Greek Tragedy

Big game tonight as Whitewater travels to St. Norbert.
Eau Claire has a tough game tonight against Loras. They've knocked off Illinois Wesleyan and Wheaton.
River Falls visits St. John's as well

Last night was a good night in the WIAC

Stout, Superior and La Crosse all got road wins.  The Blue Devils beat Luther in overtime, the Yellowjackets took down St. Scholastica and  the Eagles survived their jet lag to Viterbo.

WARHAWKS: 73
St Norbert: 62

Led by two, 26-24, at the half.  A couple of thirteen point leads in the second half.  WARHAWKS get to the free throw line, 29 of 37.  St Norbert only had 18 attempts.  With our athleticism and quickness the emphasis on hand checking, blocking, etc. is getting us to the line.

KJ Evans: 25 pts, 13 reb;  Reggie Hearn: 13 pts; Eric Bryson: 13 pts.

RF gets killed by SJU 88-59 after a 32 all tie at half. White had 18, Gresmer 11.  :'(

That's a very good win for UWW. I've seen St. Norbert, and the Green Knights are a tough out.

Greek Tragedy

GAMES THROUGH SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24

EAU CLAIRE (3-1)

W at Hamline 70-66
W at St. Scholastica 77-59
L at Bethel 74-67
W vs. Marian 81-79

Eau Claire returns just four players from last year's roster. Lewis Mau, Eric Effertz, Jacob Kohner and Trevor Berkley are all that remains. It will be tough to fill in the likes of Nick Craggs, Jordan Petersen and even Dustin Kalien. But, things have started off pretty well for the Blugolds with a more-than-respectable 3-1 record through two full weekends. Newcomers Adam Hjelter and Kurtis Moody have stepped in and produced very well. Make no mistake though, Mau (17.5 ppg) still leads this team. Hjelter (12 3-pters., 16.5 ppg) and Moody (15.3 ppg) have shown that they can shoot the lights out as well. Their schedule, however, has been far from intimidating with Marian, St. Scholastica and Hamline all picked low in their respective conference preseason polls. The loss to Bethel is definitely a head-scratcher as they were picked 9th in the 11-team MIAC. Bethel got hammered by Stout by 17 when the Blue Devils lead by 29 at halftime.

La Crosse (3-1)

W vs. Olivet College 94-59 (at Platteville)
W vs. Indiana-Dabney Univ. 75-59 (at Platteville)
W vs. Lakeland 89-61
L at Luther 72-70

The Eagles have two big losses in Jeff Heiden and Lucas Morrissey. They do return three starters in Luke Tweed, Lucas Collom and Branden Tice, so all is not lost. It looks like their big transfer scores are Calahan Skogman from Minnesota-Duluth and Joe Sokovich from Wheaton (IL). Skogman leads the team in scoring at 14.0 ppg while Sokovich is taking a little longer to adjust, averaging just 10 minutes a game. Not surprisingly, Collom, Tweed and Tice are 2 through 4 in scoring. Like Eau Claire, the Eagles' schedule has hardly been demanding with Lakeland being the best of the bunch (voted 2nd in the NACC). The loss to Luther is tough to swallow though. Luther is picked 4th in the IIAC this year.

Oshkosh (1-2)

L at St. Norbert 63-53
W vs. Finlandia 78-74
L vs. Clarke Univ. (IA) 73-57

It might be another long year for the Titans again. Oshkosh loses Cory Nickel, but returns Jade Royston, Dylan Wurtz and fellow starter Andre Wallace. Oshkosh also brings in 10 freshmen, along with sophomore center Nick Olson to join his brother Alex. Two freshmen have started all three games thus far, AJ Mueller and Max Schebel. Schebel leads the team in rebounds (6.7 rpg) and Mueller plays almost 19 minutes a game. As expected, Royston (14.3 ppg) and Wurtz (17 ppg) will carry the team. Things started off brightly with a very respectable loss to MWC power St. Norbert. The Titans barely got by traditional whipping boys Finlandia and then smoked by Clarke, an NAIA school that plays in the same conference as Viterbo and Mount Mercy, who beat Stout in overtime.

Platteville (4-1)

W vs. Indiana Dabney 97-64
W vs. Olivet 56-45
W vs. Augustana 67-57
W vs. Simpson 75-72
L vs. St. Olaf 68-62

The Pioneers hope to make a run for the conference championship as they return 5 of their 6 scorers. They only lose Rob Stallion. Chas Cross, Jim Stocki, Jake Manning and Eric Gerber return.  Boston Johnson has come in from a limited roll last year to start and average 24 minutes a game. 3 players average double figures in scoring with Gerber just off the pace. 4 players average 5 rebounds or better a game and 8 players average double figures in minutes. Things were going smooth for the Pioneers to start the season with wins over Indiana-Dabney, Olivet and Simpson. The Pioneers had a great win against Augustana (picked 3rd in the tough CCIW), but I was surprised about their loss to St. Olaf (5th in the top-heavy MIAC).

