I'm guessing Jerrel Harris. 2010-2011 was his sophomore year. He was listed 5'10" 150 lbs, smaller than Young's 6'0" 180.

RedHotFalcon--There's not one WIAC player who's D1. Quardell Young, WW, is the closest, and he, as good as he is, could not play D1, except perhaps as a bench warmer. Too small.

About 4-5 years ago Point had an excellent guard, equal to or better than QY but bigger, who transferred to a D2  team in the southeast after his sophomore year. I lost track of him, but maybe GT can fill us in on him. Rich Melzer of RF, the best we've ever had and the player of the year in the WIAC as a senior, would have been a good D2 player, but would have sat the bench at Wisconsin.

Yep, Jerrel Harris.  He went on to St. Leo.

http://saintleolions.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/releases/201404014o9tlf

He averaged 19.5 ppg as a senior, 14.9 ppg as a junior. All-conference both seasons, all region as a senior, Honorable Mention All-American

Marcus Ruh also followed Lance Randall to St. Leo. 13.2 ppg as a junior, 16.6 ppg as a senior.

Ruh's accolades are pretty amazing.

Not only was he a third team All-American, All-Conference, male athlete of the year at St. Leo as a senior, he was academic all-everything (at St. Leo, in the conference, even Academic All-American of the year in D-II). He was the School of business student of the year.

In other words, both of these players, who were All-Conference WIAC players (Harris First-Team, Ruh HM in '10-11), were able to excel in Division II, and on the national level.

Antone Byrd also transferred to a D-II school after '10-'11. He went to Central State in Ohio. It isn't clear if he has been injured, but according to the Central State website, he played in 4 games last year (avg 11.5 ppg) and has played in 8 games this year (avg 8.1 ppg).

I think that people just assume because players play in Division III, that they couldn't cut it at D-II or D-I. This isn't the case. There really isn't THAT much of a difference between them. Now, I'm not talking about the tip top of the bunch. D-I lottery picks who play for a year then go to the league are in a class by themselves.

But the difference between a D-I, a D-II, and a D-III player is the potential that they showed coming out of high school. Once they're IN college, the sky is the limit, no matter the division. The amount of work that a player puts in determines the type of college basketball player that they are. Just look at Nick Bennett. He came out of SPASH as a tall lanky kid and he worked and worked and worked his way to become an All-American and win two National Titles.

Now, D-II and D-I players have more resources and more coaching (in addition to sport-specific strength and conditioning coaches many times), but it's certainly possible that a D-III player could get to a higher level than a D-II or D-I player.

If you look at the over-all basketball TEAM rankings in Massey, the highest ranked team is St. Thomas. They're ranked 308 (right behind WI Milwaukee and East Carolina, two middling D-I teams). There are 42 D-II teams in front of them. The top D-II team is Indianapolis, at 76.

I think that people really underestimate how bad  the lowest levels of D-II and D-I are, though. The bottom D-II school is Miles, at 960. The bottom D-I school is Central Arkansas at 783 (They were NAIA when Scottie Pippen was there.... but they haven't won a game this season).

Devean George played at Augsburg before having an 11 year career in the NBA. Augsburg was good in those years, but they didn't win a title. Terry Porter and Tim Naegeli both got drafted into the NBA out of Point (during the NAIA years). Porter had an incredibly long NBA career. Jack Sikma played at Illinois Wesleyan (when NAIA) before a long NBA career.

And countless D-III players have played professionally overseas. And there are many more who COULD have played overseas if they so desired, but decided to stay stateside and start their "real" lives (career, getting married, etc).

UW-W wins 65-64 at Platteville.  Quardell Young scores on a layup with 8 seconds left. After a UW-P timeout, Young blocked a 3 point shot attempt from the top of the key. According to the UW-W website, he blocked the ball back towards half court so he got a pretty good piece of it. Q is flat out dominant this year. Tonight: 26 points on 9-15 shooting, although he did have 5 turnovers with only one assist tonight.  UW-P must have played an aggressive game tonight. They hit 20 of 23 free throws and UW-W attempted only five. All in all, it sounds like it was a great game. That's 11 straight for UW-W.

