Rico 21

...quite possibly one of THE most entertaining games yet, taken in by the Rico clan last night!

Wait a minute, could it be...   yes, that was BDB and Rico 21 using up a few seconds of their 15 minutes of fame on SportsScene 13 last night...    we were the good looking ones shown after Farmer's dunk at the end of the game!!

I don't think you'll have a problem just picking up a ticket when you get here OS.  You might want to come a little bit early but there should be tickets.

Unlike the Eau Claire game this time the WARHAWKS started slowy with a pair of turnovers and a missed jumper.   LaCrosse took a minute to get out of the gate too missing a layup and three point attempt before Chris Fehrenbach hit a three pointer to put them on top and start the scoring.  The WARHAWKS  got on the board on the next possession when Melvin Williams put back an offensive rebound.  LaCrosse maintained a small lead until just under the 14 minute mark when WHITEWATER assumed the lead 10-9 on a Jeremy Manchester layup.  LaCrosse responded with a basket but Manchester drained a three-pointer and the WARHAWKS took a lead they would expand to as many as nine.  With Joe Werner on the bench in foul trouble LaCrosse was game and cut the lead to one, twice, before a pair of Melvin Williams free throws gave WHITEWATER a 33-30 lead at the half.

WHITEWATER got the board first in the second half when Anthony Mlachnik hit a three-pointer and did built the lead to nine in the first six and half minutes.  But Joe Werner, after a scoreless first half, was beginning to assert himself in the low post and from the free throw line and he kept LaCrosse from ever falling too far behind.  However the WARHAWKS were responding with inside baskets from Rob Perry, Andy Freund and free throws from Melvin Williams to maintain a lead between two and seven points as the game wound down.   WHITEWATER had a chance to put the game away but missed the front end of double bonus and after the second was successfull the score stood 70-67 with 33 seconds remaining which left plenty of time for Luke Hommen to hit a huge three-pointer, only his second basket of the night, to tie the game.  But 18 ticks remained on the clock when the WARHAWKS called time out set up their last shot and most everyone in the gym knew who would take it.  Wasting no time getting  Manchester the ball the senior brought it up the floor and dribbled down the time.  Finally with 7-8 seconds to go Manchester made his move and capped it off with an incedible, off balance, defense in your face shot from the free throw line with just four tenths of a second remaing.  WARHAWKS win 72-70.

The WARHAWK bigs had big nights as Andy Freund led with a 16 point/10 rebound double-double.  Rob Perry put down 16 points and 7 rebounds.  LaCrosse had major problems matching up with him.  Perry may be one of most improved players in the league start of season to now.   Williams only took one three-point attempt but went 10-11 from the free throw line by constantly attacking the basket and finished with a 16 point/7 rebound night.   Manchester finished with 10 points/5 rebounds.   WHITEWATER won the battle of the boards 39-33 including 15 offensive rebounds.

Joe Werner had a huge second half scoring all 20 of his points.  Joe Bemis did a nice job in the first half in his place.  Conigliaro was held to just 4 three-point attempts as Williams, Mlachnik and Giovanni Riley chased him around all night.  He did finish with 14 points but controlling him was a big factor in the game particuarly when Werner took off in the second half.  Both teams handled the ball pretty well with just 22 combined turnovers.

LaCrosse had a great year.  They're a good team and it's a shame the loss probably put them out of the NCAA tournament.  But it would have been at our expense so I've got to be honest and say I'm  not going to lose any sleep over it. ;)  Congrats to Coach K, he's revitalizing LaCrosse men's basketball and that's a good thing for the WIAC.

Having bested the third time is a charm twice with wins over Eau Claire and LaCrosse now the WARHAWKS have to prove it true against Stout.   It should be a heck of game and we still figure we have to win it to keep playing.

Stoutguy, I know you'll be coming down.
BDB, you coming or staying to watch the women.

REDMENFAN

Man, something must be in the water at UWW, Baseball champs, football runner-ups, and what sounds like a very solid b-ball team this year. Just have a quick question for all you Stout backers out there. I see that Terry Farmer is having a very solid season. I went to the same high school as him, and he was a very solid player, but he always played the 4 or 5. He was undersized, but still got the job done. I believe he is playing the 2 guard at Stout, which really surprised me because from for the 4 years I saw him play I never really got to see him dribble alot or defend on the perimeter. Has he always played guard at Stout, and how is his outside shot, dribbling etc.

stoutguy

No, Redmenfan, Terry is still playing the 4, he is still undersized, and believe me, he is still getting the job done.  He is unselfish, has a great vertical jump, an outstanding shooter from 10 feet and in, and one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  Terry Farmer will be voted Stout's MVP.  Count on it.

BDB made the sports? Funny stuff.

I saw the highlights on the ABC affiliate but they were short and lame.

I figured SportScene would do a better job, but the Olympic coverage put channel 13's local news past my bedtime.  :)

I agree, stoutguy.

