Mr. Ypsi

Even though this is IWU's 6th trip in 19 years, it will be Mrs. Y's and my first trip to Salem.  (In 2012, BOTH the men and women were in the FF, so I decided to stay home and watch both on the web - good choice as the men lost on Friday while the women won it all!  Before then I was still teaching and didn't have the time off.)

If any regulars are going to be in Salem, look me up (it's always nice to meet actual people attached to poster names).  I'm 5'8", glasses, short grey hair, and will be wearing a dark green IWU sweatshirt with white framed letters and a black IWU cap with white lettering.  If too warm for the sweatshirt, I will wear a red t-shirt with a loon, and the caption 'Loonatic University'.  (If it is cooler than predicted, I will also be wearing a purple jacket, but that is NOT in support of you guys!  It is the colors of Ypsi HS; my older son was given it for helping out with their lacrosse team, and passed it on to me. ;))

We will also be at Mac and Bob's in downtown Salem pre-game (and perhaps post-game).

Emory switched defenses alternating between a 1-3-1 which at times looked like a 2-3 zone and a man defense.  UT-Dallas did the same thing though they stayed in the 1-3-1 more.  Both teams extended it way out to nearly mid-court.  It took a while to adjust but once we did we did just fine.  Against UT-D Cody Odegaard got hot and hit 5 or 7 three point attempts.  That opened things up and then our dribble penetration was effective in getting Evans and Hearn short shots.  We didn't shoot as well against Emory but they were so spread out that we were able to dribble penetrate, particularly on the baseline, and get easy shots.  Other teams in conference play have zoned us and though we'd probably prefer they man up we've been able to adjust.

On behalf of the rest of the WIAC, we apologize for inconveniencing you.  ;D

I was fully expecting Point to advance so I could have a heated discussion with my wife about coming out there for the Final Four. Alas, Point loses on Friday, saving me, not only the discussion, but about $600 in travel, gas, lodging, food and other things!

Good luck to Whitewater!

BTW, when is Whitewater going to get a hockey team? Point had the men's and women's basketball teams and the women's hockey team all in the Final Four the same weekend many years ago.  This year, the men's hockey team is back in the Final Four...I guess it's only a matter of time before Whitewater gets a hockey team, or two.

In two words, probably never.  I think we used to have a club team years ago.  I don't know what happened to it though.  The nearest facility is in Janesville who now has boys and girls high school teams and the Janesville Jets which in addition to the city's use makes it difficult to schedule.  Then there is that whole Title IX thing.  I just don't see it happening.

No need to apologize, Greek.  We're not complaining about how the season has played out so far.  ;D

Beloit has a rink. UWW could play their games there.

La Crosse had a hockey team for a few years in the eighties.  It died due to several factors.  The most colorful was that a player beat up the coach.  Probably the biggest factor was the cost.  A few students wanted the sport and railroaded it through the Student Senate.  It turned out to have little real support.

We had a discussion about UWSP and zone back in December after the D3hoops.com Classic. If I recall correctly, UWSP was sagging so far and switching enough that their man looked like zone to me and Dave. :)

Duh. Just add two teams. ;)

At a college I once worked at there was a Board of Trustees member who was a huge hockey guy. About every third meeting he'd bring up wanting to establish a hockey team.

Eventually, our VP brought along a "start up costs" document that detailed all the money they'd need to lay out for equipment, ice time, insurance, travel, facility upgrades, etc. As the board members let those numbers soak in, he then said, "Oh, and to help us stay Titile IX compliant we'd need to add women's hockey too. So double every amount you see on that sheet."

The guy never brought it up again.

By my count, the women have two more athletic programs than the men (9 vs. 11).

So UWW would still be in compliant to Title IX by just adding men's hockey right?

I didn't realize UWW got rid of their hockey (club) program. When I was there I remember their biggest rival was U of Illinois. From what I heard, a lot of fights broke out between the two club teams.

No, Title IX isn't based on the number of teams but rather the number of participation opportunities those teams afford.  Because the football roster is as large as it is and no female sport offers the same number of participation opportunities there will be more female sports to balance out the number of participation opportunities.  I believe that the ratio of male/female students at an institution is also involved.  I know at least one program in WHITEWATER (i.e. womens basketball) carries a larger number of players on the roster to help bring the school into compliance.

And to keep going,

Straight participation numbers are just 1 of a 3 prong test to meet Title IX compliance. Schools must be able to demonstrate that they meet at least ONE of these tests. They do not have to meet all three.

1. Provide athletic participation opportunities that are substantially proportionate to the undergraduate enrollment. (ie, is the ratio of women/men participating in athletics approximately similar (within 4% I think) to the women/men entire ratio of the student body. Similar quality/quantity of facilities, resources and budget also fall into this test).

2. Demonstrate a continual expansion of athletic opportunities for the underrepresented sex. (Have they proven they have a history of expanding opportunities for women)

3. Fully accommodate the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex. (Has the school proven that there are no other opportunities the female student body wants or demands.)

Like BW said, the proportionality test is always a challenge for schools with football. Many schools force women's sports to carry larger rosters (or limit men's sports) to try and reach it. It's at least part of the reason for the 100-man football roster limit, although budget constraints is by far the bigger reason.

Congrats to both Chas Cross and Tyler Tillema for making the all-star game roster. Obviously Tyler would like to be in Salem for another reason, but this will have to do.

I'm not a basketball fan at all but being a UWW fan I just wanted to drop by over here and wish both mens and womens teams good luck in their games ahead. Hope they can pull it off and bring some more championships back to the state and school!  :)
