John, I'm well aware of the conversation. It is still two teams. 12 and 9. Even I agree that's too many. All 5 Pointer starters on the two teams? Really? Nearly half the starting lineups are All-Conference (21 of 45).

I don't think that there's anything wrong with Alma, per se. I just think that it's about a zillion miles from nowhere.

Actually it is only 18 miles from nowhere.  Mt. Pleasant (the town that mis-named itself twice) is just that distance north up the Interstate.  Though, since Central Michigan is regarded as a party school, my guess would be that many Alma students head that direction every weekend! ;)

OK, that made me laugh out loud for sure. So you went 38 years between attending D3 events? That's pretty epic. For those of us late to this party, did you break the streak before or after you began posting on D3boards? I know it's probably been awhile for Bobo, but he's got that living in Asia excuse working for him.

Chances are the streak would have permanently gone unbroken except for this site.  I had pretty much forgotten about small college sports; for all but the most local schools, coverage was (and is) so poor that I was totally unaware that IWU won the men's bball national title in 1997 until the alumni mag came some months later!  I first posted here about 2001, but didn't finally break the streak of personal (non)attendance until December 2008 (and I had graduated back in 1970).  It's a heckuva long drive from Ypsilanti MI to Bloomington, and until I met some posters from Hope hadn't taken advantage of MIAA possibilities (the nearest school, Adrian, is just 40-45 miles).  I'd probably do somewhat better if my favorite sport (bball) didn't happen when the travel weather is the worst!

You're right, Greg (as usual, confound it!).  Wheaton also hosted the CCIW/MIAA challenge in 2008, but the gap-breaking was 2004 - I certainly remember Mr. Draayer's falling-out-of-bounds 3s from approximately downtown Chicago!

So the gap was ONLY 34 years and change! :D  I followed up the CCIW/MIAA challenge on Friday with an alumni/JV game, then Chicago @ IWU on Saturday.  Great weekend!  I first met Greg, Q, iwumichigan, sac, FDF, 'Hiker Jim', and others whose names I've forgotten.

So, I'm kind of unclear as to when you learned about the 1997 national title. How and when, again? :)

It's amazing how quickly we get spoiled by technology!  I get mildly irritated when the live stats and internet broadcast at out of sync.  Only eleven years ago, IWU won the national title - I didn't even know that they had until an alumni mag showed up several months later! :-[

It was very difficult to maintain interest in the CCIW after graduating (and moving to Michigan) before d3sports.com and video-streaming.  I didn't even know that IWU won the national title in 1997 until the alumni magazine showed up several months later! :P

AMEN!!  When IWU won the national title in men's basketball in 1997, I didn't even know it until months later when I got the alumni magazine (I live far enough away that IWU doesn't even appear in the agate in newspapers here).

What happened to Trine is that once-in-a-lifetime qb Eric Watt graduated.  The second bolded sentence should tell you all you need to know about the overall importance of d3 athletics - you are obviously a football fan, yet had no idea what happened to a d3 school in Indiana!  (Don't feel bad - prior to the founding of this site, d3 coverage was SO bad that I did not know my alma mater (IWU) won the men's basketball national title (1997) until I got the alumni magazine several months later!)  The ONLY similarity between d1 and d3 sports is that they play by the same rules on the field - consequences for enrollment, alumni contributions, etc., while debatable for d1 (some studies suggest it is more an 'urban legend' than real), it has little to nothing to do with d3.

Yeah, "probably the best ..." was a stretch.  "Possibly" or "in the discussion for .." would have been far more prudent.  I'll blame d3hoops.com for that! As I posted elsewhere, I wasn't even aware that IWU won the walnut-and-bronze in 1997 until I got an alumni  magazine a few months later; by 2001 I was listening to the FF games.  Nearly everything from 1971 thru 2001 is a blur! ::)

Elsewhere, indeed. :)

Now, Pat, are you gonna start complaining that I give d3hoops.com credit too often?! ;D

If I were advising a writer or broadcaster, I'd tell them to find another way to tell the same story rather than tell it the same way repeatedly. The wording just jumps out. :)

At least he's consistent! With the recent news of certain reporters embellishing their stories, it could have changed from

"read it in the alumni mag several months later"

to

"I was on the bus with the team to Salem"

to

"I am Bryan Crabtree!"

Well, I said my last text was going to be my last on the "Pat Miller" sideline stuff and it was, but boy, I was really taken to task by very some very passionate WW people.  I think when I hear "Voice" getting on me I must have stepped over my boundary line.  No more for me.  Good luck to you guys but I don't think luck has much to do with it.  You are good enough to win it all.  My apologies if I stepped over the line.  BW knows, as we have talked about it in the past, that I sometimes like to stir the pot.  I think the pot boiled over!

I can, in fact, attest to that SG.  Despite this apparent character flaw Stoutguy is a pretty decent dude and I know for a fact that he respects Pat Miller and his WARHAWKS program.

StoutGuy--I will keep them on their heels.   ;)  Sportsmanship 101 will be a prerequisite for WW players next year.  I suspect they can pass if they attend.
