What kind of cash do assistants at a WIAC school make?  I know Gaubatz is the women's golf coach, too.  So he probably gets free Titleists, which is nice.

You mentioned transfers to Gaubatz resume, did you forget to mention Andy Jahnke, or was it just plain luck that decided to transfer from YSU to get back in WI.

Especially considering a former Manitowoc Roncalli teamate (Neal Krajnik) played at UWSP when they won the NCAA's two years ago.

Well, with Jahnke, I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with his decision, but I know his sister attends UW-Oshkosh. Also, consider the reason why he transfered in the first place, playing time. If he were to transfer to Point there would have been no room for him in the lineup until this season. Oshkosh needed an outside threat for the post Sowinski/Sherer/Miller/Dworak era and with Jahnke they got it.

thanks for the karma point whoever gave it to me!  Must be the fact that I didn't rip Coach Kloebl to shreds.

UW-Stevens Point to Host Basketball Game to Benefit Hurricane Victims on Sept. 30.

I thought this might be of some interest to Pointer fans that might be in Point on Friday, Sept. 30.

That's the first college basketball program I've heard do something like that.  Am I wrong?  Has someone else done that yet?

Kudos to UWSP!

There was some discussion on the CCIW page about the possibility of something similar happening there... but I think it was just talk.

Makes me proud to be a Pointer  ;D

Makes me proud as a small college basketball fan, regardless of who's doing it first.  I hope others will follow their lead.

I love what the pointers are doing with the charity game and am glad to see Coach Sem at the helm.  I have known Semling since his GB days and he is a players-coach.  If he can use the UWSP success to continue recruiting (and Anderson will help a great deal with that), he will continue the winning tradition at Point

leroy

playdefense,
in response to your question about WIAC assistant credentials.... What about Koelbl?  Don't forget he recruited all the Point players.  That list of Oshkosh recruits, while nice, didn't bring them back to back national titles and all those conference rings.

Also, I can't post about WIAC assistant on this board without mentioning Jeff Berkoff at RF.  Got to be hard to recruit players to that school with facilities and location a factor.  But they are competitive along with winning a conference title two years ago.

playdefense

Hey Leroy,

No doubt about Koelbl!  He is an excellent coach, evaluator and recruiter.  He played a huge role in Point's success, but is NOT a current assistant in the WIAC.

As for Berkoff - I believe R.F. should be able to get better players on a more consistent basis.  What do you mean location?  The twin cities are 1/2 hour away, and are a goldmine full of WIAC prospects.............and don't forget about reciprocity.  Kids from Minn. get that at Wis. state schools.  I'm sure the lack of a great facility like Quandt Fieldhouse in Point or the Kolf at UW-Osh has something to do with missing out on some recruits.  BUT.........you have to have success, championships and noteriety to recruit.  And although Bowen is a great guy and works hard (as weel as Berkoff) they haven't been able to get the job done and in my mind, most of the time are a WIAC also ran!

Mr. Downtown

To be honest, even the Kolf Center needs a new face lift. Man..does that building look old already.

John Gleich

Every time I go to Kolf, I wonder how old it is... when was it built?

I agree Downtown that something needs to be done... but with a structure THAT big, what could you really do?  Would new bleachers (a la Quandt/Berg, Mitchell, uh... Whitewater... can't think of the gym there) be enough?

I don't think Quandt is very nice at all.  It's small and there are a lot of bad seats.  And they are made of plastic so they are hot.

And the parking sucks.

Point has a good team but the facility is just ok, in my opinion.

If by small you mean that there aren't very many empty seats, then you're right... it's usually full, night in and night out, unlike most gyms in the state.

QuoteAnd the parking sucks.

The parking doesn't suck if you get there more than 2 minutes before tip-off... and there's a parking lot right across the street.

Also, about the plastic seats... they removed something like 600 seats so that there was MORE room laterally and in front and behind so people aren't cramped with people in every direction.  They're not as high or as steep as any other gym in the state, tthe aisles are very wide, and as such, they're also much safer.
