Point's schedule has been released!!!  Maybe I am mistaken but it seems like the schedule came out a little earlier than normal....very difficult schedule like normal, should prepare them well for hopefully a deep postseason run with the talent they have.  I'm definitely looking forward to and planning to attend non conference games against Hope and St Thomas along with a few conference games as well.

Yes. Very nice schedule with Whitworth, St. Thomas, Hope and North Central. I hope to see a few more games this year and if I'm good, trying to convince mommy to let me go to Vegas. As always looking forward to the new season.

Lawrence, St. John's, St. Olaf, Edgewood and Whitman (Vegas) round out the non-conference schedule. I do like the busy holiday portion of the schedule with two conference games (@ EC, WW) sandwiching a bye and then games Dec. 14, 21, 28, 29 and 31, being @ St. John's, St. Thomas, the two Vegas games (Whitworth and Whitman) and then a quick turn around at North Central on New Year's eve. Non of this 10-day break stuff!

Great schedule... but a brutally tough December. There's a realistic chance that March wouldn't be as tough...

Of the 17 players on UW-Oshkosh's preseason men's basketball roster, 11 are true freshmen.

It looks like they will be extremely young.  That recruiting class was extremely impressive for this year, may take some lumps in year 1 but they are on the upswing.

I never thought the karma feature was very relevant, so interesting to see we have a applaud/smite split now. If there was ever a time when I felt it was relevant, it was when you could applaud or smite each individual post.

I didn't notice that change until I read your post.

DIII News Preseason Poll...Point comes in at #11, UWW comes in after the top 25 with others to watch

I'll be honest, with as talented a team as Point has this year, I expect them to finish higher than 11th.  I'm expecting them to challenge for the National Title.

Pat Coleman

I guess I'd say I wouldn't let a low ranking from DIII News bother you.

Don't worry Pat...it definitely doesn't bother me...just stating my two cents and hoping to start some conversation.

So point gets Tillema back this year along with 4 starters.  Is Jackson really not playing if so that's a huge loss.  Who else did point add that will be a factor this year?  Any freshman recruits going to make an immediate impact?

Point returns Ryf, Tillema, Ritchay, Hass, Heuer, Richard, Lutz, Forsythe and McGann....that's an extremely solid top 9 right there without any new recruits.  My guess is that no freshman will see significant playing time.

They do have a transfer from Division 2 Northern Michigan coming in that can replace DeVon Jackson.  As a freshman, Stephen Pelkofer started 24 of 25 games...along with averaging 8 points a game and playing more minutes than anyone else.  He is a very good shooter and a big time pickup for UWSP.

Top 50 Seniors that headed to Point include 6'6" Brad Freeborn from River Falls, 6'5" Aaron Retzlaff from Randolph and 6'4" Caden Unteidt from Edgar...this if off the top of my head so I may be forgetting someone.

It's years like this with guys like these that really make me wish that UWSP played a J.V schedule.

I think all three of these players have tremendous upside and could become good college basketball players.

But they're going to have a year or two before they're really "in the mix" and it can be really tough putting in all the effort and not getting any time.

There's a thread on the Multi-Region page discussing the start of the season (Oct 15 for those who are counting down... or rather, for those who haven't STARTED counting down...) and it was brought up that D-I teams started practice earlier this year, last week, in fact.

On one hand, it seems like this would give teams a leg up... we'll see more competitive games early because teams can work out the kinks earlier as well.

But, on the other hand, I said that, during the two weeks before scrimmages, you really get sick of playing against the SAME guys over and over. Once that scrimmage comes around, it's your first time playing against someone else, and it can really boost team and individual morale, but until then, you get sick of playing against the same guys.

EDIT: And for the D-I guys, this period of time will be even longer than just two weeks now, exacerbating the problem.

So, the players who play in the games start to get some "relief" from the playing-against-the-same-ugly-dudes-every-night issue. But that's not the case for everybody. The players not getting any playing time don't get this relief. They're only ever playing against the first and second team, the guys who ARE getting PT.

It can be a double whammy too... not only are you going against the same guy(s) in practice all the time, they're also the guys who are GETTING playing time, and it can cause some internal resentment within the team.

That's where the J.V. schedule comes in. Not only does it give guys valuable playing experience in a full game setting, it's against other competition and can recharge players in that same way.

As an "end of the bench" guy my whole career, we prided ourselves in stepping out on the practice floor each and every night and giving our full effort. This, ultimately, turned into our "games" but it was still difficult because it was against the same opponent every night... and those guys were darn good!

As an aside... the claim to fame of the "third team" my senior year was this... in the last two practices before we left for Salem to capture the second of our back-to-back National Championships, during our end-of-practice competitive drills, the third team beat both the first and second teams. On those two nights, we outplayed the National Champions.

As another aside... those two practices excepted... it usually wasn't a GOOD thing when we beat the first and second team. We played our rears off... and it made the first and second teams look really bad, and it made coach really mad. And, strangely, that still affected us all in the same way!

News from Mark Miller's twitter feed on UW-Whitewater

Mark Miller ‏@WisBBYearbook 9 Oct
Among the newcomers in the UW-Whitewater program -- former Whitefish Bay standout Ron Patten (6-6) and ex-Madison East PG Rudy Bentley.

I watched Ron Patten play in the state championship two years ago, I was extremely impressed.  If he has gotten stronger in the last 2 years I expect him to be an impact player for the Warhawks.  I don't know much about Bentley other than he is tiny.  He was ranked pretty highly in state his senior year so I'm sure he has some skills.  The yearbook will be out soon, definitely looking forward to seeing the rosters and all the newcomers.  There are always a few newcomers that haven't been announced by anyone.
