If this was a D1 program, the coach would be gone.  Lynched.  Tossed on the curbside.  That's not fair, but it is true.  Ask Mike Davis.
So I suppose Ackerman should be "kicking Lechnir to the curbside" as well, since they have only made the NCAA postseon once in the past seven years.

I'm sorry, but TVD is a quality coach who has had success in the past.  I don't think he should be judged on one lackluster season.

With Whitewater poised to win the title outright, I'm wondering: When was the last time one school won outright titles in both football and men's bb in the same school year ? Do any of our historians know ?

Unofficial results, since it's nearly 2 a.m. and I am getting sleepy as I type:
1994, 1981 and 1961 had one team win both sports outright

2001 - Eau Claire and Stevens Point win football; Stevens Point and Whitewater win hoops
1994 - Whitewater wins football, basketball
1984 River Falls and Whitewater win football; Whitewater and Stevens Point win basketball
1981 Eau Claire wins football, basketball
1968 Oshkosh and Platteville win football; Oshkosh wins basketball
1961 Stevens Point wins football, basketball

Great job bulk19, aside from the really bright yellow "Stevens Point!"  :D

At least they've finally found all TVD's "temporary" Oshkosh fans--they went to Milwaukee !!  ;D

An Eagle win today would give La Crosse a 20 win season for the first time since it went 20-7 in '82-83. LC won 12 Conference games that year. Additionally, a win would give Coach Koelbl a 38-37 record in his 3 seasons here in Coulee Country. By any standard, it has been a very enjoyable and memorable season for long-suffering fans of Eagle basketball.

Do you think they have stepped up, or has the conf. stepped down to meet them?

If the conference has stepped down, so have other conference in the Midwest. They went 9-0 in non-conference as well. They crushed Buena Vista and Coe of the Iowa Conference. Coe's in 1st and Buena Vista's 4th. Beat Viterbo who's 2nd in their league. Lakeland, who won their league, and St. Thomas and Carleton who are tied for the MIAC.

So in non-conference they've beaten the "champs" of three other leagues, all by 10 or more. The Massey Ratings still have the WIAC rated as the number two league in the nation and La Crosse is one of three WIAC teams in the top 14 of that poll.

It's hard to tell if that comment was a question or a poke but I think it's pretty clear La Crosse has stepped up.

Billys,

I don't think it was a poke, I think it was a legit question... La Crosse hasn't had a lot of basketball tradition.

Jville flash,

The quality (and CONSISTENT quality) at La Crosse has risen, IMO.  They've got a bonafide inside/outside attack, and they play good defense.  I think they've got a shot at an at-large bid, if they don't get the AQ via the conference tournament, especially if they win tonight.  And if they get into the NCAA tournament, then I think they've got a shot to knock some teams off.  A lot of Division 3 teams do one or two things well... and this La Crosse team is pretty well-rounded, and much more well-rounded than La Crosse teams from the past.

... But, for that matter, any of the top WIAC teams would be a good representative for just that reason.  Like I said earlier, it all depends on the brackets, but I think, even in a "down" year for the WIAC, our rep(s) should be able to win two games and at least make it to the Sweet 16.

The reason why the draw matters is because of the NCAA's new hosting system, where there are 4 team regionals in the first two rounds, instead of the top seeds hosting the first two games.  If the WIAC team(s) host, then I think they've got a great shot at the Sweet 16, because of sheer home court advantage.  This is one of the top conferences in the country, attendence-wise, and the fans really come out when we're in February and March.

Senior night at the Quandt.  UWSP fans bid farewell to Brian Bauer and Matt Bouche in their "last" night at the Quandt field house (even though, at the minimum, next Tuesday's game will be in Point as well).

Bauer, after a red-shirt season, saw sparse minutes in the first 21 games (9 minutes per) but then stepped in after a Nick Bennett injury and started his first college game in a huge contest against Whitewater, who had beaten Point earlier in the year and was just one game back.  Bauer came up huge and scored 15 points, leading the Pointers to victory and to an outright conference championship.  His sophomore year, Bauer served as a key reserve, including 5 mid-season starts, but a late season back injury hampered his play in the post season.  Last year, he was again a key reserve, backing up Maus and Kalsow in the post and being a great role-player.

This season, Bauer has been hampered by plantar fasciitis, but he's been a great senior leader.  No longer is he a roll player, this season he has been a true leader.  Hopefully he will be able to play tonight and in the conference tournament.

Matt Bouche is another guy who has been waiting in the wings to really shine.  His first three seasons, he was a reserve, not getting much playing time, and though he started at the beginning of the season, it wasn't until mid-season that he really began to show what he could do.  His performance against La Crosse was really a break-out performance, and it kept the Pointers on pace with the rest of the conference leaders.

These guys are good players, but more than that, they're just really good guys.  They've been great leaders this season, and hopefully the season will continue through next year to another NCAA berth!

Wasn't a poke. Does anyone think there is a team even anywhere near as good as Point last year? I don't pretend to know anything about basketball other than just being a fan, but I haven't seen a team that seems like it could compete with last years Point team. Maybe I over-estimated them.

My initial response is definitely not.  I don't think that anyone could match our depth, experience, offensive, or defensive prowess.  But I also think that we would beat anyone... given another shot at Marquette, we'd toast 'em by 30!  ;)

Seriously, though... after the Final Four last year, Pat Coleman, and others, stated that the Pointers were the best Division 3 team they'd ever seen.  It's all speculation... you can't really do anything but wonder about that Point team and teams from the past, or the present, or future... but...

I think WIAC teams this year would have had a hard time with Point.  That's not to say that in 100 games, Point would win 100 times... but even against the top teams, I'd say no less than 90%.  ... that's actually what our winning percentage was, last year, so I don't think that that's an outrageous statement... (29-3) but maybe I'll let others chime in.  ;D

No one is close to where Point was last season. As a matter of fact I think last years Pointers were the best team they have ever had. I have seen the Pointers play since the late 60's (Tom Ritzenthaler/Mike Hughes/Bob Henning) thru the 70's (John Mack/Bill Zuiker/Phil Rodriguez), 80's (Terry Porter/Tim Naegli/Craig Hawley/Chas Pronchinske) and 90's (Andy Boario/Mike Paynter/Brant Bailey), but there was never a team like the team of the 2000's. Josh Iserloth/Neal Krajnik/Nick Bennett/Jason Kalsow weren't equaled by any other team. The Terry Porter/Tim Naegli edition was close, but two NCAA Championships (and who knows what might have been in 2002-03 if not for being upset by GA) seals the deal!

WW wins 91-88.  Manchester hits two free throws with .1 seconds left on the clock.  Great double overtime game at Zorn, listened to it on the radio.

WW most likely will play same team on Tuesday, too bad i actually have to pay for that game, but I will be there for my second game of the year :(  Toellner had 22 points but fouled out.

Home court throughout, congrats WW on a great season.  May not be as sweet as those UWSP teams, but still a great accomplishment nonetheless.

GO HAWKS.

WW prevails in a game where the teams just simply could not put the opponent away.  EC shooting a 1-1 with 6sec left and a 2 point lead.  The FT is missed and after a TO, Manchester takes a pass at half court and eventually gets fouled almost making the shot.  He calmly makes the FTs.

In the 1st OT, WW only cans 1 of 2 FTs to make it a 3 point game.  WW plays great defense, but Ryan throws a prayer, with someone right in his face, that banks in to send the game to a 2nd OT.