Terry Farmer should be given strong consideration for 1st team all conference as well.

He has to be nominated first.  Nate Tempeler ring a bell. ;)  Nonemacher is a shoo-in and I would think that Eddie figures he's got more than one all conference player on this team.  Farmer is deserving.

BTW, each coach has submitted his list of all conference nominees for votingalready.  Now each coach will rank the top 10, without voting for their own players, and those 10 players who total the highest rankings will be the team.  Any others who received at least one vote will be honorable mention.   If a player isn't nominated by his coach he can't be ranked.

Then the top three ranked players will be voted on a second time and one who gets the highest ranking will be player of the year.  Right now I see the main contenders as Joe Werner, Jacob Nonemacher, Jeremy Manchester and Leonard Cobb.  I think Superior's dismall conference season may sink Cobb though.  I picked Werner a week ago but if I had to bet today I'd probably bet on Nonemacher.  He's certainly deserving but honestly I hope Jeremy Manchester squeaks it out.

I think Sunday is the deadline for the coaches to return their ballots and the POY voting is right afterward so we should know the team by Monday or possibly Tuesday depending on how quickly it's published.

BDB, you didn't answer my question.  You coming or staying.  I've got plenty of extra room if you needed a place overnight.

BW,

Sorry, I have been behind all day. It's like a basketball holiday in Menomonie today, and everyone, including Eddie and stoutguy have been taking all my time. It's been tough to get any work done. Not that I am complaining.  :)

I am staying to see the women's team along with 200O or more other folks. Last night was so loud that Eddie told me the players couldn't hear him in the huddle. It was wild.

I will keep up with you and stoutguys game via stoutguy on the radio. Should be a fun day.

And yes, Nate Templer does ring a bell.  ;)

Thanks for the offer, BW.

And speaking of coaches, the one guy I would love to see join our conference in the next few year's is LU's John Tharp.  Now, he would add some flavor to our group.  He is fun to watch and he coaches his tail off.  What do you think Titan2000?  Ready to give him up and let him battle the big boys?  Regarding you and your karma points which are now approaching negative 2000, I hope you are not still getting flack about those "rats".  After all, it was TVD, not you, who started that "rat" stuff.

I am not worried about my karma, although I didn't start the rat or Super Bowl comments; those musings were initiated by Titan Ted.  I did, however, attack the Pointers aggressively and I apologized for that.  My wife won't sleep with me until my karma gets back to -50 so any help you can provide would be good for my marraige.  Being named as a lifetime member of the NRO did get me a little petting, that's it.

On to more important topics:

I am optimistic that the powers that be in Appleton and at LU will figure out a way to keep Mr. Tharp here a long, long time.  If you get him in the WIAC, he will be a winner.

I sometimes think, having been there, that WIAC fans and coaches feel they have some upper hand on teams from places like the MWC.  Recent events appear to suggest that they are a lot closer than was thought.

It would be a good thing to get a more formal tourney going, maybe a format like the ACC/Big 10 challenge.  I suspect the WIAC schools would be against that as it would create in region loss potential and it might be above them.   I would love to see it as I have enjoyed the LU/Oshkosh, LU/Platteville and Oshkosh/Carroll games this year and past and think it would be great.

What do you think ?

T2K,

Are you sure that Mrs. T2K isn't Posting Up and keeping you below -50 k?   ;)  :D

Sounds like somehing Mrs. BDB might try.   :(  :P

After a few years of harsh criticism i will be the first to admit how thoroughly impressed I was with Coach Kloebl this year.  I only made a few games but man did they play tough, disciplined, and a team concept..........something I haven't seen in Lax in my four years here..........Props to him and the job he did with the kids and I hope(i can't believe I am saying this) he stays at UWL for a long time

I don't think that WHITEWATER would mind a WIAC/MWC tournament matchup at all nor that we would see it as beneath us.  We've played Carroll regularly and we've tried twice to reinitiate our rivalry with Beloit College but like the first time, we win a few and they won't play us any longer.  I know we've played SNC in the past but they don't seem anxious to play us again either.

It's just a guess but my hunch about such a tournament is that it would be the MWC schools who would have less interest but, obviously, I don't know that for fact.   Wouldn't mind seeing it though.

I'm really hoping that things can work out so we can get a shot at Lawrencebut that's way down the road and there are more important things to focus on first.

Ok, BDB, good luck in that women's game.

I've only been kidding about the rat thing.  I think it's hilarious and perhaps characteristic of Ted to refer to his fan base as rats.  I also thought it ironic that he talked about the team putting it all together and Feburary being the month you have to play well and then went out and bombed with all that talent.

But it's nothing personal and I know that 2K didn't start it.  What's the world comming to if a WARHAWKGUY can't have a little fun at the expense of a Titan and visa-versa?  ;D