River Falls (1-2)

L vs. Wittenberg 69-62
W vs. Blackburn 99-47
L vs. St. Thomas 69-75

Ollie White is back from injury and he's one of only six players back from last year's team. The Falcons add junior transfer Jay Sewer along with nine other players. Sewer isn't starting but he seems to be a good spark off the bench. Grant Erickson looks like he's filling in nicely with some solid games early in the season. There's no need to ask whose team this is and I think they'll have their ups and downs this year. They have played well in losses to Wittenberg and St. Thomas but couldn't get over the hump as they blew an 11-point halftime lead against the Tommies. To help out White, returnees Ben Gresmer, Zach Smith and David Berthene will need to put up some points.

Stevens Point (3-0)

W vs. Lawrence 99-73
W vs. Edgewood 80-45
W vs. Hope College 82-62

Stevens Point has come out of the gates on fire. They are shooting at a 67% clip as a team. The Pointers shot 77% in the 2nd half against a good Hope team in their last game. Not sure when the shooting will come down to earth, but they should have the players to win anyway. Like River Falls and Ollie White, Stevens Point gets their big dog back from injury in Tyler Tillema. In the first two games, however, it wasn't Tillema getting the headlines, it was Trevor Hass. He started out 10 of 10 from behind the arc. Sooner or later someone is going to stop the Big Two, so the likes of Alex Richard, Joe Ritchay and Clayton Heuer will have to be clutch when Hass and Tillema are shut down. Look for transfer Stephen Pelkofer, Austin Ryf and Sean McGann to help out as well. The schedule only gets tougher.

Stout (2-1)

L vs. Mount Mercy 84-83 OT
W vs. Crown College 66-58
W vs. Bethel 72-55

I think Stout will pull some surprises this year with the likes of Alex Oman, Jarvis Ragland and Aaron Jenny returning to the squad. I do believe Ragland is injured now, though I don't know the extent or length of time he'll be out. More importantly, help has arrived in sharp shooting transfer Jimmy Whitehead. It's he (18 ppg), not Alex Oman (14.3) that leads the team in scoring. The Blue Devils lost a tough one to Mount Mercy, a NAIA school before rebounding against Crown College and MIAC foe Bethel. I have a feeling there's going to be some high scoring games involving Stout this year. Have no fear if they miss a shot, they have 7 guys 6'5" or taller getting to those rebounds.

Superior (0-2)

L at Minnesota-Duluth 73-58
L at Augsburg 80-73

Could be another long year for the Yellowjackets up in Canada this year. Superior loses the services of Brendan Bauer, Johnquez Brooks and Trent Davis. However, they do return their top two scorers in Jarrod Peterson and Bronson Byrne. They did bring in 6'11' freshman Dan Lochner along with freshman guard Tilyn Hollis. Hollis has fit right in and hasn't found a shot he doesn't like. 2 losses to open the season may be discouraging for the 9-player freshman class, but with Peterson, Superior can always shoot themselves back into games. Look for Aaron Corry and Zach Schradle, among others, to help out the cause.

Whitewater (3-0)

W at Carroll U. 60-38
W vs. Concordia (WI) 106-70
W vs. Hope College 83-70

Darnell Harris and Luke Knoble who? Doesn't look like Whitewater is missing a beat after losing both players in the off-season. KJ Evans has been a monster to start the season. Reggie Hearn and Steve Egan have also stepped up their game in the early goings. As usual, Quardell Young is the engine that runs things while Eric Bryson, Alex Merg, Cody Odegaard and Patrick Souter lead an experienced Warhawk team. Whitewater has made pretty easy work of their early-season schedule by topping Hope College, Carroll University (picked 2nd in MWC) and just recently beat St. Norbert College (picked 1st in MWC).

Have not been impressed with the officiating thus far in the Point/St Olaf game.  Seems to be two different games being called depending on which side of the court they are on.  St Olaf has been riding Point's guards whenever they attempt to drive, wasn't that a point of emphasis??

Either way, the discrepancy in fouls and free throw shooting is keeping the Oles in the game.  Tillema with 15 at half, including finishing the half with 3 straight 3's.  Heuer also playing well with 10.  39-37 at the break, Point up.

After leading just 39-37 at the half, #2 Stevens Point takes over the second half, beating St. Olaf 88-66.

Tillema with 30, Hass with 22, both hit 5 3's.

Falcons trail by 18 at half (41-23), beat Wartburg 63-59. W. made 10/15 3's first half, 0/6 second half. Falcon press for last 7 minutes too much for W. White, Gresmer, Erickson score 15, 14, 13 respectively. Stout plays Ashford (7-1) tonight. RF vs. Ashford tomorrow.
