Only saw them play maybe three times on video but very apparent they didn't have a guy who was an attacker playing downhill

Teams could collapse the lane quite a bit with Point this year, I don't remember another year you could say that.  Point normally has shooters everywhere on the court.  With Geodeke, Tauber and Retzlaff playing quite a few of the post minutes, teams didn't guard them out to the 3 point line.  That cuts off most driving lanes.  I think if you had to play defense honestly out to the 3 point line on everyone, except maybe 1 post in a 4 out 1 in scenario...Point would have much more success going downhill and getting to the hoop.

This isn't me signing off for the year... but it is a bit of a postmortem on UWSP.

I was looking at the preview for the Eau Claire game and saw some things that I liked and some that I didn't.

Point was #8 in the country in scoring defense (61.5 ppg). Also #5 in fewest turnovers (9.6 to/gm).

But UWSP was tied for 407th in scoring in the country. That's dead last. 62.2 ppg.

On a similar note, Point's women lost last night at Oshkosh 38-21.

Some things that jumped out at me (other than the half-time-like final score)... 0-11 from 3. Just 3/4 from the FT line. Just 9/49 (18%) from the field. And 15 turnovers.... to 0 assists.

Both teams had more rebounds than points.

SP's women are having a good year (20-7), and have been ranked in the top 25 for a good portion of the season (along with Oshkosh, River Falls, and Whitewater). And regardless of the outcome (point-wise), a loss in the semi's is the same if you lose by 40 or by 1 in 3OT's.

I hope for their sake that they get another shot at it to clear the bad taste out of their collective mouths!

Wow...I knew their offense was down this year, didn't think it was that far down though.  Almost exclusively, their offensive sets included a game of 2 on 2 with McGann and Pelkofer.  What happens when you double them and force other people to beat you though??  I felt all season they needed to play more team oriented offense than they were doing.

Seriously....

I mean, there are ways, though pace, to increase the length of possessions and drag them out... which takes away possessions from both you and the opponents. And clearly, from a defensive perspective, they were still good.

But at a certain point, you need to score to win games.

And, full disclosure, I didn't have much of an opportunity to watch too many games this year and I didn't listen to more than 2, I think. But if Point hoped to have the same success running the same offense that they've run with such different personnel, it just wasn't going to happen.

Two years ago, you had two first-team All-Americans... guys who could hit from Steph Curry-type range and who could fill up a bucket and a score sheet. You had a capable inside player who could also step outside... and you had a slew of role players who complemented that core of 3.

Last year, you had a team of players who peaked at the right time (though they took some lumps early). They bought into the system and had the skills to succeed and exceed everyone's expectations.

This year, you had a few veterans and a bunch of young guys. I think that young guys need help. It takes years to really nail down Point's motion offense... and part of that comes with playing with your teammates over several years. You get to know where the guys will be. You figure out what to do when somebody moves to a certain spot. None of this is natural and it takes time... and I think it's why younger players have tended to look a bit lost out there amongst the veterans.

This is purely my opinion... but I feel like young guys need a bit more structure. Maybe a Motion-lite. Even if it's something as regimented as the Flex.

The problem, of course, is that it's just a pattern... so defenses can figure it out quickly, but I think there are wrinkles you can put in that make it motion-like and yet still helps younger players be able to go where they're supposed to go.

Greek Tragedy

It was a tough year for sure. Quite frankly, it should probably happen more than it does. Last year, 6 guys played regularly. This year, basically everyone was new to it aside from McGann and Pelkofer. As you said, it takes years. Let's judge this year two years from now and see if it's worth it.

Yes, Falcons win 72-61. Christensen hit 7 threes (7/11) for 21 total,  Pearson had 11, Erickson 10. Huge discrepancy in three percentages in favor of RF, 48% to 13%. Falcons down by 15 early, went on a 25-6 run to take a half time lead,31-25. Built it to 58-40 at one point. 20 for Yurk, 13 for Fritz, 7 for Staege.

3 0f 22 from downtown killed the Eagles. Congrats to La Crosse on a good season, and to the Falcons on a good win tonight.

I second what my friend Brian Carroll said.  And chastise my friend Big K for missing every game of La Crosse's best season in half a century.

Greek Tragedy

It's been reported that since neither Stevens Point nor Whitewater won the league, it was kind of pointless to have an All-Conference team. You can stop checking the website for updates. Good luck to River Falls today...sorry Oshkosh.
