Dear MR. McHugh, I want to personally apologize for not reading every word posted on D3Hoops. However, a person with your credentials could surely post something better than "::palm to forehead::". Your V-8 reference to my post lacks professionalism. Maybe you were just trying to be funny instead of insulting, I really do not care. I have not posted in 7 or 8 years because of a post like yours and will not post again. Good luck just the same.

Did you mean months?

Come on, Stormy, lighten up a little bit. Even I don't always have time to read the previous page and post something that has already been said. It's not a big deal.

Umm, finally caught up to them. Going up 6 with 31 seconds left may have made it a little easier at the end.

Maybe we need to get Richie Incognito in here to toughen this crowd up a little bit! I'll send him a text message.

Point: 76
WARHAWKS: 81  OT

Perhaps it is I and not Massey who should buy a clue.  I honestly didn't think we could pull it off but there is nothing that makes me happier than being mistaken on this one.  It was an electric atmosphere.  The Pointers brought a large contingency of fans.  Our students and the community turned out in mass.  The gym was packed and louder than I've heard it in years.

The game started with the two teams exchanging baskets and each holding leads of a couple of points for the first five minutes before Quardell Young's driving layup gave the WARHAWKS a lead that they would hold for the rest of the half.  The WARHAWKS gradually built the lead until it reached double figures (11) at the eleven minute mark.  Point would reduce it to single digits twice but Eric Bryson's three-pointer with just under five minutes push the lead back into double figures and it grew to a high of 16 points before Point rallied and reduced it to 12, 39-27 at the intermission.  Offensively the WARHAWKS shot 65% from the floor and defensively played with a lot of intensity limiting the Pointers to just two three-point attempts.  Bryson was 6-7, including a pair of three-pointers, from the floor and led all scorers with 14 points.  Steve Egan came off the bench to add 8 points and Hearn added 8 points.  The two teams combined to shoot just 7 total free throws each without a miss.  Trevor Hass's 5 points led Stevens Point while four other Pointers added 4 points each.

It was the Pointers who came out with the intensity in the second half and in the first three minutes ran off thirteen consecutive points to tie the game 40-40.  Young answered with a pair of three-pointers for the WARHAWKS but the Pointers answered that with a 7-0 taking a one point lead with thirteen and half minutes remaining.  After that the lead changed hands six times over the next six minutes until Joe Ritchay drilled a three-pointer putting the Pointers on top 56-54.  The Pointers would hold that lead, increasing it to a high of five points, until Young's driving layup tied the game 68-68 with thirteen seconds.  Young missed the following free throw and the WARHAWKS defense stifled the Pointers last chance attempt sending the game into overtime.

Tyler Tillema opened the overtime with a three-pointer despite being well defended.  Hearn answered with a layup for the WARHAWKS and the two teams would exchange the lead and be tied twice in the first three minutes of overtime.  KJ Evans' three-pointer tied the game 74-74  and after the Pointers missed a shot Evans sank one of two free throws putting the WARHAWKS on top 75-74.  Richtay answered with a basket for the Pointers but Evans was fouled and made both free throws giving the WARHAWKS the lead for good.  After that Evans and Alex Merg each made a pair of free throws and the Pointers missed all three of their final three-point attempts though all were heavily defended.

The WARHAWKS finished shooting 53% from the floor and committing a season low 4 turnovers.  They outscored the Pointers 46-26 in the paint.  Young finished with 19 points and added a game high 4 assists and a block.  Bryson finished with 17, Hearn with 16 and Evans 15 as well as a team high 6 rebounds.

The Pointers shot 52% from the floor.  Tillema led the way with 19 points.  Richtay added 18, Stephen Pelkofer 11 and Hass 10.  Led by Heuer's game high 9 rebounds the Pointers finished with a 32-23 rebounding advantage.

The irony of substitute head coach Nick Bennett beating undefeated Stevens Point is just so juicy.

If anyone thinks that Jack Bennett had any mixed emotions watching that basketball game, they have never had a son coaching and they have never had to watch another guy take your spot (Bob Semling), do well, and not feel some sense of "Well, we were pretty good too, remember"!  Congratulations to Jack and Nick.  I'm sure Jack went home a very happy man, no matter what he wore to the game. ;)

Looks like there were four pretty close, exciting games last night.

