2 solid commitments for Stevens Point made public.  I think they needed some wing forwards with size above 6'4".  They got 2, 6'6" Brad Freeborn from River Falls High School and 6'5" Aaron Retzlaff from Randolph High School.  They are ranked 40 and 42 respectively in the wissports senior rankings.

I've seen both play a handful of times, should help in different ways.  Freeborn is a guy with a very good midrange game that will do the little things, seems like a guy who is always in the right spot.  He is very good on the defensive end, that's where I think he'll make an impact.

Retzlaff is an extremely strong guy down on the block.  He muscles through opponents for hoops in the paint, also a very good rebounder and leaper.  He needs to improve his shot to become more of a complete player but should also be very good on the defensive end due to his athleticism and strength.

Point doesn't need much in this recruiting class due to so many guys coming back from last year's team except to build depth for future years, but I think they could add a point guard to Retzlaff and Freeborn.  They still have Jackson and Ryf back but after next year Jackson is gone.  I think bringing in a point guard this year to get acclimated to the system would serve him well to backup Ryf during his senior season.

You can never have enough recruits.  I mean, we had 8 last year and only half made it.

That's very true, in Division 3 with no scholarships the turnover from year to year is pretty high.  I still would say that Point doesn't need much in this recruiting class though.  Most guys that leave the program, leave the program due to lack of playing time.  That shouldn't be the case for Point, they lose one guy from their rotation and should get Tillema, Lutz and Studer back from injuries.

They need to bring in a few guys this year for the future though.  Point will lose a ton of talent the next 2 years.

Ryf will be a junior next season.

I'm talking in 2 years with Ryf.  Jackson will be gone after next season, you need someone to take his place in 2 years.  I think it would be smart to bring in a point guard maybe a year earlier than you need him, so he gets a year in the system and acclimated to college before he steps into being a major contributor.

I think the point guard of the future may already be enrolled in school. Curtis Parker, announced as a recruit for the 2012-13 year is still enrolled as is Demetrious Jackson, DeVon's younger brother (who I think was an academic casualty), as well as a third recruit (name escapes me) who was also academic casualty.

I never did see Parker play and knew he was recruited to Point last year....with that said, I'm not counting on him being much of a contributor if he didn't make the roster as a recruited player...when a few non recruited players made the initial roster over him.

We can talk about Whitewater's recruits too if you'd like...

I don't have any information because we typically don't release any information until they are enrolled and practicing.  I hope you didn't think I was in any way annoyed with the Point love fest.  It really isn't any different than the WARHAWKS love fest that has been going on the past seven years in the football forum.  I was just joking with the comment which is why I added the winking dude after it.  Actually I find the discussion interesting and as is often the case Point looks to be stockpiling talent.  I like the rivalry between our two programs even though we've been on the short end of it more often than not these past few years.

Sounds like he was a pretty good football player too. Wonder if he will try double duty.

I didn't take it as you being annoyed at all....I could see where fans of other teams could be annoyed with most of the posters on the basketball forum being Pointer fans though.  Also, I really like hearing about the recruits coming into each program of the WIAC...so any information from posters on recruits is welcomed information for me.  Heck, reading the recruit articles to the WIAC is the reason I subscribe to Wissports.

According to Wissports, there has only been one commitment for Whitewater thus far...Ryan McBride from Brookfield East.

I've been told by more than one coach that it's really not until the next season that you see the effect of winning the national title in basketball. UWW should be in line for a good incoming class next fall.

QuoteThe coaching staff at UW-Whitewater liked what they saw out of Racine Lutheran senior Clay Stevens when they watched the 6-foot-4 wing guard compete in a game just after Christmas.

So much, in fact, that coach Pat Miller and assistant Lou Chapman made Stevens one of their highest recruiting priorities.

That diligence on the recruiting path paid off for the Warhawks as Stevens gave a verbal commitment to play for the NCAA Division III powerhouse over the weekend.

"Clay selected Whitewater over interest from Concordia and Marian," Racine Lutheran coach Jeff Christensen said. "Whitewater got on him at Christmas and they stayed after him hard the rest of the season."

An honorable mention all-state pick by the Associated Press and first-team all-state selection among Division 5 athletes by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, Stevens played a huge role in leading Racine Lutheran to a 14-13 record and a spot in the WIAA sectional finals.

He averaged 20.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor, 35 percent from three-point range and 87 percent from the foul line....

Per Mark Miller UWW picked up Clay Stevens from Racine Lutheran.  Really nice pickup for UWW.
