GT - really confusing me, are you saying because you perceive Smith as a scorer first, then he'll be less likely to receive recognition?

It's true that Smith has attracted more attention bcuz of his scoring than bcuz of other aspects of his game. But consider this: he's 11th in the league in blocked shots. He's 6'0." He has amazing timing. At Superior, he blocked a pass thrown over his head and intended for a post player, actually almost caught the pass, then turned it into a 2 on 1 break resulting in a score for RF. Also, he seems to wait until the game is in danger of being lost; then he starts shooting, "taking the game on his shoulders." I've seen him make a game ending 3 and, in other games score most of his points in the last 6-7 minutes, as he did at Superior when he scored 25 points, his third in a row of at least 24 points.

Aric Smith did not get WIAC Player of the Week, but should have. His stats, including points scored over the games of Feb. 2 and the previous one (52), are decidedly better than Oman's, good as those are. The argument that RF did not win against Pville when he got 28 points on 8/10 shooting, including 6/7 threes, and 6/6 f.t. shooting, is senseless, if that's the reason. A player can't have a great game in a losing cause? Baloney!

Oh, Fred, quit your fussing.  You're just mad because it's the Stout guy over the RF guy.  And we are still mad because we thought Melzer was going to come and play for us, so just give us one little Player of the Week award!

Oh, and one more thing Fredfalcon.  I see that you have more posts than I do and I have more karma.  What say you about that?

Far be it from me to get in the middle of a debate between two legends like Stoutguy and Fred Falcon.  But I'd gotten bored sitting here waiting for the BADGERS game to start so I decided to put each player's performance to the statistical test.

Arik Smith: 1/30/13 - 24+1+1+1+3 = 30
                                  30-5-1 = 24

Alex Oman: 1/30/13 - 22+4+1+1 = 28
                                   28-8-2 = 18
                   2/2/13   - 15+3+8+2 = 28
                                   28-9-3 = 16

I think I've figured it correctly.  I'm sure many things go into determining who is player of the week but from a purely statistical standpoint Smith had the best game.  That being said I don't have a problem with Oman's selection.  He had a good week and has been instrumental in the Blue Devil's resurgence.   I just wanted to let Fred know that he was right.  :D :D ;)

Well, I have to admit the opportunity to gang up on Stoutguy had a distinctive appeal in itself.

Darn you, BW.  I plan to call you out on our Stout/EC broadcast this afternoon.  Shame on you for taking FF's side.  Those darn stats of yours again.  Remember figures don't lie but lyers can figure, or something like that.  I'm back from the deep South for the rest of the winter and would like nothing better than to run down to WW for a playoff game.  Stout needs to take care of business, though, because if they don't, they can still lose out on a home game.  Lx, Platteville still lurk.

I view him a scorer.  That's not a bad thing.  Tony Mane was a pure scorer.  But I do think that may hamper him.

After looking back at his stat line, he had a good scoring week (RF only played one game).  24 points.  But 1 assist, 1 rebound, 1 block is hardly anything to get excited about. I do like his 3 steals in that game.

He had a GREAT game Wednesday.  25 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assists...along with 2 steals.  If he has anything close to that today, he will have a good shot at POTW.

Arik Smith came back down to earth with a thud today at Oshkosh in the 75-72 double o.t. loss. He had 9  points and played the fewest minutes so far this year, whether because he was sick or just ineffective I'm not sure. Part of it was foul trouble. He sat the bench in both halves because of fouls ( he ended up with four, but had two, 4 minutes before the half and so sat then.) Peterson had approx. 14, Udo 11 rebds, 9 pts.

Falcons had 20 turnovers, but out re-bounded Titans by nearly 20, so those stats were off setting. Cory Nickel again had a very good game with approximately 24. Neither team shot 40%. I don't think it was a good game to watch for fans of either team. Another player (Royston?) had over 20 for the Titans, who broke a 9 game losing streak.

Now that I check the stats, Peterson had a dbl/dbl with 11 rbds, Nickel had 26, Royston 24

I'm not going to do one of those game reviews like Badgerwarhawk does because I can't figure out how to change colors whenever I say Stout, but I will say that this Stout team is very good.  Eddie has bought into the concept that you can not outscore every opponent but you can play lock down defense and have a chance to win.  That coupled with a great point guard (Eric Olson) and you have a team who is 10-1 at home and has a shot at beating anyone.  Looking forward to the Wed match at Johnson.  Point is in first place for a reason but I think this Stout team has a chance to get this one.

What are you adding and subtracting in your formula?

Points + rebounds + assists + blocks + steals = Score
Score - shots missed - free throws missed - turnovers = Efficiency Rating