Point @ Whitewater was a great, great game. Exciting, intense. Both teams had an opportunity to win it in regulation.

The game really was a game of inches.

Here's a hand full of plays that, if they went the other way, could have affected the outcome.

At the end of the first half, Point was holding for the last shot but had an opportunity and scored with :06 left.  That gave Quardell Young enough time to drive the length of the court and score just before the buzzer.

KJ Evans' technical - Not sure that this directly sparked Point's 13-0 run to tie the game or whether it would have happened anyway... but it did trigger a 5 point possession for SP and after two more stops and 3's, the game was tied less than 3 minutes into the second half.

With 3:18 left in regulation, Coach Semling was awareded a timeout... but he was awarded the timeout AFTER the ball was inbounded. Nick Bennett was not happy about that, and he had every right to be.  Now, that being said, the refs were "late" in calling a few other timeouts, and it was only on Point's end... maybe SP had difficulties calling the timeouts, but I specifically saw (and it was obvious, I was sitting in the last row) Coach Semling at one point tell all three refs that they wanted a timeout after every basket.  I'm not sure how much of an impact that actually had on the game... because the clock was stopped, and, if I recall correctly, different personel were put into the game.

The charge call on Alex Richard (11:00 left in the 2nd) and the charge call on Clayton Heuer with 2:59 in OT - Both of these were picture perfect examples of blatant flops. Based on how much contact was going on inside (from both teams), in each situation, it was a slight bump by an offensive player in the post that resulted in patented fall on your butt, hands in the air, and yell as you fall variety. But the bald ref under the basket got suckered into the call both times. It was amazing to me that such a touch call was made, when so much additional contact had gone on inside for the entire game.

On the other hand, the block call on Clayton Heuer (not sure if it was the foul at 2:36 in OT or 1:00 in OT, I think it was 1:00) very easily could have been called a charge, but it was not. I didn't have a great angle on the view (it was on the WW bench side of the lane and I was sitting on the opposite side) but Evans was going hard to the basket and Heuer appeared set.

One more charge call... the call at 1:47, where Quardell Young drove, tossed up a floater, and got a charge foul, but they counted the basket, was absolutely the right call. He let go of the ball BEFORE the charge and the stripes got it right by getting together and making the correct call.

Free throws, free throws, free throws!  Point had an opportunity to seal the game when, predictably, Whitewater fouled them, down 3, with :31 left. Tillema hit 1/2. Point +4. Quardell Young hit a 3. Point +1. Ritchay got fouled, hit 1/2. Point +2. Quardell Young drove and scored with the foul. Tied. But, he missed the FT and Ritchay got a (bad) shot at the buzzer that could have won it.

What a great move by Whitewater to strike QUICKLY after Ritchay's FTs instead of holding for a final shot. It caught Point's defense unawares and they were out of position and allowed Young to drive end to end... again... and score.

Heuer's missed layup with :29 left in OT, WW+1. That would have put Point up 1... but instead Point had to foul, and that was ultimately a game. SP got exactly what they wanted... a point blank shot, and it was overlaid. I think Heuer was probably expecting contact (Young got a block against Heuer with :59 left in regulation on a shot that would have put Point up 5 instead of 3 with just under a minute) but none came.

This was a very physical, heavyweight boxing match of a game... but it was played pretty cleanly.

SP had 7 turnovers in the first half (WW had 3), but in the second half, Point had just 3 and WW 1 (Point had one more on Heuer's charge in the OT). WW's passes were crisp and clean all game and they seemed to get great passing angles. Point's were a bit less-so... numerous fumbles of the ball and tipped balls, brought on by Whitewater's ball pressure. I thought WW was a bit handsy at times... but they were allowed to get away with it, so they went with it. The Bible says that love can cover a multitude of sins, but in basketball, quickness can cover a multitude of sins... times where Whitewater took a chance and got out of position, they were able to get back more often than not.

Overall, it was a very entertaining game and a great atmosphere.

Let me tell you how much I hate that rule. There's no reason a team should be able to call a timeout after their own made basket. Once the ball goes through the hoop, they are not in possession anymore, they shouldn't have the ability to stop the other team's transition with a timeout. That's one rule that's not talked about often, but should be changed.
