UWO's new state-aid-matching policy for Illinois students is really paying off for the Titans as far as men's basketball is concerned.

Is that implying that it's just Oshkosh? It's a state school, so wouldn't the whole UW system have that?

Not necessarily.  Parkside has a similar program, I believe.

Correct. Not every UW branch offers it.

So what is everyones thoughts on the whole Rutgers situation? Allegations of verbal abuse have been made public at UW Green Bay as well.

I don't condone throwing basketballs at players heads or their genitals. However I do not have a problem being grabbed by the arm or pushed to the right defensive position. I find it amusing to read in the National papers that these big time d-1 coaches would never do anything like that. I find it hard to believe that even for coaches at the d3 level never yelled at or grabbed a player.

As a player from my youth through my college years, I will admit I got yelled at and pushed and grabbed into position plenty of time by my coach. And not once did I cry to my mommy or have my daddy write a note to the AD.

It is happening at Chapman University in California for baseball now too.  It always seems like when one case comes to light plenty follow regardless of merit.  I agree that student athletes need to toughen up, but with that said the Rutgers coach had gone over the line in what he was doing.  The video evidence shown proves that.  He crossed a thin line that defines what is constructive and what is destructive.  I am kind of surprised that there wasn't more player turnover for the times he was a coach there.

While I think the Rutgers coach's behavior was over the top I'm not naive enough to think similar things aren't happening at other institutions.  Like some of the rest of you I was swore at, grabbed and pushed around during my athletic career as well.  In fact in high school my football coach made me bend over and struck me with his fraternity pledge paddle so hard that it drove my head into a bank of lockers and I had a large bruise  on my butt.  My offense was tackling the quarterback during a practice when he was wearing a red jersey.   I never did tell my parents about it because I figured my dad would be angry at me for doing it.  Later in the season the same coach got into a fist fight with a player's parent during a practice.  We were always taught to respect our coaches and it wasn't until after I had graduated and matured some that I realized that particular individual was a horse's backside.

For tackling the quarterback with the red jersey during practice? LOL  ;D

What's a little pushing and yelling, huh? Kids today are soft!  ;) (I mean, my generation, heaven forbid,drank out of the garden hose and we rode our bikes without helmets, which didn't exist, unless you counted football helmets, which made you look like a dork!  ;) )

But no, I don't condone what the Rutgers coach...  I'm really interested in how the UWGB situation plays out...

Meanwhile, do we have a D3 men's champ crowned yet? There is sarcasm in that comment. I understand why they played when the other two divisions did, but during the layoff between rounds I seemed to lose interest in following it, or the D3 games got lost in the shuffle, in my opinion... Hence, I don't like the format....

I agree with you bulk. Wasn't this part of the 75th anniversary deal and things will go back to a Final Four in Salem again next year? Maybe I'm wrong but that was my impression on the format change this year.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

Yes... this was in celebration of the 75th Anniversary and next year the championship will be part of the Final Four in Salem (or maybe an Elite Eight structure). However, the D1 weekend experience was terrific and I highly suspect they are looking to see if this can be done in the future a bit more permanently. If they head down this road, they will have a lot of things to solve the schedules and season length for men's and women's basketball especially to avoid the six week tournament - so this isn't going to happen overnight.

NOW, Salem has one year left on its bid, so I see one of two things happening should they move forward with trying to host all three divisions in the same city:
- They need to get their ducks in a row for the 2014-15 season so Salem and supposedly others know what they are bidding to host (Final Four and championship or say Elite Eight and Final Four).
- If they can't get their ducks in a row that quickly, then maybe look at it for 2016-17 since I am not sure they want to do to Salem what they did this year and change what they are hosting in the second year of the rewarded bid - not exactly fair to Salem to do that to them twice (once for a special occasion is understandable).

Mr. McHugh,

I agree that Salem or whomever hosts in the future need to be told as early in advance as possible but I'm wondering if maybe the businesses in the Salem area didn't benefit by having eight teams (plus fans) come to town instead of just the final four?  I wasn't there but was there a lot of disappointment in Salem with this years setup?  Here's hoping that my favorite team gets to see Salem in the near future!

Pat Coleman

More players but fewer fans -- not sure what the impact to the area was.

Per Twitter, UW-Oshkosh has landed two Chicago area forwards...

* Jimmy Lundquist, 6-7 SF/PF (Schaumburg H.S.) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVu5_sEmqWw

* Sean Dwyer, 6-6 G/F (Stagg H.S.) - http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1177549/#highlights/9375372

Per Twitter, another Chicago area standout to UW-Oshkosh...

* Kyle Bolger, 6-1 PG (Schaumburg H.S.) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw2d33cGJkE

I was more impressed with 23 in red from the first game than Bolger.

Interesting to see Chris Otule of Marquette apply for a medical redshirt. In 2008-2009 and 2011-2012, he played a total of 11 games. Why didn't he applied after one of those two seasons? Is there is an advantage or disadvantage in applying now instead of before?
