stripe going 11 of 12 in the game's final 1:08.  When a game has 14 lead changes and seven ties that's how you win.  Maybe we're missing Oldegaard more than I thought we would.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  We're not that good of a team when we don't shoot well.   I admit Point's ownership of us has me frustrated though I imagine it frustrates some others much more.  We can only hope that if there is a third meeting it will be the charm.

Congrats on the win.  Semling is a great recruiter and an excellent coach.  The loss of Tillema last year killed the Pointers.  This year they haven't missed a beat.  That's not only a testament to the players but also Semling.

Not that it matters but I did post wraps after losses to Saint Norbert and Superior.   ;)

And as far as these Semling's posts about his ability as a coach: Sure other coaches might have success with that same talent where they win plenty of games but to get everything you possibly can out of your team, which is what Semling is doing, means you are a great coach, not just recruiter.

And as has been pointed out, Semling has this team 10-0, three game up on the rest of the conference, without Tyler freakin' Tillema hitting the court for the past month. That can't be overstated enough.

It seems to me that having a team as a perennial national title contender year-in and year-out means you are definitely pretty dang good at both.

JB--who said anything about a .500 threshold? By a majority, I meant 3/4 of the games, minimum.

A majority means more than half, Mr. Mayor. C'mon, really. River Falls library doesn't own a dictionary?

To a politician, a majority means anything that removes the possibility of a filibuster. So, um, that means that there are WIAC coaches who would not win enough games with UWSP's players to prevent an opposing coach from talking until everyone is forced to go home. Or something.

I know it's two days removed but I wanted to say thank you to Joe Theisen, Mike Carr and Casey Eckert for their outstanding job Wednesday night in the Quandt Fieldhouse.  It's the best officiating job I've seen all season and they did it in a big game with over 2200 people there.  Nice work men.  I know you don't hear that enough.  We all get excited about certain calls and especially if we are "fans" of a certain team but we also know at the end of the game that you are doing the best you can which is always pretty darn good.  Thanks again and hope to see you three at many more games this season, home or away!
