Alex Oman was also hurt and didn't play. Both expected to play Saturday, according to recap.

I found it pretty funny that Dave McHugh, calling the game, mentioned repeatedly Stevens Point playing a 2-3 zone for about the first 10 minutes of the half when they literally didn't play a second of zone.

Well you might want to talk to more people... because everyone in Vegas saw a 2-3 zone for a lot of the first half. They played a bit of an extended 2-3. They started in man... changed to 2-3 for a majority of the first half... switched back to man late in the half and then played man the entire second half and overtime.

Point's off ball defense sags into the middle and can be confused with a zone. Whitman's offensive weave takes places at the top of the backcourt, thus not alot of position change and more switching of defensive assignments. Coach Semling has said many times that he is not a zone coach, referring to Jack Bennett as the master teacher in that regard.

Interestingly,  Coach Bennett was not zone adverse. We used to run a high, extended 1-3-1, especially to close out games. We also would play a 1-2-2 zone... Just ask Puget Sound or Rochester.  We held UPS to 24 points under their season average in '04... and when they came to UWSP the next year in the Sweet 16, they changed their approach completely and only scored 63 points.

The National Championship in 2005 was when Coach Neer dubbed it the pterodactyl zone because we stuck 5 guys out there 6'4"+ with long arms... ah the memories.

UW-Stout lost to Plattsburgh State 62-40 in the tournament at Daytona Beach. First half was sloppy as both teams shot poorly and turned the ball over repeatedly. Cardinals had a slim 22-19 edge at the break. Plattsburgh started the second half on an 11-2 run to open up a double digit lead at 33-21 with 13:27 left in the game. The lead would only get bigger and grew to as much as 26 at 59-33 before the Plattsburgh coach emptied his bench.

Both teams were missing a starter as the Blue Devils were without the services of leading scorer Jimmy Whitehead and the Cardinals were missing their 3rd highest scorer Jordan Moody.

Congrats to the Cards. Faced tough competition on a neutral floor, from 2 good conferences, 2 days in a row. Hopefully Moody is still "MIA" on Jan 24th!

So, d-mac,

Why did the Whitman coach blow up and get two techs after Tillema's layup in OT?

Also, Platteville getting outrebounded 39-20? Ouch!

WARHAWKS: 85
Edgewood: 53

Neither team started very well and Edgewood had a couple of early leads   A jumper from Quardell Young at the 11:30 mark put the WARHAWKS up 10-8 and lead eventually grew to double digits and ended 33-23 at the half.  Reggie Hearn was a perfect 6-6 from the floor and led both teams with 12 points.  The WARHAWKS started the second half with a 7-0 run and midway through the period KJ Evans took over scoring 9 straight points as the lead grew until it reached it's highest point 82-46 with just under five minutes remaining.

The WARHAWKS out rebounded Edgewood 46-34 and out shot them 46% to 37%.  Evans led all scorers with 20 points and rounded out another double-double with 11 rebounds.  Hearn finished with 15 points.  Young had game highs of 5 assists and 3 steals.

On the previous play, with the score tied, Whitman attacked and a Whit player went up for a shot and the ball popped up... don't remember who the defender was (I think it was Ryf or Hass).

The Whit bench thought it was a foul (the play was on the wing right in front of them). FWIW, from the perspective of Dave (where ever he was broadcasting from...) it looked like a pretty blatant foul too.

I thought it looked like a clean strip  ;)

Point looks soft.  I wonder if they can win another game.  :(

Pointers win 66 - 64 over North Central.  Tillema hits the game winner with under 5 seconds to go and then Note Central misses a 3 at the buzzer.  Tyler with 30 Haas chips in 20.

Happy New Year everyone.  Amazed the Pointers are still undefeated, given their schedule.  PS If you are going out tonight, plan ahead.  Hate for you to meet my collegues on unfriendly terms, or worse yet, me, tomorrow AM.

Very hard to believe Stout would lose to Millikin who earlier in the season lost to perennial power Principia.  Did review the box score which had Stout committing 28 turnovers, hard to beat anyone coughing it up that much.  Don't know what's up with Oman who didn't start, played just 16 minutes and scored 4 points.  He's had a very inconsistent season to date - I thought he'd be one of the top players  in the WIAC this year and it just hasn't happened yet.  I do recall him being injured earlier and that's probably a major factor.

Based on what I've seen lately either live or via video streams, I don't see anybody in the WIAC beating Point.

I don't know the extent of Oman's injury either, but I have said this before.  He is soft.  I don't know if he doesn't know or doesn't care how good he could be.  And it's not like I am talking behind his back here.  I told him this to his face after the Whitewater win where he played brilliantly.  I can not figure him out.  I think he is driving Ed crazy.

A lot of nice words on the Pointers in the CCIW room after their win against North Central if you wanna take a look.
