I thought Bryson played a great game. He hit some huge 3s down the stretch on UWPs zone defense. Harris was just on fire draining 3s left and right...sometimes a good 4 feet beyond the arc.

I hope this hot streak continues deep into the post season for the Hawks. they will be a tough out.

Platteville play zone the entire game?

Don't think so. They played 1-3-1 during most of the second half.

WARHAWKS: 66
Platteville: 55

The Pioneers opened the scoring with one of two free throws from Jake Manning.  Jim Stocki added a Pioneer basket before Alex Merg got the WARHAWKS on the board with a layup.  Neither team was shooting that well and over the next four to five minutes the Pioneer lead fluctuated between one and three points.  Chas Cross's layup which was followed by his three-pointer stretched the Pioneer lead to six, 10-4, with just under five minutes remaining.  The two teams traded three-pointers and the Pioneer's maintained at least a four point lead until Stocki scored five straight points and the Pioneers lead reached its high of nine points, 22-13, with a little under five minutes to the half.  The WARHAWKS cut their deficit to three points 22-19 when KJ Evans scored after the stealing the in bounds pass but the Pioneers got four straight points from Rob Stallion to go back up by seven before Patrick Souter recovered a blocked shot and connected on a jumper making the score 26-21 when the half time buzzer sounded.

It was a frustrating half for the WARHAWKS who shot 31% from the floor scoring just 8 baskets on 26 attempts.  I lost count of how many shots rolled around, fell off the lip or were half way down and spun out.  Fortunately the Pioneers weren't shooting a whole lot better at 40%, scored 10 baskets and held only a 3-2 advantage from beyond the arc.  Seven WARHAWKS turnovers led to a 9-3 scoring advantage for the Pioneers though a 20-14 (7-3 on the offensive end) WARHAWKS rebounding advantage led to a 8-1 advantage in second chance points.  Eric Bryson led the WARHAWKS with 7 points while Stocki led the Poineers with 7 points.  Darnell Harris pulled down 7 rebounds.

Harris' old fashioned three point play opened the second half.  His free throw a minute later pulled the WARHAWKS to within a point and Luke Knoble's layup following that created their first lead of the game 26-25.  Over the next three minutes the two teams traded baskets and the lead four times when leading by one Patrick Souter sank a three-pointer which was followed by back to back three-pointers from Harris and the WARHAWKS had their first double digit lead 40-30 with a little over twelve minutes to go.  Platteville cut the deficit to single digits and reduced it to five points, 43-38, in the seventh minute but Eric Bryson's three-pointer created the second double digit lead 51-41 with four and half minutes left.  The Pioneers would get to within six points but the WARHAWKS went 12-14 from the free throw line over the last two and half minutes of the game.

The WARHAWKS shot 52% in the second half and had just two turnovers.  Harris led the way with a game high 20 points and rounded out a double-double with 10 boards.  Bryson added 17 points and Souter finished with 10.

Platteville was led by Stocki who scored 13 points while Eric Gerber added 10.  Cross had a game high 13 rebounds, all defensive, though he was held to 9 points.

It was a great atmosphere.  A large, loud crowd for both teams.

It was also a pleasure to meet palum.

This game reminded me of the old days when Bo & Augie where on the bench and the crowd was really into it.  From a Platteville prospective they played 2 1/2 great games in 5 days only to run out of gas in the last 20 minutes.  With only Stallion graduating they should be strong again next year.  My $64,000 question for WW why does Miller keep getting T'd up why he has good leads?? he did it in the regular season and again Sat.  Great game good luck to WW and SP in the tourney.  It was good to meet BW and see my friend Voice at the game.

It was a great crowd. I went to the game before against Stout and I could have say anywhere I wanted. Then for the Platteville game, I arrived 5 minutes late and I was forced to sit in the back corner of the gymnasium. Great atmosphere.

Not sure about Miller.....but maybe he didn't like how Platteville was getting the majority of the calls in the second half. I'm not saying they weren't legitimate, but I remember looking up at the scoreboard and it was UWW 1 - UWP 4 in team fouls. A few minutes later it was UWW 6 - UWP 4. Then he was called for the "T" right about then. At first I thought Bryson was the one that was T'd up...but I guess it was Miller. Maybe it's a strategy for a few makeup calls...I don't know.

Potential BRUTAL path

What a region: Washington, IWU, UWW and NCC.

Miller's T, imo.  this was a rough physical game. as usual questionable calls and noncall. this particular noncall occured late in game after I believe an inbounds play when a WW player ended up on the deck in front of P bench with play moving toward WW basket. This was a deliberate hit on an unsuspecting player and the officials were else where. Agn jmo and maybe others can add more insight. Miller was defending his player.

The box score for the first Platteville game credits the technical to Bryson not Miller.

Dubuque has a player who is from Whitewater.  Miles Hookstead is a multiple sport athlete at Dubuque starting as the tight end on the football team (IIAC all conference)  and playing as a back up big on the hoops squad.  He also has a sister, Sabrina, who is a member of the WARHAWKS women's basketball team.  Should be an interesting day for the family.

I'm not so sure, Point could easily be host for game #2 if they go by SOS and regional ranking credentials. Knightslappy's regional rankings has Calvin at #58 SOS, while UWSP is #6. Even the NCAA, in their last revealed regional rankings has UWSP far ahead .586 vs .441

Early info on Northwestern, MN

The Eagles were winners of the UMAC conference and finished with a 21-6 record. NW played four teams on the Pointer schedule, Beating River Falls and Superior at home at the Erickson Center in Roseville, MN and losing to Buena Vista at home as well. They also lost to Whitewater in the St. Norbert tourney in December. Impressive home win against then unbeaten Wheaton IL in December. The Eagles finished with a 1-3 record against regionally ranked opponents (also losing at Luther College) and had a .463 SOS.

NW averages 78.7 ppg (70.8 def ppg), shooting 46.7% from the field and 41.5% from 3 pt, averaging 10 made per game. Shooting only 66.5% from the FT line, but averaging 17.9 assists per game with a 1.6 assist-turnover ratio.

Not blessed with much height, the Eagles start 6'6" Daniel Petkau, 6'4" Tom Gisler, 6'3" Lance Westberg, 6'2" Ellis Libby and 6'2" Wade Chitwood. Inserting freshman Petkau into the starting lineup full-time for the last 2/3 of the season has resulted in NW going 14-2 since going 0-2 in the St. Norbert tourney. Chitwood leads the team in scoring at 17.1 ppg, followed by Westberg at 13.3 and Gisler at 12.9 (including 50% from 3-pt). Gisler, Petkau and Westberg all average over 5 rebounds per game, while Libby averages 5.4 assists per game to go with his 9 pts per game. Top subs are 6'6" Matt Watnemo (9.0 ppg) and 6' Michael Carney (7.1 ppg). While Chitwood is the leading scorer, five players have scored at least 20 points in a game this year showing they are a very balanced team that can have several players lead the way

If it goes by seeding (and if Point beats Northwestern), then I think SP would either go to Rose Hulman or host Calvin, assuming that the highest seeds all host in the first round.

Calvin, though they have a gaudy record, has a very low SOS and has, I believe, zero games against regionally ranked opponents (going by memory here...). No other MIAA teams were ranked.

Calvin was also #5 in the Great Lakes, as was Rose Hulman in the Midwest. Even if Point drops two slots (WW and Whitworth) in the final unreleased regional rankings, Point would be #4 in the West.

Another tough first round matchup for my Eagles.  The boys seem pretty excited judging from the selection show video.  More excitement is shown here.