The ball got partially blocked and ballooned into the middle of the lane. It was K.J. Evans (I believe) who swatted it the rest of the way towards half court.

That's how it went don.

Must have been a rare error by uwwsports.com.  They have REALLY done a nice job lately, though!

déjà vu

Quardell Young scores on a layup with 8 seconds remaining. Following a La Crosse time out, he cleanly blocks a short jumper attempt from the baseline, right of the lane, maybe 10 feet from the basket...with 1 second left...buzzer...ball game...UWW wins by 1.

Hey Brian Carroll and chmarx,

What's going on in La Crosse? Wholesale changes! Zuiker, de Bruin and Cameron (didn't even play, hurt?) out and Cummings, Jankowski and Wheeler in. And we aren't talking about token starts. The latter two play 30+ minutes! And Trent Schmidt hasn't played the last two games either.

GT: Schmidt has a shoulder injury. In this morning's La Crosse Tribune, Coach K expressed a desire to play some of the fresman at WW. I don't know the specifics with the other players, but perhaps it is time to look to next season, after a tough run this year.

LaCrosse: 67
WARHAWKS: 68

For the second time in a week it was Quardell Young's heroics which extended the WARHAWKS winning streak to twelve games.  After taking a pass from Xzavier Moanau Young drove the right side of the lane for the game winning basket with eight seconds remaining.  But Young's heroics didn't end there.  After the WARHAWKS called time out the Eagles' Johnny Coenen drove the right side pulling up for an eight foot jumper only to have Young block the shot causing it to fall harmlessly as the buzzer sounded.

The Eagles came out of the gate with a young lineup and drilling three point shots.  After a couple of ties and lead changes in the game's initial four minutes the Eagles took a 13-11 lead and gradually built it to eight points on a couple of occassions.  With the Eagles leading 32-24 with three and half minutes remaining Young  scored the half's final five points leaving the WARHAWKS down by three 32-29 at the intermission.  Young's 11 points and 3 assists and KJ Evans 8 points  and 5 rebounds paced the WARHAWKS who shot 46% from the floor.  The Eagles were led by Jared Staege who went 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and totaled 11 points.  The WARHAWKS dominated in the paint outscoring the Eagles 18-8 but the Eagles countered that by going 8 or 19 from beyond the arc.  The Eagle's maintained a 1-3 point lead for the first couple of minutes of the second half until Cody Odegaard's three pointer gave the WARHAWKS a 36-34 lead.  That was followed by a pair of ties before KJ Evans put the WARHAWKS up 39-38.  The WARHAWKS would maintain a single digit lead which reached a high of eight points 58-50 with just under eight minutes to play before the Eagles 8-0 run tied game 58-58.  KJ Evans free throw regained the lead 59-58 and WARHAWKS gradually took it six points 66-60 with 2:49 remaining.  Once again the Eagles rose to the occasion scoring the game's next seven points and leading 67-60 on Sean Wheeler's pair of free throws with twenty seconds to play.  But Young would not be denied.

Young: 21 points , 7 assists, 1 block, 4 steals
Evans: 17 points, 8 rebounds
Odegaard: 11 points, 5 rebounds
Team: 53% from the floor

LaCrosse:
Jared Staege: 18 points (5 of 6 three pointers), 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Sean Wheeler: 17 points, 3 assists
Johnny Coenen: 13 points
Tom Jankowski: 12 points
Team: 13 of 26 three point baskets

FRED - Not every year do we have D1 guys. In the history of the WIAC there certainly are players who should have played higher. Yes, I'm sure there is a program out there at the scholarship level that would love a Q right now. Doesn't have to be Duke. Even guys like Terry Porter, Merril Brunson, Tim Dworak, Rich Melzer, Matt Goodwin, Tony Many, DJ Marsh, Jeff Skemp, Jake Smith and Chris Davis would have made some scholarship rosters and coaches look like brilliant recruiters. I think Rich would have done just fine at UWW. He certainly held his own at the ProAm and during his tryouts with the NBA. Not ready after high school, but certainly all improved players who took their games to another level.

Mr. Ypsi

Has anyone tallied up how many games Quardell Young has won with last second heroics?  Without those, UWW would not even be top 10, much less trying to hold on to #1!
