WARHAWKS: 64
Platteville: 50

Platteville scored first on Jim Stocki's three-pointer before Luke Knoble's layup got the WARHAWKS on the board two and half minutes into the game.  The Pioneers maintained their lead, which reached a high of five points, 7-2, until Quardell Young scored in the paint and gave the WARHAWKS their first lead, 10-9, with just under thirteen minutes to play.  The game was essentially decided over the next eleven minutes when the WARHAWKS made a 24-8 run and built the lead to it's first half high of seventeen points 34-17.  Six different WARHAWKS scored during the run with Young and Darnell Harris leading the way with 10 and 8 points respectively.  The half ended with the WARHAWKS lead at sixteen, 36-20.  The WARHAWKS shot a solid 55% in the half and out rebounded the Pioneers 23-14.  Young went 6 of 7 from the floor to lead the WARHAWKS with 12 points while Harris also reached double figures with 10 points.  Defensively the WARHAWKS held the Pioneers to just seven baskets from the floor on 24% shooting.   Luke Knobles jumper opened the scoring in the second half and created the WARHAWKS largest lead of the game at eighteen points.  Though it started to shrink the WARHAWKS maintained a double digit lead for the first eleven minutes of the second half.  Platteville's zone defense was more effective at preventing penetration and their offense was more productive over this stretch as they whittled the lead down to nine points, 46-37, on Eric Gerber's pair of free throws.  The WARHAWKS responded but Platteville continued to claw at the lead reducing it to a low of just six points, 56-50 with just under three minutes remaining.  However led by Eric Bryson's 4 for 4 the WARHAWKS went 8 for 8 from the free throw line while Platteville failed to score in the game's final two and half minutes.

The WARHAWKS finished 49% from the floor and out rebounded the Pioneers 39-25.  Young led the team with 18 points.  Harris finished with a double-double 13 points, 10 rebounds.  Bryson and Knoble also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.  Young and Bryson each had a game high 4 assists.  Bryson and Souter's 2 steals were game highs.

For the Pioneers Chas Cross had a game high 20 points and led the team with 8 rebounds.  Gerber added 10 points and had a game high 4 steals.  Rob Stallion also scored 10 points.

My midweek blog which gets me caught up (I've been tons busy with work and personal stuff) on whats going down in the conferences as well as other stuff in the WIAC, MWC and NathCon http://diiihoopsblog.blogspot.com/2013/02/midweek-blog-11-catching-up.html

I would like to argue or debate that the loss of Austin Ryf might have hurt Stevens Point more than the loss to Tyler Tillema. Point is chocked full of guards who can score, but not guards like Ryf who can distribute and get Point into the offense like he.

I'm wondering if there would be any chance at Semling putting Jackson at starting point guard so guys like Hass or Giordana don't have to handle that responsibility and just become scorers.

Also seems like the Warhawks have finally found their full groove late in the season and La Crosse is getting hot once again.

We've all seen players get on a shooting streak of one kind or another. Question:  is a player who makes 6 consecutive free throws more likely to make a 7th than he would ordinarily be? Conversely, is a player who has missed his previous 6 free throws more likely to miss the 7th? Research provides an answer.

You would think that would be a logical choice because he has some good ball skills, but lately for every good play he makes he makes a bad one as well. He has 21 assists to 20 turnovers on the year compared to Hass (40-25) and Giordana (28-17).

Not saying that I don't agree with those numbers...the problem with not starting him lies taking one away one of your better scorers, whether it would be Giordana or Hass, and possibly limiting their chances to score by making either the point guard. Not saying they aren't capable of being the point, you are just limiting their ability to fill it up IMO, which is why Jackson, a logical choice as a pass-first guy, no matter what the stats tell you, might be the better option...again just my opinion.

Wow...looks like the Hawks are playing well on both ends of the court. They are getting hot at the right time, only three (favorable) games left in the regular season.

And he was against RF in the game in Point as well. Not to knock a good player on a team I back unconditionally, but he had career games against RF this year, averaging 17.5 ppg, shooting 72% FG, 100% 3-pt and averaging 6 rpg.  He's been merely mortal against the better teams in the league (PL-WW-LX-ST), where he shot 37% FG, averaged less than 6 ppg, 1 rpg and had a 2-1 TO to assist ratio. I'd love for him to be the one to lead in Ryf's absence but I think he's more suited to being the change of pace guy off the bench.

Part of the problem in Point right now... is that they're simply running out of bodies. They've got 14 guys on the roster, and as of Wednesday, Tillema, Lutz, Forsythe, Ryf, and Studer weren't available. Ritchay joined the injured guys Wednesday.

That left just 8 other guys available to play, and 7 of them played, and Van Handel only played 4 minutes (is he banged up again too?).

For as much griping as people made last year about the short bench, at least guys were HEALTHY enough to play. This year, out of a simple lack of bodies, Point may only have 8 guys dressed and ready to go (assumption is that Bill Patterson just isn't where he needs to be to log meaningful minutes?).

Think about this for a second... If Point should blow somebody out, they CAN'T PULL ALL OF THE STARTERS! At a minimum, two starters will have to be on the floor at all times.

That's just crazy.

So, to say that Jackson should be starting... he's the first one off the bench, and he's going to be forced to play a lot of minutes anyway.

Who are you going to pull off the floor? Giordana? He hit two threes early in the game on Wednesday and actually logged the most minutes of any Pointer. Offensively, due to his size, he may be limited to just catch-shoot 3's... but he is a pretty good passer too, and he doesn't turn the ball over/make bad decisions.

And even though he is occasionally taken into the post against a bigger player, that hasn't happened all that often... and Point has gotten some good steals in those types of situations too.

Wow, I didn't realize they were quite running that low on bodies. I knew that they were getting down there but not quite that bad. So that most definitely limits there lineups.

Which means any advantage they would gain by putting Jackson in the starters role is going to be negligible anyway with how few options there are to go to.

Aric Smith did not get WIAC Player of the Week, but should have. His stats, including points scored over the games of Feb. 2 and the previous one (52), are decidedly better than Oman's, good as those are. The argument that RF did not win against Pville when he got 28 points on 8/10 shooting, including 6/7 threes, and 6/6 f.t. shooting, is senseless, if that's the reason. A player can't have a great game in a losing cause? Baloney!

I haven't compared stats with the othe nominees, but on the surface, Smith has a pretty good argument.  Not sure if he is hindered simply because he's a pure scorer and really nothing else.

He definitely has been on a tear lately.

Regarding Player of the Week discussion, I believe the "week" consists of league games played on Jan 30th and February 2nd.  River Falls had a bye on Jan 30th, so Smith's "week" only included 1 game.  This is probably why Oman received the award.  I can't believe it has anything to do with how he plays or who he played against.

Actually, I'm sure it has everything to do with how he plays.  Anyway, you make a good point about the bye.  I had just looked at his last two games prior to Wednesday's and didn't catch the dates.
